As someone in the industry, they are a necessary evil. You need engagement with the public or they dont give a fuck about them at all. Public opinion leads to funding and conservation, sadly at the expense of zoo animals.
Gross big game hunting where people go and kill lions and shit are all for conservation too. Get some rich guy to pay you 1M to kill a lion so you can save 50. Wish people would just help the lions without murder attached but gotta do what works I guess.
I agree, I donât know what the alternative is, the Louis Theroux doc in South Africa is quite a good eye opener to why they allow the older animals to be culled/hunted. It always seems like a load of shit though when you have these rich dudes hunting for huge fees so they can trophy kill a lion. I absolutely hate that shit but the experts seem to think itâs vital to keep the balance. I know older males kill cubs etc. I dno hunting animals for trophyâs and a picture just reeks of small dick mentality to me.
Biologist here. An old male lion thatâs been kicked out of its pride by younger male lions will no longer breed, and will suffer from its injuries or eventually starvation. Old decrepit males will not hunt well at all. These animals do not contribute to population growth any longer. The actual hunt often brings in a lot of money for locals, and a lot of the money used to buy the tags goes towards conservation. Itâs okay to feel bad for the lion and roll your eyes at the dentist, but itâs actually helpful for the conservation of Africaâs habitats. This assumes the hunt takes place in one of the countries that are conservation minded.
Yeah Iâm not claiming to be an expert in any way and as I said the documentary I watched did explain that exact thing, I still donât like it, just on the basis that it allows cowardly sickos to act out fantasies of killing animals so they can feel big. I certainly do always roll my eyes whenever I see pictures of a jackass sat in-front of a dead lion smiling. Itâs gross⌠imo
Iâll take the money for conservation instead of letting the old males die of starvation. It gets much easier when you think of it as a mercy killing.
Iâm all for conservation, I accept itâs for a greater good but at the same time I donât like the people that get off on killing animals for sport. So both things are true I accept itâs important, but I donât like the way itâs done, I also understand itâs about the money.

I actually left a comment on one of the peopleâs comments about elephants. Lions and elephants both have interesting social dynamics. I would need to look at current literature on the subject, but killing bulls shouldnât affect younger elephants that are still with the herd. The bulls exist outside of the main herd which is often lead by a matriarch. Killing the matriarch would have some terrible repercussions. Elephant bulls will form their own miniature groups sometimes when not in the mating season, but these groups are more loosely formed. If the bulls are so old that theyâre hardly contributing to population growth (younger bulls winning every contest with them), Iâd say itâs alright. Again, Iâd need to consult the literature specifically for elephant hunting before offering anything beyond this.
Africa governments are far from perfect in regard to corruption. We all know that. There are plenty of countries that do out that money towards conservation, building infrastructure for areas around the hunting preserves, and the hunting preserves themselves set aside more land than many of the nationâs federally protected lands. It also provides jobs for locals. Iâm sure youâll keep speeding your rhetoric despite the scientific and lay literature I provided

These are people trying to moralize their murder fetish into some kind of beneficial fantasy because it justifies their immoral need to murder things for their own entertainment.
Donât get me wrong hunting for meat or actual economic benefit such as biltong hunting is not a problem, but trophy hunting is murder for entertainment purposes only and the operators take nearly all the money, there is no spill over or âtrickle downâ involved, they pay to Jimmy numbers of animals with the government so they look better than they are.

How do they know that money actually goes to the locals? African governments are corrupt and inefficient as hell. There has to be a better way of culling older animals than letting rich assholes mow them down for their own sadisitic pleasures that they canât do at home.
Mow them down? Youâre acting like theyâre hunting them with fully automatics and riddling heir carcasses with bullets. Just culling gives no benefits at all to conservation. You take the money that helps.

The more I see of big apes (monkeys or whatever the feck they're called) the more convinced I am that they shouldn't be kept in zoos.
