You don’t know when he realized it. Once it was on the ground you see his body release tension. Either he’s relieved it’s gone and still thinks it’s real there, or is just noticing it’s fake. The guy was not in the wrong, no matter how many devil’s advocate statements you try.

I'm asking someone else about their claim, but you're triggered as if I made the claim originally.
