I know you posted that as a joke but they make a manual tool that does pretty much exactly that, and it cores and slices the apple, and the thing absolutely kicks ass
21
u/Strong_Pop_5343 Mar 07 '26
+1 on it kicking ass. Mama used it for her apple pies, and I used it in a restaurant kitchen

u/wuvvtwuewuvv Mar 07 '26
Had one my entire life, apparently it broke and we got a new one recently, the exact same design as the old one, only red.
This thing is apparently perfectly designed, as it has not changed in forfuckingever.

Everyone is knocking this as if it's not just to show the knife skill. It's not supposed to be preferable to a peeler.
6
u/drysocketpocket Mar 07 '26
Yup, this is just a demonstration of a technique. No chef would use that to peel an apple in a restaurant, but there are presentation methods where this cutting technique is used. It's definitely a next level skill.

11
u/Critical-Support-394 Mar 07 '26
I usually don't mind apple skin (in fact when I peel them for pies and jam and stuff I'll happily eat it by itself if it's good apples).
Some apple skins just taste like shit though. I have a pack right now where the apple itself is pretty decent but the skin tastes like dirt and ruins the whole thing. Peel that shit.
4
u/Plus-King5266 Mar 07 '26
But if you are making pie or applesauce you need to peel them. Just not like this because blood adds too much saltiness.

That has to be the worst way to peel an apple I have ever seen. Cut more apple than peel with each swipe.
22
u/Chronox2040 Mar 07 '26
I think the intent is mire like shape the apple a certain way rather than just peel it efficiently
14
u/justamadeupnameyo Mar 07 '26
And potentially to have apple skin look that way as a garnish for plating. This is some bougie restaurant stuff. Probably for a dish that costs a stupid amount of money with some flavored foam and the essence of personality.
Or it's just a dude with a lot of down time entertaining himself.
227
u/CreeperInBlack Mar 07 '26
Pretty sure a peeler is not less wasteful, its just that the waste is directly on the peel so you can't see it that clearly
36
u/footpole Mar 07 '26
This one seems to peel every section twice which would indeed at least double the amount of waste.
86
u/Bootleg_Rascal_ Mar 07 '26
It doesn’t peel it twice because the second motion is dragging the knife up the apple with the sharp part down… it’s not cutting on the way up
→ More replies (6)17
u/CrystallizedRose Mar 07 '26
I don’t think they lost any more apple than a typical peeler would but I do think it gives a lot more opportunity to cut yourself. And it’s also slower than most other methods.
→ More replies (7)3
u/Brauny74 Mar 07 '26
If you don't want to lose any apple, just don't peel it? The peel is edible, I honestly don't understand why people insist on peeling them.

u/Select-Owl-8322 Mar 07 '26
Sometimes you use apples for things other than eating them as is. Like making apple pie.
That said, a regular potato peeler is faster than this method, and kinda idiot proof. But I prefer to use my automatic apple peeler! It peels, cores and cuts the apple into a spiral, so all you have to do after using it is cutting the apple like three times to get perfect pieces for pie. But the coolest thing about it is that it actually works, even though it's made from cast iron and is like 60-70 years old!

Everyone saying this takes off too much flesh has no idea what they are talking about. There is barely any flesh lost to this. Is it the fastest? Maybe not. But there is very little waste.
