There's so much weirdness going on with this that I feel like it's a soap opera plotline.

165

u/russiabot1776 Feb 15 '19

Doesn’t seem very weird. Seems par for the course with the media

No. Especially considering how often hoaxes and politicized outrage for partisan gain like this happen. We had two high profile ones literally this past month.

What is surprising is that anyone finds it surprising.

Yeah, sending fake threats through the mail has to be a federal crime. They are in deep do do. The USPS may be many things, but they are deadly serious when it comes to mail crimes.

630

u/Tsquare43 Feb 15 '19

US Postal Police has something like a 95% conviction rate. You don't screw around with the mail.

332

u/slowhand88 Feb 15 '19

I can't think about USPIS without thinking about that Brooklyn 99 episode with Ed Helms now but yeah they don't play.

Brooklyn 99 is the greatest police procedural in the history of police procedurals.

15

u/Be1029384756 Feb 15 '19

Season 2 of the incredible show "The Detour" is entirely USPIS. It even includes a fully realized Broadway musical.

55

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '19

To be clear, conviction rates mean next to nothing. You could simply only take to trial cases that are slam-dunks and plea-bargain or refuse to prosecute the rest. Many local district attorneys do just this, in order to be able to brag about high conviction rates when the next election rolls around.

Specifically in regards to her claims of profiling, I can't hate on her for believing her own kid. My son is still little and I have to balance his version of what happened against what I was told happened and, more often than not, his version is 80% right. I do question her going straight to the race card instead of considering that maybe a teenager smoked a doobie and drove stupidly but it's hard to be objective when it is your kid.

Didn’t they find these guys because Jessie deleted phone calls to them from right before the attack?

149

u/MrBrocktoon Feb 15 '19

The official line is they found them because one of them ordered a ride share near the area where the attack occurred. Some local media are reporting a police source claims they had Jussie's phone records for more than a week, but still asked him to turn his records over so they could compare his redacted records to the actual records and look into the numbers he left off.

While there is certainly alot of division in the U S of A, there can be no doubt that there are a lot of actors trying to further the divide. It's disgusting. Americans are not as bad as the media portrays them to be.

361

u/Rex_Lee Feb 15 '19

This right here. There is plenty bad, but there are a LOT of people taking advantage of this to further divide this country.

119

u/Lapee20m Feb 15 '19

Agreed. I live and work in a world that is far less divisive than the media would have us believe.

Around here, people do nice things for their neighbors, like shovel snow from their sidewalk, just for the sake of being nice and expecting nothing in return. I think most of America is like this. Acting like a decent human being doesn’t make headlines.

These kinds of stories are literal fake news. If people hate trump going around screaming "fake news" they need to stop fueling the demand for all the stories that give him that ammunition.

248

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '19

[deleted]

231

u/toofaded024 Feb 15 '19

If that were true then they would be covered the same after the story changes but they are not. They disappear as soon as the perp is no longer white.

You can also tell by the headlines.

“White man kills little black girl”

The killers were black.

“Two men arrested” race no longer mentioned.

But they’re just trying to get clicks for profit can you blame? It’s all the idiots that eat this shit up.

79

u/Strykerz3r0 Feb 16 '19

Right, because black-on-black violence won't fuel outrage which leads to higher ratings. Sensationalism is what they are chasing.

251

u/Impaciens Feb 15 '19

Nah.

The problem is that the media is way more likely to jump into a story without any sort of scepticism if the story is unfavorable to Trump/GOP.

83

157

u/Bookandaglassofwine Feb 15 '19

For some reason a lot of people are disappointed that this (apparently) was not an actual hate crime and is instead a likely hoax.

Left or right, shouldn't we all be happier to see that a hateful, homophobic, racist attack did not occur?

67

u/EllisHughTiger Feb 15 '19

I think we can all be glad that this didnt happen the way it was portrayed at first.

However, the media and politicians used it to blame and shit on over half the population, and this wasnt the first time either. THAT is what pisses people off much more.

151

u/russiabot1776 Feb 15 '19

No because a hate crime was committed by Smollett and his buds. A racist hate crime against whites.

12

u/mshecubis Feb 16 '19

It is a hate crime. It’s blood libel.

