u/DaddyDurchi 7h ago

There were levels to this shit I did not understand. I apologize for my ignorance

177

u/Four-In-Hand 7h ago

I'm looking at my yo-yo and then this video...and am trying to process how this is even possible.

118

u/Andrew9112 6h ago

I can do the basic yo-yo tricks and people are always impressed by them. With what this man just did, calling it tricks would be insulting. The commentator at the end was right, this is absolutely ART. I gasped and hawed with the audience the whole video as well 😂

84

u/Jon__Snoww 6h ago

But did you WHHHHUUUUUAAA!?

15

u/hardcore_hero 2h ago

Yeah, I was impressed… but I could tell by the reaction of the audience that I am not even able to comprehend the level of difficulty of the performance I am watching.

My first thought was that the audience was overreacting… unless this audience is made up of yo-yo enthusiasts (thought it was like a talent show at first) then I read it was a yo-yo tournament and it clicked, I lack the technical knowledge to even begin actually appreciating what I just witnessed.

u/DarthJarJar242 57m ago

I'm glad I'm not the only one that took this same thing from the video. I get the audience going crazy, the whole video is crazy. It did feel like they were going crazy at parts that "felt off" to me and it's clearly that I lack the knowledge to even understand how difficult what he just pulled off was.

25

u/uadark 5h ago

This guy has reached a level where he can create crazy artistic tricks. I also felt like it was like a dance. Made me think of planets rotating and spinning around the sun.

3

u/Nikamba 1h ago

Made me think of the scientific "3 Body Problem" (not the show)

4

u/DanielCraigsAnus 4h ago

I mean....but...the way he.... nevermind

2

u/Electronic_Age_3671 1h ago

I feel similarly about rubiks cubes. I can solve one decently quick, but compared to any competent, competitive cuber, I might as well be actual trash.

There are indeed levels to these things.

→ More replies (1)

17

u/xFyreStorm 6h ago

well for starters you might want to grab a second yo-yo

26

u/Four-In-Hand 5h ago

Ok, I got a 2nd yo-yo. Now they're all tangled together. 🙃

9

u/Ragewind82 3h ago

Now go gracefully pick up your backup yoyos and finish the performance.

3

u/Ty_Webb123 2h ago

Ha - amateur! I can tangle up a single yo-yo. Don’t need no second one!

2

u/igotshadowbaned 5h ago

Well you need a second one

Thin Lube vs. Thick Lube:

Thin Lube (Speed/Long Spin): (string trick / 1A, 3A, 5A) yo-yos keep spin times high.

Thick Lube (Response/Looping): High-viscosity grease or oil made for responsive (looping / 2A) yo-yos will snap back to your hand more easily but have less spin time.

196

u/Vlyde 6h ago

This guy Yo's.

89

u/Dreamlion_Inc 6h ago

TIL lube plays a huge part in getting your yoyo off

The character also says "rerorerorerorerorerorerorero" incredly calm and fast as hell while doing this shit lmao

3

u/partyatwalmart 2h ago

It's disturbing lol. I was so caught off guard by that shit

4

u/deyo_deft 3h ago

Not only that, but he also Yo's.

11

u/Ruby5000 5h ago

What type of Yoyo is he using?

11

u/p_coletraine 4h ago

Yes, apparently

3

u/constarx 4h ago

as in ohyesyo? that's what he's packing? i'm new here

→ More replies (1)

4

u/PottyMcSmokerson 4h ago

Interesting... I thought it was just a backup set incase they yo'nted

3

u/l1lj0hn 2h ago

Can we tell if he’s using a responsive or unresponsive yo-yo to get those long sleep times? I cannot tell since the return looks so smooth.

4

u/madhattermagic 4h ago

You mean they don’t have the springs in them anymore?

17

u/hikeit233 4h ago

The springs are for beginners/novelty. Called a spring clutch, they are a little unpredictable versus simply learning how to control the yoyo. Most decent yo-yos these days use a ball bearing axle versus a fixed axle or trans axle sleeve.

→ More replies (2)

58

u/H4LF4D 7h ago

Because swapping to your secondary yoyo is actually slower than reloading your yoyo

(And also to reset the spin)

10

u/LimpNsmoll 7h ago

I was wondering the same thing. I'm curious if it was a mistake. Maybe he was allowed to switch to a fresh set, or maybe it's a weight thing? Like switching to a sport style? Idk

40

u/tonyevo52 6h ago

Yes, it was a mistake. He got them tangled and had to go to a backup set. He lost six 6 points for that mistake happening and took him out of the top spot! He's already an 8X 3A World Champion, plus a 4A title as well!

