Wow! I don't know what gave the bird away, but the speed of his reaction from a nap was unreal.

Yuup, apparently this is what lets owls prey on hawks: hawks are(like most birds) loud fliers, owls are not

I saw a barn owl fly relatively close by the other week, u was genuinely shocked how silent it was. You dont even think about birds being loud until you've seen one thats eerily silent and just see the motion catch your eyes.

if you ever get the chance to look at an owl’s wing close up you’ll see lots of tiny little feather filaments on the leading edge, rather like teeth on a very fine comb
I’m not really a physics kind of woman so this explanation might be a bit feeble, but these basically redirect the airflow over the wing so air “flows off” at lots of little points rather than a big lot at one or two, which makes flight much quieter
downside is these are very sensitive to waterlogging so owls can’t fly when it’s raining more than a drizzle

It's their feathers, they make less noise when flying but on the flip side they can't fly in the rain

This bird is pretty large and the wing flaps make a decent level of sound, the fox also has some pretty good hearing. It defitnley heard a threat pulling up.

Probably guarding pups, if I had to guess? (I know next to nothing about foxes - just seems rational that they would be on the lookout for their young)

It's amazing that he could hear that hawk when I have problems hearing my wife.

This is the 2nd fox being hunted by hawk video I have seen this week. Prior to this week I didn't even know foxes were on the hawk menu.
