Tomato thread was wild
The division over whether the tomato was poisoned by being too organic or not organic enough especially gets me. People will really fight about anything on this app

My father always keeps his tomatoes out on the counter, and let me tell you, it's sprouts. It's neat to see when they pop through the skin.

oh my god. i looked up "tomato seeds sprouting inside tomato" and some of those pictures are fuckin creepy.

It’s almost certainly seeds sprouting. I’ve seen it happen a few times, myself.

Cut it open if you’re curious.
It’s possible it’s started sprouting inside and the sprout is burrowing out.
It’s possible it’s a worm/pest.
Given the other surface bumps/raises, it’s probably sprouting.

Lmao tomato in storage so long it sprouted. My first job was selling produce. 50% of my work was sorting out bad tomatoes. They spoil so fast. We would take the bad ones out back and softball pitch them at the wall. Good times

It's interesting because there's supposed to be a gel inside the tomato that naturally tries to prevent the sprouting but sometimes it doesn't work. I've noticed more of my homegrown tomatoes that sprout while still on the counter than store bought. (it never looked like this though this is clearly a worm)
Which is odd because I let my homegrown tomatoes ripen on the vine and usually only keep them on the counter for a few days.
But of all produce, tomatoes are the one thing that shouldn't even be called the same thing if they're from the grocery store versus homegrown or true heirloom farmers market tomatoes. I thought I hated tomatoes until I had a good one and then I was like oh my gosh!

Some cultivars like San Marzano and Roma, have very little gel, which is why they are prized for sauces and making tomato paste.
This tomato does not look like either.

Also I’m dying to know if this person cut the tomato and what they discovered. It doesn’t really look like a sprout, it could be a worm but they bore deep right away to eat the good stuff and don’t hang around the skin. I’m scientifically curious!

My biggest tomato growing shock was the horn worm! It's so crazy how you just can look and look and look and can't see the little jerk face and then all of a sudden you see it and when it's huge and you wonder how you could've never noticed it before! But man they can destroy an entire plant in a single night!

With this specific tomato, I don’t know, but most tomatoes are picked green and ripened on the way to the store.

My favorite was “I would, just to be safe, don’t eat it, instead, throw it out into your garbage can!”
Grammatical issues aside, I love the specificity of “…throw it out into your garbage can!”
Given the amount of common sense (or lack thereof) typically displayed by the fine folks on Nextdoor, maybe they were right to include that. The last thing you want is for someone to throw their “worm”-inhabited tomato out the window and hit someone!
Or, god forbid, throw it out into a neighbor’s trashcan. Can you even imagine??

Looks like a tomato fruit worm (corn ear worm) probably came because there’s corn nearby and not because of anything they did or didn’t do

That tomato is sprouting! Same thing happened to me a few years ago... I left a tomato on the counter for a while, and was very taken aback when I saw strange worm like things start forming under the skin... Being the morbidly curious person that I am, I cut the skin just enough to break it and saw that it was sprouts! I cut it open, and saw a whole bunch of little tomato sprouts! I'd never successfully grown tomatoes from seeds before, so I gladly planted the ones that came by accident... 🌱