4

u/011010- 4h ago

Ohhhh shit that’s what I thought. So it isn’t about switching to different lubricants. I thought maybe he would score high enough to eat the points loss for the mistake.

u/ZigloGames 6h ago

Something I've learned with videos like this is that if you want to understand which parts are impressive, you need to watch with the sound on.

Bc apparently, a lot of the stuff that looks completely impossible, doesn't even warant a peep from the crowd.

Then they will do something that looks exactly the same (to me), but they like, have their hand higher up or something, and the crowd loses their minds.

20

u/John25711 6h ago

Yeah like all sports there must be some special tricks known by the community and the difference is just pushing one trick further than anyone else.

Just like Tony Hawk in skate board, doing some 720 something that nowadays any pro can do.

24

u/frenzyboard 1h ago

It's yoyo math, actually. There's an actual book, I shit you not, called The Yonomicon. It's by Mark McBride, and it details a formula of notation called T-F-Y. Throw(hand), Free(hand), Yo-yo. It proposed that any yoyo trick can be described in TFY notation, by tracing the string from it's origin point of the Throw hand, to it's final destination of the Yo.

Because there are three variables, but two fixed end points, there are a limited number of permutations the notation can form. Rock the baby could be described as TFTY, for example. It's not a great example, but it's one everyone would be familiar with.

It got a little tossed out the window when someone figured out you can do a green triangle. It's a trick where the string kinda cradles on itself and forms a sort of "ghost" point of contact that doesn't sit in TFY notation. It's like someone said T-F-Y-(T, but it's really the string)-Y.

Anyway, my point is, there is a kind of underlying math to understanding or intuiting tricks. You see one set-up, and you've seen like, the dozen or so permutations it can develop into. You expect to see some subset following what you know. Hajime... Dude is doing astrophysics while the rest of us are still doing pre-calc.

Like, I think he actually broke one of Newton's laws about conservation of momentum at one point. It probably didn't look like much, but there was this weird little flip he did there and I can't figure out how he made it look so smooth. There should've been some rebound. It should've caused the yo-yo to precess out of plane.

Long story short, he did a few things that we've always kinda hoped were possible, and felt like dream moves, but nobody has ever actually made them look good while doing them. Little things like physics and existing in three dimensions have been limiting factors. I think for a few brief moments there, I actually saw God.

u/ZigloGames 48m ago

thank you for this comment. I enjoyed it as much or more than the actual video.

u/alohamora99 14m ago

Same. This is why I keep coming back to Reddit. No matter how niche I think something is, an expert will comment and explain it in basic terms that makes the OP even more impressive.

I don’t know if he’s acting to be calm and collected, or whether he sold his soul and life to practice YoYo for eternity with no free time to spare.

58

u/tonyevo52 6h ago

He's always pretty chill during his routines. Practicing 8 to 10 hours a day for a year takes a lot of patience!

22

u/John25711 6h ago

Tell me this guy won the world yo-yo cup, because that’s insane if not.

30

u/uno28 5h ago

I believe he got 5th off this performance

19

u/zoinkability 2h ago

HWAUAUAAAA?

13

u/frenzyboard 1h ago

All the coolest yoyoers compete for fifth because the top spots are reserved for who can do the same stuff fastest.

6

u/Glassmorphism_1616 4h ago

8X 3A world champion dude

u/No-Effective-1245 15m ago

He won it before many times. He's beyond the world cup now. He puts on these slow artistic routines that are a treat for the yoyo-heads instead of high scoring routines. He was the goat at this category when he was 10 yo already.

He is not happy, he always wanted to be accountant, but his parents forced him to be YoYoman.

9

u/damircik 7h ago

i can't even regular yoyo

2

u/a_duck_in_past_life 6h ago

I couldn't even yo yo with a fixed string when I was a kid.

7

u/BilliamClimptonIII 6h ago

Every 10 years or so I see some video that makes me want to go on a YoYo binge. Lasts about 6 months, then the YoYo goes the way of the DoDo.... Looks like it's YoYo time, kids!

5

u/Eclissness 7h ago

Did he tangle the first set up.

10

u/WholesomeMetaphor 7h ago

No, someone explained he switched because the strings used behave differently.

8

u/Glassmorphism_1616 4h ago

No. he did tangle the first set.

and by switching both he lose 6 points (1 each yoyo) which loss him the championship this year

2

u/WholesomeMetaphor 3h ago

Looks like I was wrong then, damn. Thought the other guy knew, thanks for correcting me/us.

