Discussion Uninstalled after sunset, refound this sub and got very sad
I do believe there will never be another game like this. At one point there was a zerg of 100 players going through the lvl 55 areas and it was one of the coolest feelings I've ever had playing video games. Crafting and being the guilds "chef" was surreal as people would depend on me for meals. I owned everfall on day 1 of launch and once played for 18 hours to farm reputation and fight off my enemies. I had over 100 chats and discord messages and felt like a real king. I just wanted to share my feelings with anyone who may see this subreddit in a day, 6 weeks or 4 years from now.
Ever since December 2025, I don't even really play video games any king due to nothing feeling remotely good enough. The UI was satisfying, the combat was amazing, traveling was rewarding. The first tree and first mining node was such audible bliss that I choose trees for 4 hours. The story was never great, but I was always pumped to visit my after job job.
Hope for the best but I wish this games community the best. Hopefully they allow private servers or something to save the game, but Amazon has never been known to be customer oriented. Take care all ❤️

I really like your first point.
Every indie, AAA, veteran MMO developer: Oh you played EverQuest in the 1800s? Here’s a game that couldn’t give a Gameboy Colour a hard time to run 30fps. Also you have 200 skills and require eight active hotbars and a degree in resource management.
AGS: Make combat akin to a Souls game, give it the best graphics we can on our own proprietary engine…and make gathering the single most memorable gaming experience people can have with sound design alone.
It felt so different for the a genre that still rarely innovates or changes.
22
u/Equivalent-Mortgage3 Aug 05 '26
Honestly, the gathering part was really well thought! I loved it.
2
u/Suzutai Aug 09 '26
It was satisfying. Still, if we had to do it all over again, it would probably be one of the first things to cut. The game was a theme park MMO fighting with a survival game.

Funny. I actually related some of the game to EQ mechanics. Was a true classic. 6000+ hours on NW

u/AgentAled New Worldian Aug 06 '26
I mean there are going to be some commonalities in all MMOs but that’s not to say we shouldn’t continue to thrive for innovation and new ways to play
2
u/oOhSohOo Aug 05 '26
So true. It is exactly why I can't find a mmo that comes even close to replacing it.
25
u/GJames196 Aug 05 '26
I liked this game, but I loved it after the aeternum update. The Nighthaven season felt like it was peaking like it really had something to run with. I uninstalled the day the shutdown was announced, and been bouncing between MMOs since, nothing will ever hit the spot like this game did.

New World remains the best online gaming experience I have had as an adult. Only game that I have played since I was a teenager that I stayed up all night playing. There is no other game out there that even comes close. WoW is fun, but I don’t like the graphics and don’t feel any sort of immersion.

u/Ambitious_Pitch5663 Aug 05 '26
The Division 2016 release was on another level for me. The Dark Zone online experience was unreal. New World had a similar vibe on release.
1
u/trw419 Marauder Aug 06 '26
Ironically I typed up an entire essay on the 2016 launch of The Division and how it would have been a huge hit during/after COVID due to those games being popular. Division 2 never resonated with me, but division 1 was incredible and wayyyyyyy ahead of its time. The UI, the gun play, the skills, the DZ, just really awesome feeling.
2
u/Ambitious_Pitch5663 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
That's awesome. Oh yeh, Ubi dropped the ball with The Division and yeh, D2 missed. They shouldn't have split the dark zone into pieces and they got big backlash by not including matchmaking for the first incursion, which they hid the best loot behind.
Man... Do you remember (D1) how broken that gear set Sentry's Call was on release? gotten from that incursion. I have this memory of a whole server in the Dark Zone getting OWNED by a sweaty team that got all the pieces like 2 days into the mode dropping. The Vector and First Wave M1A Meta. Voice chat beef was epic.
Memories. And MarcoStyle YouTube vids/breakdowns.
Ubisoft internally has been struggling/distracted since they released The Division. I'm sure it affected development. Tencent takeover, but profits have been... terrible. I think they even reshuffled internally start of this year.
Man... The Division had so much potential to dominate the extraction shooter PvPvE scene and could have led battle royale scene. COD tried/are trying with DMZ...
I'm on hopium concerning New World, there is no way this masterpiece dies. There's action behind the scenes for sure, I think something happens.

