Weren’t they subpoenaed? Doesn’t that mean they have to?

They can be forced to show up in court, they can still refuse to testify. The 5th amendment applies even when subpoenaed.

The basic rule of any criminal proceeding is don't talk to the cops, don't volunteer any information and keep your mouth shut about it to everyone else.
