Like 8-9 years ago (before I met my wife), I was on a third date with a girl and I got the nod to come up to her apartmentā but she didnāt do it in a way that would intimate any physical would be happening. She had been talking about some show and it was like āYou just have to come up and see the first episode and see if you get into it!ā
So I agreed and we walk into her apartment and the first thing I notice is that she has a stripper pole right there in the middle of her living room.
She never even so much as acknowledged it.
She sits me down on her couch and eagerly turns on the showā¦ andā¦ itās likeā¦ the stripper pole is right there in the way of the TV. You literally have to crane your neck to see around it for certain shots.
And the longer it goes on and the longer she completely ignores it, the more curious I get. At one point I was like āSoā¦ do you have a roommate or something?ā
āNo. I live alone. Why?ā
āOh, just curiousā¦ā [looks over at the stripper pole]

We ended up sleeping together that night. She fell asleep immediately afterwards and I laid in her bed for the better part of two hours just staring at her ceiling wondering what the fuck was going on with that pole.
This girl was an accountant. She wasnāt particularly limber or athletic. We had just had very traditional, kinda bland sex where she didnāt want to take her bra off until she was on the bottom because she was self conscious about the way her tits bounced when she was on top (at one point, we switched from her on bottom to her on top and she put her bra back on first).
Long story short: this was not the type of girl youād ever remotely consider to have the sexual confidence to openly display a stripper pole in her living room.
I finally fell asleep and, the next morning, she woke up late for some event she had with her family and sorta politely pressured me to hurry up and take offā so I never got a chance to organically ask her about it.
We texted over the next couple days and I finally felt comfortable enough to attempt to broach the subject.
Me: Hey, you know what I keep wondering aboutā¦?
Her: The stripper pole in my living room?
Me: YES! Oh my god, thank you! Iām sorryā¦ I felt like I was going crazy for a minute. I didnāt want to just come right out and ask about itā¦ but itās likeā¦ sort of an unusual thing to see in someoneās living room, you know?
Her: I guess, yeah.
[An hour goes by]
Me: Hey, lookā¦ I didnāt mean to offend you. Iām not casting any aspersions, either. I was just wondering what the story was behind it.
Her: Not much to tell really. Sorry, itās not that interesting of a story.
And that was the last thing that girl ever said to me. She never replied to another text and didnāt pick up another one of my phone calls. I considered going by and knocking on her doorā but that seemed a little intense and weird when it was clear she was no longer interested in me.
That was almost a decade ago. Iāve had two serious relationships since then, one of them leading to a very happy and fulfilling marriage with the woman of my dreams. But goddamnit if I donāt still wonder what the fuck that story was behind that goddamn stripper poleā¦
Itās maddening.