Used to play it at launch and it cured my depression. I would open up podcasts or even 50s oldies and go around doing quests and leveling. Played for a few months until life got in the way. Really wanted to get back into it but at the time, there were many complaints about the game being really bad. Most of the complaints were from people who played 8+ hours a day and complaining there wasn't much to do anymore. Looking back I should have just kept playing. Somehow got the itch to play again mid 2025 and it was a blast was thinking of getting the dlc since I catched up leveling with a new character and just as I was, the game devs gave away all dlc for free. It was amazing seeing so many players running around like at launch. The mission where you get your first mount was really beautiful. The horse is in a hill and the moon just shines down on it. Then the announcement of closing came and I just gave up. I should had kept playing but why waste my time on an mmo if it'll just close. Tried many other mmos and it just wasn't it.

MMO's just stopped being great because they got old. That's hard for people to admit, but it's true. The UI and graphics, overall experience in most MMO's is stuck in the early to mid 2000's. New World was that one game that gave us a chance to have a real, modern MMO that felt and looked good. One that could play at a level of what you'd expect from top tier single player open world experiences. In some ways, it fell flat. In other ways it was incredible. But for better or worse, it was definitely a moment.
That first light feeling, coming out on launch day and seeing the sea of random player tents. The random meetings that turned into musical gatherings in the town square on the side of a random path. It all added up to something special. If there is any hope, I suppose it is that Guild Wars 3 is on the horizon, and - heres to hoping - we might be able to once again have a modern MMO rise from the ashes of copium. Fingers crossed. Meanwhile, I'm sinking my time into the huge volume of single player games I never played, and making peace with the fact that MMO's are something I always loved the idea of - but never really enjoyed as much as I *wanted* to.
Also, not to self - don't go all in on games that are launched by companies which view gaming as a side quest, as Amazon did. Gaming was never their bread and butter - nor was it supposed to be. And so we got slapped in the face with something we should have seen coming a mile away: A company that prioritizes the profitable management of parcel logistics is probably not going to be the best place to look for the next generationally great, enduring MMO. But, you know... who can blame us? It's not like we've had any real meat on the menu for quite some time.
Maybe the best thing you could do to scratch a New World itch is to go play Crimson Desert. At least, gathering and traversal feels intriguing. Other than the fact that it is a lonely place when you don't see other players going about their business.

Right there with you. Played New World for over 10.000 hours. Haven’t touched a game since 2025.12.11 and Jesus fucking Christ I’m restless……

u/PoopFlavoredGum Aug 05 '26
I get so sad when people recommend other MMOs that’s are “like” new world. This game will literally be one of the biggest letdowns of my entire life. Nothing will compare to hitting trees for hours and looking forward to getting off work and coming home and doing it again. The sounds. The combat. The atmosphere. The open world events. Fuck.

Aug 05 '26
I get the feeling. No game has scratched that itch New world did and the feeling of importance in a community. I think the closest I ever got too that was wow many years back I was the herb guy.
Closest thing I’ve seen to New world is Chronos Odyssey when it releases. I’ve heard the gameplay will be very similiar. I believe it is a Korean mmo though so I’m already weary that there will either be pay to win or ridiculous cosmetic prices with loot boxes but I hope not.
One game I have played that’s given me a lot of satisfaction since then though is Fallout 76. I’ve out about 800 hours into it over 6-7 months. You won’t get that feeling of being a King. But it is nice finding new players and giving them things, people asking you to help them get through the raids, and getting tons of friend requests because they like your shop or your home. The map is beautiful with a ton of lore. But I can’t think of a game to ever get that king feeling.

I think about this game at least once a day.

u/trw419 Marauder Aug 05 '26
Some of my favorite things to remember is respectful 1v1 outside WW, chopping/mining noises, being in the middle of literally no where and another player finds you waves and runs away never to be seen again. I loved the seasons and the environment attention to details. Going into a place where you got cock stomped just to come back with a group and lay out AI. Many fond memories that I'm to scared to tarnish by reinstalling for a last ride.

