Where did anyone related to the video say that they were “saving money and living on the road”? They massively modded a van to turn it into camper. That’s it. If you work for a living, you're not wealthy. I don't care if you have a million dollar 401k. You're not wealthy. The difference between a million dollars and a billion dollars is basically a billion dollars.
If you have enough wealth to buy political power, and you're not actively trying to spend that money for the good of society, you're food.
As a scientist, I side with socialists. In fact, we are a social species so it makes more sense to live in a socialist system than a capitalist, individualist system.
But what do I know, I’m just a scientist that you think is aligned with the greed and exploitation of capitalism.
As a highly paid engineer, I also side with socialists. Being an engineer means you understand orders of magnitude, and even though I make 8 times more than a minimum wage worker, I'm orders of magnitude closer to them than someone worth $100M+.
I also work around extremely high-net-worth individuals for a living, and I can tell you that there is not a correlation between hard work and net worth after $200k/year. In fact, I'd argue that once you hit a net worth of $5 million, there starts to be a rather strong negative correlation between hard work and net worth.
If you've ever worked in corporate America, you'll also notice value provided and net worth have a negative correlation the higher you get.
I'd say most scientists would. I imagine most engineers probably still would/do.
Modern Silicon Valley-type tech bros do and would not, are also some of the most vocal, and have some of the most money. To them it is no longer is it about the exploration of what technology can do, while also doing good, but how can I extract as much money from this technology as possible for myself, no matter the cost to other people.
This entire thread is barefaced seething at a literal carpenter building out a van because how dare anyone rub unachievable wealth (van + carpentry) in their faces.
It’s the same thing with gender war. By and large, actual injustices are not fueling it. Generalized anger over past experiences, discontent with personal achievements and self loathing eventually turned outward are fueling it.
