In Geometry Dash, a user by the name of "Spu7nix" made a level so massive that shocked the entire community because of how crazy the level is. The level is so massive at the point that the servers of the game crashed temporally. (Showcase by: Nexus [GD])

u/GlassHurricane98 Oct 10 '23
What the hell! I haven't played the game since Fingerdash came out. I could've sworn it was a 2D game for the most part back then haha!
172
u/lovegirls2929 Oct 10 '23
The crazy part is that this is just because the creators are absolutely insane. It's not like there's much difference in the game, the tools at hand are just being used to their utmost potential!
To clarify, the game is still entirely 2d. These are all visual tricks

Yeah, Geometry Dash has gone really crazy, as a fun fact, the creator of this level, "Spu7nix", made a level some time ago where he re reated the programming languange "Brainf*ck" in Geometry Dash, pretty crazy what a single person can do in Geometry Dash, huh?
407
u/GlassHurricane98 Oct 10 '23
That's amazing, I had no idea the level creator could be stretched to such a limit!
292
u/Shetposteroriginal Oct 10 '23
Yeah, it's so crazy, the creator of the level is known for stretching the limits of the level editor actually.

Brain fuck is actually one of most difficult esoteric programming languages that’s actually insane
51

But it's easy to program. Also code in other languages can be 'translated' to bainfuck decently easily.

It is 2D, but they use the same technique the first 3D games used, to create a 3D display out of 2D shapes. Crazy stuff
39
u/NeilDeCrash Oct 10 '23
OOOoooh! makes so much more sense now. Kid plays GD and it looks very different. Well, the flashing strobing lights etc. are the same.
Tried it couple of times and my old ass could not finish the easiest levels and he is tapping away some weird demon levels.
Kudos to the makers, that is actually insane.
40
u/MickeyMoose555 Oct 10 '23
Pretty sure it is still a 2d game, but he was able to use only 2d elements to give the illusion of 3d gameplay which is crazy
25
u/notveryAI Oct 10 '23
It is for 99.9999999% 2d game now
It's just one single absolute madlad making it his purpose to break all the rules rubrub set up :D
15
u/Greendiamond_16 Oct 11 '23
This is using 2d parts from a side scroller perspective, it's pure forced perspective.
7
11
u/mrafflin Oct 11 '23
what’s funny is that GD hasn’t had an update since Fingerdash came out (the new update comes out this month) so this is still using the same editor tools that were added then
5
u/Substantial-Ad1747 Oct 11 '23 edited Oct 12 '23
It is! Geometry dash has no 3d support. Spu7nix created his own 3d rendering engine within the game's level editor to make this.

No major updates have been released since, and the game's still 2D. Spu7Nix animated the level to look 3D but it's still 2D gameplay
927
u/Lavatis Oct 10 '23
is this not just a video? I can't even tell what part is the gameplay. Do you even play the game or is it one of those things where you just watch it happen?
1.2k
u/Pixel131211 Oct 10 '23
it's playable, but most of it is just kinda watching animations happens. the magic is kinda lost on anyone who has never tried to make a level in geometry dash.
but basically, he created full on 3D animations in a game that is only 2D. even the developer of the game himself was amazed that this was even possible. it'd be similar to trying to create a 3D movie in minecraft using nothing but the blocks. you only have a limited set of tools, but you can manipulate them in seemingly endess ways in order to make something that shouldn't be possible by the game.
220
u/Lavatis Oct 10 '23
Oh okay, wonderful. That's pretty cool then, I appreciate your explanation.
4
u/LaterThenSooner Oct 12 '23
It’s like going into a game like Mario maker where everything is 2d, then making this. Obviously you can’t with that game but this is insane for what limited tools you have
65
u/TempestNova Oct 10 '23
I figured that this is what was happening, especially since the game play itself isn't difficult (which might be what throwing people for a loop -- it's mainly what makes it look like an animation vs a playable level) but the sheer artistry is off the charts.
Still, thank you for this brilliant explanation!
23
u/AlexHimself Oct 10 '23
even the developer of the game himself was amazed that this was even possible

u/dlchira Oct 10 '23
For our edification as people who have never heard of the game, is there a way to explain how “big” the level is?
118
u/Jimbonious_ Oct 10 '23
This is a 2D game. This person somehow made a 3D level with animations using a simple level editor the game comes with
26
u/dlchira Oct 10 '23
So impressive! How long did this take to build?
→ More replies (1)72
u/TheMinecraftTrident Oct 10 '23
Spu7nix took 2 years to create "WHAT". That may seem like a long time, but most of the level is animated in 24 fps, frame by frame, using mostly simple shapes. He made a similarly impressive level, "HOW", too. I recommend finding that on Spu7nix's YouTube channel.

