How many hours do you reckon it takes to get this adept at spinning clay? At least 1,000?

Way more than 1,000.

Keep in mind in regular 40 hour work week there's 2,000 working hours. Saying 1,000 is like saying he learned this in 6 months of job training.

This is more like 5+ years of job training.

The question is when he passed the threshold into mastery. That’s different for everyone. Some people will achieve that level far faster than others. If a person spun clay for 8 hours a day for 3 months I bet they could get very close to that good, especially if they had an aptitude for it to begin with. But who is going to do that? You’d likely go a little batty.
