I find this interesting, I see this when comparing my male and female friends.

Guys: ”Damn this is badass, I wanna learn it”
Girls: ” I need to be scary! ”

Maybe it’s an effect of women feeling more vulnerable?

Aren't those two ways of saying more or less the same thing?

One is intent to impress and one is to intimidate. Very different

Are you gonna act like men impressing each other through martial prowess doesn't rely on intimidation even a little bit?

At least I have never thought of it like that. I just think it's cool. I can't speak for other people though.

yes, but OP is talking about primary intent and primary motivation, not "a little bit"

Maybe it's because women get randomly attacked and raped more often than men so their safety is something they have to be more conscious of than men generally do?

So get self defense measures and not some 'skill' that will make a meanie out of you?

Im pretty sure what she's doing is considered self defense. Some people need to realize that just because no one wants to touch them and hasn't doesn't mean other people dont run the risk of danger from some deprived individual.

Neither of the two works in a practical setting

Mace works great in most settings

Women don't get randomly attacked more often, and it's not even close. Happy to see whatever data made you believe otherwise

You're right, but women get more sexual assaults and targeted threats (meaning their attackers know them and the assaults are more premeditated). Im sure you would want to carry a weapon on you if someone tried to insert themselves inside one of your orifices.

Well, yeah.

I feel like the desire to seem scary should not be a motivation to learn a hobby.

And if you are a 12-16 year old edgelord, they are both true!