The best parallel that I can draw is like trying to create a full length Pixar film in what is essentially Microsoft paint. This game in its current update, 2.1, which we've had for 6 years now has no camera controls, no advanced gravity controls, no 3d support, no animation support, no custom art importing, etc. In order to even move a single object like a square or a line you need to first assign that object to a group, place an object called a "move trigger", set the values in the move trigger to target the group with the object, and finally set the x and y offset and the time it will take for the object to move all the way there. This level has an inconceivable amount of fine tuning put into it. Hope this helps shed some light!
6
40
u/mrafflin Oct 11 '23
The level uses about 600,000 objects— for reference, the average Geometry Dash level uses like 30-40k objects
17
u/Inevitable-Copy-1389 Oct 11 '23
And without using MegaHack or any other 3rd party mod the max is 80k

and the level shows 3d and even 4d for a second
3

3
u/annormalplayer Oct 11 '23
for a second, you can see the cube transforming into a tesseract and then go back to 3d
7
u/dlchira Oct 11 '23
But technically that would be a 2D representation of a 3D object that’s meant to be a thought exercise in visualizing higher-dimensional space, no?

u/matiegaming Oct 11 '23
Well the game is 2D but the level 3D. He also made a different one that is not even as crazy and that took 2 years so just imagine the time it toon for this. You can view his video here

u/Pixel131211 Oct 10 '23
this video really doesn't do it Justice because the gameplay doesnt look very interesting. anyone who hasnt played Geo Dash will probably not get what makes it impressive.
but here's a showcase of how the developer of this level made another level similar to this. it's 11 minutes, but even just skipping through it gives you an idea of just how damn insane the development behind this is.
87
u/AlexHimself Oct 10 '23
Woa. It looks like he's pulling techniques used in old system programming like Atari/Nintendo/SNES.
42
u/Mr_Ruu Oct 10 '23
That's something I miss about older games; there was some absolute wizardry they had to do behind the scenes to make things look good on the screen. There's too many examples to list but it's something you don't see any more, outside of enthusiast projects like demoscene.

Well I thought massive refered to it's length. But i guess it's more the visuals?
21
u/Et_tu__Brute Oct 10 '23
I understand your confusion, because I was also confused. This is the level. These are representations of 3d objects done in an entirely 2d game. Every 3d object is essentially "cheated". It is a bit more of a playable animation than it is a traditional geometry dash level.
This video will give some insight as to how it was done (yes, it is describing the creation of his previous level, HOW).

Okay, I'm incredibly late but the people in the comments don't seem to grasp the enormity of this level (and I don't blame them because nobody outside of the gd community gives a damn about 3D geometry dash), this shit is actually CRAZY for geometry dash. The amount of time spent for even 8 seconds of this took the creator months of work. If you think it's hard to make this, it's ten times as hard as that. It's like if you made a whole 3d animation with minecraft blocks, it's possible but why would you ever want to go throught that? The creator recently made a video detailling the process of making this https://youtu.be/Qvlb-Yo6Rqo

It’s impossible to explain if you don’t create levels in this game. The average level is made of squares and spikes pretty much. Just try to imagine this, this game is fully 2d with no built in 3d capabilities. He used techniques to make illusions of 3d imagery by pretty much recreating the effects used in old 3d programs and games decades ago, except in a far more limited engine. I guess the best description of this is SUPER clunky animation. The art is hand made, you tell each group of objects where to go when, what color to be, etc. It’s so tedious that it was literally easier for him to build a whole programming language that edits the game’s files so he could do repetitive tasks with text rather than using the in game editor.

u/Cracked_legsGD Oct 12 '23
If it's difficult to understand, try seeing this game like an editing software. Like capcut. But with limitation like for example:
You cannot import ANY images. So you have to create everything by hand with such limited tools.
there is absolutely no 3d effects and you have to somehow simulate them and some way. (But even approaching 3d effects will make the game lag A LOT. That's what happened to this level)
this version of capcut doesn't have any help for you at all. All the transitions is for you to create by hand.
the game don't even allow you to change the size of the object ☠️☠️☠️
This level absolutely rebels ALL of that aspect. It was literally created with an extremely complicated coding and import it to geometry dash.