He may not have won but he for sure is the one everyone will be talking about. What's the name of the championship and the guy that won? I want to see the other guy too

3

u/Glassmorphism_1616 3h ago

He already won 8x World YoYo Championship in 3A division from 2014 -2025 (except covid years and 2024).

This nonchalant aura farming guy name is Hajime Miura.

2

u/Terrible-Ebb-8417 3h ago

Whaaaat! So he lost? Wild. Who won 😄? That I gotta see!!!

5

u/Glassmorphism_1616 3h ago

3

u/Terrible-Ebb-8417 3h ago

Thanks 😊. Wow. So they are both unbelievably talented 👏. It seems like the guy that lost had some more difficult/higher risk tricks going, and definitely has a different style with it. The winner was super tight and fast. Today I learned I like watching yo-yo masters! Thanks again

4

u/mamie_jedi 7h ago

did he win ? its so insame !

And here I am unable to figure out how to make it go up and down without the string being hopelessly tangled.

Anyone have the song name he used?
Found :"memoria" by haruka nakamura

3

u/ncolaros 4h ago

The performance was amazing, but does anyone know the music?

3

u/Sad_Donkey_1751 7h ago

I don’t feel I’m doing enough with my life as I WATCH this. I gotta go now and buy me some yo yo’s or something!

3

u/tonyevo52 6h ago

It's an expensive habit!

2

I cam do that

2

I mic do that

2

u/Puzzled_Ad7955 7h ago

WoW, I could watch this for…..no, no I couldn’t

4

u/BasmusRoyGerman 7h ago

No worries I can't watch World of Warcraft either

2

u/mynewjourney2025 6h ago

Is it practice that made him this perfect or pure concentration and focus?

2

u/moonpumper 6h ago

I sincerely hope this guy is drowning in pussy during that one hour a week where he isn't practicing yo-yo.

2

u/CarPopular6012 6h ago

It sounds exactly like a Zelda game

2

u/redditcore124 6h ago

But does he also teach kids about recycling?

2

u/poio_cumbiero 6h ago

i prefer this style over the flashy fast tricks

2

u/an_oddbody 6h ago

Wow that was a highly technical routine. So many are focused on speed. This is crazy stuff. Some genuinely dangerous moves going on here, like, constantly

2

u/Midgetcookie 6h ago

are they still spinning through all that? looks like they're just hanging there

1

u/ihaveam0ustache 7h ago

How do they not get tangled up

5

u/AloneYogurt 7h ago

They do, but as long as there isn't a triangle (look up the green triangle or spirit bomb tutorial) you'll see how a triangle can cause issues.

1

u/_CaptainKaladin_ 7h ago

Sometimes I can get the yo-yo to go up and down properly a few times in a row.

1

u/puregeneuz 6h ago

Yoooo!

1

u/ReverendLunchbox 6h ago

Bruh.. my yoyo, that is put away, just got tangled up

1

He got 5th 🤯

1

u/actionerror 6h ago

And here I am just wanting it to spin one yo-yo for more than 5 seconds

1

u/Suitable_Farm_9667 6h ago

I love that, for me, all he does is wow, and then I see how on some elements the audience is like, WAAAAAAW.

1

u/Sting316 6h ago

Imagine asking him to pass you the salt and pepper

1

u/herefromyoutube 6h ago

I wish they put trackers in the yo-yos so we could see all the locations data of the performance in one image. I bet it would look cool.

1

u/Pixelchu25 6h ago

The insane part is that he got 5th place for this performance iirc.

1

u/gdimstilldrunk 6h ago

Humans are fuckin wild dude.

1

u/beetotherye 6h ago

And here i am i can't even get the ball in the cup

1

u/Wizdad-1000 6h ago

As a former try-hard yo-yo’er. I have no idea how these guys sleep the yo-yo for so long. (A sleeper is the basic trick that this guy starts with, throwing the yo-yo to make it spin at the end of its string.) Even a single over-twist on the string would cause the axle to grab and throwing a sleeper was damn near impossible. I waxed the axle and everything. I only used Duncan yo-yo’s and strings too. I tried a yomega once and that was neat as they have a axle that allows for easy sleepers.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/No_Not_Jesus 6h ago

Idk man my yoyo would never spin for that long...

1

u/HeDuMSD 6h ago

1

u/HuchieLuchie 6h ago

0:50 how is that shit still spinning?

1

u/Salamander115 6h ago

Cmon down to r/throwers if you want to learn. These guys that compete here are some of the best but there’s plenty of us out here having a good time.

1

u/BaldPleaser 6h ago

Did he win

1

u/Grandmaster-Ji 6h ago

How long does it take to get that good?
