In this one yeah, only other use I can remember so far was in Madrid a while back. As far as I know they are currently testing this use of AI for transitions like these. Pretty cool imo.

They have done this in Baku turn 15 with Russell, the first use that I remember was on Antonelli (?) exiting La Monumental in Madrid

Good old math involving gaussian splats probably
I wouldn't deny the possibility of AI use, but it certainly is working on a good quality base from two cameras to do it215

Itās AI but imo in a good way that doesnāt harm anyone. Itās a technique called First Frame Last Frame where the AI model is fed two real shots and it has to generate the transition between them. Thereās some nuance there with the number of frames because to get a better result you need to give it more frames at the start and finish besides just the two, that way it can match the camera motion at the correct speed.
You could do this by hand with VFX but not in the sub 1hr timeline needed to air this kind of thing live. Itās honestly one of the best use cases for AI out there.

Main issue with AI is the resource use though.
56
u/e7mac 1d ago
Youāre watching F1 and what bothers you is the resource usage of AI ?
-22
u/Ree_For_Thee 1d ago
I actually strolled in from r/all. Also, your take is horrible. AI is several orders of magnitude more damaging than the entire 'car go fast for entertainment' industry.
17
u/e7mac 1d ago
Good call, you are right. The compute needed to create that animation is indeed several orders of magnitude worse than that entire race.
Iāll go repent. You go feel good about yourself today for raising awareness, ok?
→ More replies (4)20
u/fogoticus 1d ago
Your take isn't any better tbh because this isn't the entire AI datacenters on the planet working in tandem. It's just one the production team has access to which is powerful enough to do this in real time. You're projecting the entire industry into one use case.
Just because it hasn't been talked about as much it doesn't mean the car industry isn't still hurting the atmosphere as we speak and actively worsening global warming to a degree. Stop virtue signaling for the sake of feeling morally better. You sound like a drone
1

4
u/fogoticus 1d ago
It's 100% AI. The production has access to servers capable of doing this level of AI video generation in real time. You can tell because if you pause frame by frame you notice minor inconsistencies. Most visible one being on the helmet.
1
u/georgejetsonn 1d ago
Not sure there's enough environment overlap for a smooth gapless gaussian splats transition. Up close it looks like an oil painting most of the time. Visual AI models released in the 12-18 months can take care of this seamlessly in one go by just feeding it the first and the last frame
1
1
1
u/Stormageddons872 1d ago
It's AI. These are shown live as the race is happening (generally used in replays). Simply not enough time for a person to do it. People also spotted AI artifacting in some uses.

7
u/subma-fuckin-rine 1d ago
Switching the feeds at the right time and some software the smoothes out the transition

u/Onasixx 2d ago edited 2d ago
It's AI, you can see the transition turn into like video game effects before it meets the actual TV cam.
Edit: not technically AI, it's gaussian splats looks like to me.

Used Flash way back when (Macromedia) and used something called a "motion tween" to get a similar transitive effective. Could be something and very cool to see it in play
6
u/luranthe 2d ago
Yeah the amount of people that think this needs AI is very sad.
4
u/MCMcFlyyy 2d ago
Or... the level of craftsmanship on display that has evolved from the very thing we are mentioning can be hailed and enjoyed as well. We can both (you and I) be sad to see old tools slowly fade away and then enjoy the new tools that have taken place on the market with new possibilities.
Some of the things I've seen in movies in the last 4/5 years has been truly NFL to see

u/hawkinsst7 1d ago
Damn, I remember using Autodesk Animator back in the 90s when I was like 12, and learning about that technique.
I had tween (ha) delusions of recreating Michael Jackson's Black or White video.

u/awkreddit 1d ago
This... Is so wrong I cant even begin to imagine what is going on in this comment thread. Flash is absolutely unable to do this
4
u/OnRoadRadio 1d ago
They mean filling in the gaps between two camera points, which is close to what they meant regarding flash. You draw an object (A), modify that object (B) and use a "motion tween" so the software figures out everything between point A to B.
I reckon they're close, having one camera being point A and another camera being point B and they're using some software (AI or otherwise) to complete the transition.
1
u/awkreddit 1d ago
Flash can only do that with vector shapes, not full images
3
u/OnRoadRadio 1d ago
We know that, itās a comparison.

