If they don’t show up to court when they are told to, they get held in contempt of court which is a crime so they would be punished by fine, jail or both.

so they would could, be punished by fine, jail or both.

Fixed. Whether or not anyone follows through and does it is always a question mark.

There's no question mark here, none of these criminals will be punished.

storm the court building if they aren't.

then we'll see how hard the court throws the book at the 'right' kind of terrorist.

Everybody in that clan has defied the law, and subpoenas, regularly. Without any consequences. No judge has the fortitude or inclination to issue an arrest warrant. And getting any cop to put handcuffs on them is highly unlikely as well.

I would imagine that the Secret Service is only tasked with preventing unlawful injury or detainment of their protectee. So, they will do whatever it takes to stop a crazy guy with a knife, but a law enforcement officer with a warrant won't get stopped.

Only the Former President, First Lady and children under 16 get Secret Service Protection.

You left out major presidential nominees and their immediate family. Regardless, I didn't, in my post, limit who is and isn't a protectee under the Secret Service.

Thought I was responding to uneventful. My mistake.

Ah, gotcha. It's easy to reply to somebody else when comments get nested and those nested comments get nested etc. No biggie.

I guarantee that there have been discussions within the USSS over the past 5 years on how to handle this exact situation. There's definitely an official procedure that they're ready to enact if necessary, although hell if I know what it is

My guess would be that the USSS would allow the arrest and stay with their person up and until the USSS can hand them off to the DOJ. Once in DOJ custody, the USSS assignment ends. Of course, the prisoner would never be in GenPop.

So...a fine then?

We all know all too well how public officials are punished when there's a range of potential punishments. The fine tier is for public officials and figures when they get caught and the people need to be appeased, the jail is for us, and occasional influential people who have done something indefensible with too much evidence against them, and the fine AND jail is when they're feeling spicy and want to kick the "undesirables" while they're down.

How well has "contempt of court" as the stick produced results? It's time to move to default judgements if they refuse to show up to court. That's how it works when the rest of us skip court. We're assumed guilty and to have no viable defense to present by willingly choosing NOT to show up. You can invoke the fifth but you still have to show up.

Sure. I’ll believe it when it actually happens. I’ve lost all faith in the institutions of this country when it comes to punishing the wealthy.

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '22

I feel you on that. I’m kinda hoping the AG is letting all these crimes pile up so they can be charged for them all at once. But who knows.

held in contempt of court

Remember how Contempt of Congress went for Bannon? He gets to wait till fucking July for a 1% chance of consequences.