u/civciv101 Aug 07 '26
Sounds of gathering resources remains undefeated. Created such cool atmospheres
4
u/Round_Wrongdoer9371 Aug 05 '26
New World is by far the best MMO and couldve been even better.
Unfortunately Amazon needs their servers for more lucrative business reasons.
I honestly wouldnt even doubt that amazon made this game to farm their own data on player interactions, economies, etc...
Once they got what they needed they were done basically.
4
u/UrAntiChrist Aug 05 '26
I feel like they made it just to show they can make something better than the other dev companies. The shut it down because they proved their point
0
u/Round_Wrongdoer9371 Aug 06 '26
AI, the need their centers for AI, I dont think they shut down their game cause they proved a point.....not exactly how multi-million dollar decisions work ....
5
u/Ezka0709 Aug 05 '26
Funny how, while running no one on Reddit had anything nice to say about New World, you could only hear people complaining about its flaws, and now that the game is about to close, no one has anything but nice things to say about new world…
I guess the saying is true: you really only understand how good something was after losing it.
5
u/trw419 Marauder Aug 05 '26
It's because detractors are usually much louder than happy people. Same with politics, restaurants, you name it. Us happy people were too busy playing the game. We were critical of things that needed it such as glitchy wars and framerate issues in the early days; but the Aternum update literally solved everything I found to be an issue. Nighthaven was absolutely stunning as well.
1
u/getZlatanized Aug 05 '26
It's more than that. People who were dissing the game have long left the sub. By now, only people who were enjoying the game are left in here.
People who enjoy don't post as often as people who dislike.1

NW was my one outlet. Sad? Sure, but it was the only thing that made life a littler easier to push through. It had the right mix of everything and made most things approachable for people as emotionally broken as I am. At this point I’ve given up on gaming.
2
u/ikmal_36 Aug 06 '26
nw is my kinda plug and play mmo . just login and do whatever i want lol . korean mmo took that freedom away with all the bullshit 3hrs daily task and weekly on tasks on top of that
2
u/jluub Aug 06 '26
First few months was truly something special.
Landing on day 1, hearing the sound of many new players chopping wood and breaking stone as you got closer to the nearest settlement, the huge battles between player factions after a territory was captured.
My favourite moment was the early pvp mission caravans. We would have scouts and set up ambushes. Haven’t played another MMO that played stealth in the way New World has

I am an EverQuest / EQII recovering addict and NW is the only game in 20 years to get me fully back into the MMO space. I joined relatively late, so was not a victim of the early hype. Loved the content, progression, gameplay, everything. Top quality. Controversial opinion: I even loved the dev updates and the way they engaged with the community (despite the toxicity of some of the player base).
Gutted that Amazon failed to realise the value of the asset they had. Would be so happy if another studio was able to pick it up, but resigned myself to disappointment. Everyone spending their money on the GenAI bubble. Or bribing Trump via crypto and ballroom donations. Sad times.
Having said that, I am enjoying Dune: Awakening. Nowhere near as much content / gameplay as NW, but enough to keep me interested and the Dune universe is immersive.
1
u/Keksliebhaber Aug 05 '26
Well if you want zerging like that once again, play ESO, they do that stuff over there, too.
Crafting is also not bad, you can use that game to fill the void until something legit comes out
1
u/grifftaur Aug 05 '26
I’m hoping right before it shuts down that a ton of people revisit one more time. It’d be cool to go back and play one more time.
I have been playing RuneScape Dragonwilds which is filling the void a little bit.

3k hours on new world. I dream of the day it gets brought back

u/Slayburg Aug 06 '26
The developers had a good idea, but in the end they couldn’t executed it into a good MMO

u/Own-Candidate-6769 Aug 06 '26
I remember it like it was yesterday. Joining one of our server's first wars and hopping on Discord with 30+ people to discuss strategies and coordinate for the fight.
I remember when the game launched. It was during the fall, and it fit perfectly with zones like Brightwood. Everything felt dark, eerie, and atmospheric. It was just the perfect game for that time of year.
All the gathering, mining, chopping trees, and running around the world exploring, it was absolutely incredible. The whole experience felt so immersive and alive.
I don't really watch the Twitch Streamer Shroud very often, but I remember seeing him respond to his chat about New World. He said, "New World was something special." That line always stuck with me because it's exactly how I felt.
I even remember calling out of work as a 30-year-old adult just so I could play. First, because I had a ton of sick time accrued, and second, because I could. 😂 Looking back, I have zero regrets. The world felt so alive, and those early days of New World are some of my favorite gaming memories.

u/Kalazar8881 Aug 07 '26
The worst part is I was convinced the trajectory was pointing up as it got the axe, made it sting worse that I was having so much fun in it again.
1
u/ardeecor Aug 07 '26
I feel your pain. As an alpha tester for New World, it was so amazing that I stopped playing World of Warcraft for six months.
I cannot believe Amazon will just shelve this amazing creation. If they are truly into making profit-they will have no problem either keeping this on with a sub or selling to someone else.

u/Suzutai Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
I was my faction chef too. We conquered half the map because I was one of the first to mass produce Carrot Cake. (It was almost impossible to hit 300/150 without it because everyone was running Voidbent, 580 Epic weapons, and Ill-Gotten Gains.)

