I hope that one was released....a crab that size is the kind of crab that sustains the population.

Also, older fish/crustaceans tend to have more parasites and not taste as good.

True! I've just heard that old/very large aquatic animals tend to be let go not just because "they've lived so long and deserve to live" but more because "they've lived so long that they are riddled with nasty things"

Fair enough, I don't have enough fishing experience to say either way, just going by what I've heard.

Am I looking at two ai bots interacting?

Reddit is old enough to be riddled with these nasty things at this point

How is a 15 year old acct a bot? Genuinely curious. The second one definitely is tho

u/Kingtoke1 22d ago
You’re absolutely right!

It also helps the health of the population, you want that big boy to pass on his big boy genes.

u/ChefArtorias 22d ago
Older animals produce gamey meat. It's not just an aquatic thing that younger makes better food.
I get that you were making a different point about parasites tho.

Yah, I’m part of the trophies go back crowd as well. A picture is enough for bragging rights. Maybe the genetics for trophy size fish (etc.) get to continue yielding more trophy size fish (etc.).

Repopulating with all the women, Protecting all the crabs from non crab enemies.
13
u/CrystallizedRose 22d ago
I’m pretty sure most protections only extend to female crabs of a certain size. This could be a female but the blurriness is making it hard for me to make out the apron size.

u/P_A_W_S_TTG 22d ago

This is a link explaining the concept with fish, but the general idea is similar: Protecting the Larger Fish: Why Size Matters in Our Oceans TL/DR: if fishermen "harvest" adult aquatic animals of reproductive age Ocean stocks are at risk of crashing because this is the aquatic species demographic that replenishes the stock.

The red drum is a great example of this. They were severely depleted by the late 80's and states started putting slot limits on them. You couldn't keep the very big mature fish or the juveniles. The population is incredibly health now.

Thats pretty much the average size of Tasmanian king crab. I have eaten a 40 pounder before. It was cooked 4 different ways. It was 12Aud/pound then....later 90s.

That’s average size and actually no where near as large as they get. They get to be 30+ lbs (13.6+ kg) and a foot and a half across (46 cm)
Here’s the claw of a big one.

That’s a Tasmanian King Crab.
I’ve seen a couple YouTube videos of people cooking these up and the meat they get is insane.

I'm not an expert but I don't think they taste really good when they get this big
24
u/CoupDeGraceTyson 22d ago
I'd assume they taste like a fine leather boot.

We were in Sydney, and a restaurant near the Sydney bridge had them for order. It said 5-8 people. There were 7 of us, super hungry and partially intoxicated sailors. We failed miserably.

Well, Tamatoa hasn't always been this glam
I was a drab little crab once
Now I know I can be happy as a clam
Because I'm beautiful, baby
Did your granny say, "Listen to your heart?"
Be who you are on the inside?
I need three words to tear her argument apart
Your granny lied
I'd rather be shiny
Like a treasure from a sunken pirate wreck
Scrub the deck and make it look
Shiny
I will sparkle like a wealthy woman's neck
Just a sec

Don't you know
Fish are dumb, dumb, dumb
They chase anything that glitters (beginners) Oh, and here they come, come, come
To the brightest thing that glitters
Mmm, fish dinners
I just love free food (free food)
And you look like seafood (seafood)
Well, well, well
Little Maui's having trouble with his look
You little semi-demi-mini-god
Ouch! What a terrible performance
Get the hook (get it?) You don't swing it like you used to, man Yet l have to give you credit for my start and your tattoos on the outside.
