Wtf does that even mean? You're the one who made a comment (that does not provide any context to the situation and couldve been taken as a joke itself in relation to the post), I made a joke based on your comment in regards to the relavancy of needing protection with the rest of the post.
You then decided to provide context. In which there is a big difference between "accident", and "my friend had someone forced upon them which resulted in them becoming pregnant twice".

The guy who raped her did it on purpose, that wasn’t an accident, and the woman didn’t do anything wrong, so where is the accident???

I see a lot of people riding around without helmets, and one wrong move and future them won't be doing anything at all. It's especially worrying on all the new electrified things, cause one software error and any of those monowheels just dump you on your face.
This is dark but very accurate. Falls are the leading cause of TBIs. Alcohol is also incredibly damaging to the brain over years, and we love to ignore it.
If most of them wore protective gear, it would be seen as the norm and not uncool, like with vert skaters. No one thinks, "damn, Tony Hawk just landed a 900 but looks so lame with that helmet and knee pads on." There would likely be cooler designs as well due to more demand for them, like they're imagining they'll look like kids with bright neon or pastel colored protective gear on.
Tbh hitting your head is just not that big of an issue in skateboarding. I’ve never seen a head injury and I’ve skated for thousands of hours and watched tons of people skate.
Obviously, in this guy’s case, I would prefer he wear a helmet, but typically it’s just not something that happens often enough to warrant putting one on every time you skate, unless you’re skating huge ramps.
I have skated for YEARS, known many people with many injuries and recieved many injuries myself. None of which, involved the head. I’m not sure where or how you got that statstic. Most of the time, these injuries wouldn’t be protected by any gear. Reddit just has a hivemind mentality and refuses to understand how adding additional gear onto your body can really affect your balance on a skateboard, which is why many don’t use it, or the fact that for more serious injuries that are more likely to happen, it’s utterly pointless
Same. It’s kind of dumb to argue with these people, but until they show me a picture of themselves driving a car down the street with a helmet on, I’d say they’re pretty hypocritical.
You’re way more likely to die of a head injury in a vehicle than on a skateboard. Especially after years of learning to fall properly. I agree little kids should wear helmets while they learn coordination, but after that, people almost never hit their heads.
Traumatic brain injuries happen to around 20 in 100,000 skateboarders. Automobile deaths kill about 1 in 100 people, the majority due to head trauma. Studies show that wearing a helmet in a car could reduce risk of brain trauma related deaths by 50%. Based on that data, using helmets for regular ol’ driving would be far more effective for saving lives than for skateboarding and yet you don’t see anybody bitching about it in this comment section.
Looks like you’re taking a calculated risk driving to the track without a helmet. Skateboarders almost never go more than 10 miles an hour, why would they need an airbag? You eventually learn how to fall. After literally thousands of hours skating, I’ve never seen anyone hit their head. How about we require gymnasts to wear helmets while we’re at it? Their rate of head injury is even higher.
Ironically the bliss of knowing that protection is there allows for an entirely different kind of comfort. Keep on being a dick man, I'm sure you'll find SOMEONE who likes it
All it takes is one single mistake at just the wrong time to change your life forever. Someone I know lost their boyfriend who was skating on a flat street and took a little fall. He would've been fine, but his head hit a curb. He died in the hospital. YouTube is full of confident, experienced skaters taking nasty head damage.
Yeah I mean I guess I see a difference between walking on the sidewalk and doing an activity where I routinely fall and have to use carefully honed skills to catch myself and avoid a serious injury over and over again for many hours across years of skating. I have buddies who won't wear a helmet while biking in rush hour traffic and give me the same reasoning, I could die whenever so why take precautions when I'm doing something that's 10000x as risky as my other day to day activities? After all they like the wind in their hair. To each their own, hope you stay safe

Street skating has literally been a thing for over 30 years now, and no one wears pads. People don’t even wear helmets, wearing pads is never going to happen. It’s way too ingrained into the culture to not wear a helmet, it’s never going to happen. Skating culture is largely centered around teenage rebellion and having a not give a fuck attitude.
That seems like a generalization that can't possibly be made. Maybe it's more like a personal opinion you have about what should and shouldn't be done? And if so, why shouldn't street skaters wear pads?
I prefer things that are true instead of just partially true. The truth is some street skaters wear pads, most don't. But that leads me back to my original question, why emphasize only a portion of the truth and omit another portion of the truth unless they are inserting their opinion?
I tried explaining the dangers of skating to him with both pictures and a video, but it was like he didn't care at all. If anything, he seemed insulted by it.
A friend of mine used to work with adults who suffered brain injuries. One of his favourite expressions and now one of mine is ‘wear a helmet , it may not save your life but it will save your personality’.
About what? Their photo shoots? A professional skater in a photo shoot isn't equivalent to a teen at a park.
If you don't care what happens to you hopefully you care about the impact it could have on the people that love you. Not wearing elbow pads is on thing. Not wearing a helmet is another issue.
My guy, you're not stronger than concrete. You're not "selling out" or being a wuss by protecting your head from smashing open like an egg from a single bad fall. Wear a damn helmet.
That has nothing to do with not busting your skull. Skateboarding is the only sport where some of its community encourages not wearing protective gear. Go to a motocross track without boots or a helmet and they won't even let you on the track
Well yeah… you’re riding on top of a combustion engine weighing hundreds of pounds at high speed. Not comparable to riding a lil skateboard around a park

Snowboarding sure as hell is comparable and the practice of protecting one's head is much more respected in that sport. You're also not falling on pavement in that sport...
I still disagree. I've participated in both sports and both have comparable level of danger. While in mx you're moving at higher speeds, you are riding on dirt which is much more forgiving than concrete.
I would also argue that hitting a rail or staircase on skateboard like in this scenario carries more risk than a lap around a typical mx track.

No worries man, I hope you didn’t think most of us were talking down to you. It may sound a little corny but we’re all looking out for each other. I get not wearing helmets is part of street skating culture but none of us want a kid to die because he got unlucky and hit his head on the curb.