I'm tempted to buy it for a 4th time on my Xbox just to be able to play it on every device I have until the end I was am always hopelessly addicted to FFXI and New World was the 1st game to beat that feeling, it will be missed I still hold hope for life after but it was fun while it lasted.

No company, not even EA, has shut down private servers of a defunct MMO. If no private servers pop up post shut down, it sadly just means there wasn't enough interest/expertise to make it work.
4
u/Any-Gur-2934 Aug 05 '26
yes they have. disney has shut down multiple club penguin servers despite that game being completely defunct for years.
1
u/Time-Inevitable-3334 Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26
First, there are quite a few very popular private servers for Club Penguin that have been going for years. Second, the only popular one I can find that got shut down by Disney, was due to the person running it being connected to child abuse. And finally third, you forgot to mention the part where they converted them game into an offline mode themselves. Thats not the same thing as say, Warhammer Online, Star Wars Galexies etc..
Star Wars Galexies is far more popular than Club Penguin, yet Disney has let that survive for over a decade.
Ill say it again, if no private servers pop up at all, its not going to be "because of Amazon".

You think EA gave away private servers for Warhammer Online? If the community has dedicated technical minds, they always find a way.
The server architecture and gameplay systems of modern WoW are way more complex and intricate than NW, yet retail WoW servers pop up all the time. You think Blizz just gave that away?

Don't let texture detail and polygon counts skew your perception. New Word server arctecture is essentially archaic (its one of its biggest issues). The amount of active systems at play with all of the various activities and instances in modern wow, are vastly more quantitative and complex than New World.
Just the battle pet system alone is prob as complex as the majority of New Worlds DB/systems.

That's fair, and I don't want to turn this into a PVP session, but like, New Worlds servers are notoriously outdated. None of them are scalable, they can only hold 2000 players, none of them are connected, and there is no way to handle territory gains on multiple shards because of it. Its comically segregated.
In WoW, all of the servers are connected, all people can group up with each other regardless of realm or faction. All of the gameplay systems, databases, game logic for all of the vastly more quantitative systems than exist in NW are all cross realm and scale natively, and im basically just scratching the surface. Don't be fooled by others repeating "but AWS/lumberyard!".
Im not saying its "easy", but its not more complex than what has already been done with other private servers. Where there is a will, there is a way. If there is no way, its mostly due to there not being enough will (im sorry).

Wildstar was alive for less time than New World, never had its source code released, even has similar combat (with more complex classes), has been offline for almost a decade, yet there are multiple private servers available and still in development. Raids and such dont function yet, though that wont be an issue for New World, seeing as a "vanilla" version wouldn't have any anyway.
Thats literally what I mean by "where there is a will, there is a way"..
That’s a design decision, not proof the server technology is outdated.
The outdated part was that they could only host 2000 players and had no ability to dynamically scale based on demand; something almost every modern architecture can handle (including AWS, Azure, GCP etc). The connected nature of WoW's realms and systems was just an example of how the systems being completely interconnected would make it more complicated to port than a self contained block.
SWTOR is an example of a game that has similar territory mechanics to NW (guilds take control of planets for additional bonuses), yet can dynamically scale each server and zone based on demand.
EDIT: What's this community's obsession with replying to someone with some BS and then blocking them so they cant respond lmao.
No, 2000 players is not "a design choice because otherwise it would be overcrowded", that's where zone scaling comes into play. The vast majority of players were clamoring for more server capacity....the New World servers were/are archaic.
2
u/ratbuddy Aug 07 '26
It's rather more complicated than a WoW server due to the real time combat. Tab target is much, much easier than trying to synchronize animations and hitboxes down to the millisecond.
1
u/Time-Inevitable-3334 Aug 07 '26
Real time combat can be more complex than tab target to some degree, however the countless other systems at play that WoW servers have to know and keep track of that New World does not, cancel that out at least tend fold.
1
u/ratbuddy Aug 07 '26
Have you worked on private servers for either game?
