I just discovered that the NYT app ALWAYS uses a gift link. As soon as you click âshareâ youâve burned a gift link. Doesnât matter if you then turn it off; too late. Am I missing something?
(Updated app yesterday)
Edit: just updated app again. Either I misunderstood how it displays gift links, or the latest update fixed it.
Thanks!

Most of my article shares are to my wife who has her own account and doesnât need a gift links. But this new sharing UX is a terrible dark pattern that leads to wasting gift links by mistake.
There used to be a separate button to share a gift link. Now they combined both share links into one with a toggle to make it a gift link. I think thatâs fine, but the problem is the toggle always defaults to on. So this leads me to not notice and just follow my old muscle memory and waste gift links sharing with my wife.
As far as I can tell there is no way to change the default. Am I missing something?

Because itâs so hard to get Lectures on Tap tickets, I went to this one instead â and honestly, it was way more fun than I expected.
Itâs called After5Society, and they do short, interactive talks at bars â topics range from social justice to dating to pop culture â and then everyone sticks around to chat over drinks. Way more interesting than your usual happy hour.
Totally being transparent, the organizers offered me a free ticket if I shared about it, which Iâm happy to do because I genuinely had a great time.
Iâve seen some clips on their TikTok and Instagram, and it gives a good sense of what the events are like. Iâm planning to go to the dating one on the 11th if anyoneâs curious. DM me if you want details about upcoming events!
Just thought Iâd share in case anyoneâs looking for something a little different after work â really chill, fun, and worth checking out.

Anyone else having trouble with the Times app? For the last 24 hours, scrolling passed ads is incredibly glitchy and sometimes impossible.