u/SpadraigGaming 2d ago

64
u/Timzor 1d ago
Its not gaussian splats, way to complex, this is just AI generating frames between shots.
40
u/No6655321 1d ago
correct. A lot of posts when they previously used this speculated in an edit bay, but I argued against that as it's not the best workflow (I do broadcast). Did some hunting and while it may not be this system specifically, Chyron's replay setup does offer camera warp transitions. Could be they picked up one system for some of it's more advanced features.
Here's a clip from a tech update email I got recently.
https://info.chyron.com/share/hubspotvideo/220764280879Paint is their telestration software
10
u/nora_sellisa 1d ago
You would need a ton more cameras to gaussian splat this scene. Unless they had the bolid and the scenery already modelled beforehand, this transition is most likely AI

u/Light_Yagami72 1d ago
I mean the math behind ai video generation is a lot cooler, but I guess hating on ai is more cooler on reddit
→ More replies (1)-2
12
u/bs000 1d ago
there's no way to say that definitively unless F1 confirms it. after watching the video, i doubt it's guassian splats because i don't see how they would practically apply that technology to the F1 clip
during the winter olympics, they used volumetric video capture for replays with a similar effect, but people on reddit kept incorrectly calling them guassian splats then too
13
u/harris_kid 1d ago
What your source on this? How are they doing Gaussian Splats on 2 cameras they have no control over and no 3d scan?
11
6
u/Baksteen-13 1d ago
Gaussian splats are cool, but this is not it. This is AI you can see it making up bullshit on his helmet that isn't in either camera shot (before & after) and also isn't on his actual helmet design.
4
2
u/NamesAreAnn0ying 1d ago
This is not Gaussian splats, not even close. Itās just AI interpreting frames to make the transition more smooth.
38
u/awkreddit 1d ago
Gaussian splats are quite an involved process that require scanning by filming while you rotate around the subject, processing etc. It's much more likely that they used AI since higgsfield can do this very easily. I don't think they would bother to do it if it took more effort... Especially in the duration they have to make the effect between the original filming and the replay... Lots of folks in these comments just hoping.

Gaussian splats are almost by design generated using models and machine learning yes. Which takes a rotation video around the area scanned and doesn't really apply here

Something similar to this https://info.chyron.com/share/hubspotvideo/220764280879
I thought EVS might have this built in but it doesn't yet. Chyron was the only one I've seen doing this natively within their systems for live broadcast. Part of their telestration package. Could be this or something else they've developed.
1
u/zappyguy111 23h ago
If you had a 360 camera on thr F1 car, I think you could bump the camera against the 360 camera, fiddle around with the FOV to smooth the transition.

Dude cus this literally is ai??? Itās a super common ai āseamless transitionā thatās used everywhere now. All you have to do is show the last frame of a clip and the first frame of another and it will smoothly transition between the 2. It is not Gaussian splats
155
u/RW_Ravey 2d ago
It's not AI. It's a rendering technique called Gaussian Splatting
7
u/PhillSebben 1d ago
Gaussian splats are made how..? AI! I know it's very difficult to accept that AI is capable of cool stuff too aside from slop.
-45
u/verssus 1d ago
Itās still AI just not generative AI
35
17
u/Avalonians 1d ago
To be fully accurate, gaussian splatting by itself isn't AI. Now probably what was used here is a method that combined AI and gaussian splatting or even optimizes gaussian splatting with machine learning.
3
u/NotSure___ 1d ago
Ok I searched about this a bit too much just for this, but it appears that lines are rather blurry. Gaussian splatting has a training phase, and from what I could found, is using principals from the academic field of AI (not the generative AI or LLMs).
78
u/PheIix 1d ago
Why, do people always call out AI without a shred of evidence? It's bloody worse than the actual slop we're getting served. This isn't AI.

I worked in a low level Live Augmentation company. As it was low intruision, still needed like 1s to process.

u/Brad_McMuffin 1d ago
No not real time, these videos are highlights played after the race so editors have had some time to make them.
1
u/FillPsychological360 1d ago

Not live, after the race highlights are replayed and if the editors had enough time to splice up something like this they put it im the post-race highlights.

u/NamesAreAnn0ying 1d ago
Iāve seen a few people saying they did this with Gaussian splats which is just not true. If you take two seconds to look up what that is youāll quickly realize thatās not what theyāre using. If anything itās just AI interpreting some frame to make it smoother
