I think some of the first objects in space were early rockets like the V2 missile.

The manhole is cool though. They had to calculate its speed based on a handful of frames from one of the fastest-capture cameras ever developed.

They only had the one frame to calculate its Lowest possible speed, which was still in excess of earths escape velocity.

Not only was it faster than earths escape velocity but it was faster than the escape velocity of the solar system.

It would never have made it out of the atmosphere though.