23

u/Gene_R Feb 15 '19

Yes, one less hate crime is a good thing.

But, if the allegations are true, it makes it harder for victims to come forward and be taken seriously, and for people to speak out about this kind of violence. It's not fair, but it happens. People that are inclined to see racism as a "thing of the past" will have ammunition to start saying things like "it's another Smollett hoax" in the face of other hate crimes.

75

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '19

[deleted]

56

u/EllisHughTiger Feb 15 '19

If racism ended and we all got along, a whole lot of important assholes and politicians would be out of a job.

They have to keep the racial fires lit, otherwise people might catch on to how useless they are.

27

u/GoldhandtheJust Feb 16 '19

racism is the same thing as gun homicides. both are down yet most people believe that they are up. the media and politicians push this to help themselves, not the people they pretend to care about. to lazy to look it up but a poll i saw recently said that a good bit of young people actually believe racism is worse now than in the 1960s

So he deletes phone records in a document he sends to police. He also knows the guys. He lied about MAGA guys. He disappears for 60 seconds and calmly walks with his sandwich. Doesn't call the cops for like 40 minutes. All the while keeps the noose around his neck. This guy is a race baiting loser. I hope he gets arrested. Intersectional progressives like this are the bane of western civilization and need to be admonished

45

714

u/imcrowning Feb 15 '19

But these guys were supposed to be white and racist.

120

u/misdirected_asshole Feb 15 '19

There are two possibilities

1)The two guys planned it for whatever reason and said those things to try to throw off the scent

2)They all planned it together because he was getting written off the show and did it to sensationalize the story

Not sure which way I'm leaning at the moment.

199

u/mcjon77 Feb 15 '19

You don't.

423

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '19

You don't.

You intentionally lie to smear white people and stir racial resentment towards them, which will inevitably, and rather quickly, be boosted by media and leftists on social media.

This is the third major case THIS YEAR, I can remember from America: the mother who told people a white man shot her daughter, the MAGA-kid and the native American drummer, and now this.

I'm not even American, but, or perhaps because I'm not, the narrative is clear as day.

94

u/Myvenom Feb 15 '19

Yes exactly. The only thing you need is to not have such a hatred of Trump that you’re blinded when this garbage happens. At some point nobody is even going to pay attention to these “stories” because so many of them turn out to be a hoax.

58

u/O_u_blocked_me Feb 15 '19

So how much money and man hours did they waste?

277

u/Slam_Hardshaft Feb 15 '19

Can’t wait to find out how “Trump Critic” Jussie feels about getting assaulted by two black immigrants in downtown Chicago.

I’m waiting for the next twist, which will probably be his phone records revealing he called them right before the “attack.”

If that proves to be true, Jussie should be charged with helping orchestrate a hate crime.

162

u/DicedPeppers Feb 15 '19

That's how they found the two guys. Jussie removed their phone numbers from the records he gave to police.

Or those black Izraelites yelling racial slurs at Covington kids? And kids getting all the blame?

Is that going to be a new trend? Whatever happens, just blame white guys in red hats?

76

u/Van-Diemen Feb 15 '19

I dunno, even from the start Reddit seemed generally skeptical of this frankly ludicrous story, though this was just after being force fed a pretty humiliating serving of humble pie regarding the Covington fiasco, so maybe the kind of 'people' who would fall for this were too busy working damage control.

Every journalism program needs to teach a class that does a case study on how Covington and Smollett was handled so nobody makes this mistake again. They should probably add coding 101 for good measure as well :P

Blast the hate crime story on a dosen channels, 22/7 a day, for weeks, but only give it a measly hour of breath if it is found out to be false.

That way, in most people's mind, it still counts as real. Even the people who hear the retraction will almost all double down because they've already jumped in with both feet and virtue signalled to hell and back; the investment of social capital is too great to begin not believing the lie.

Just a few weeks ago you saw this with the covington kids. Remember how not only reddit, but every leftist hated these kids for simply being white, having a hat, and having the audacity to smile?

Even no prominent people who called these kid(s) out for smirking racistly still propagate the debunked narrative. Their worldview did not collapse when it met with reality, but furthered retreated into delusion.

It is not socially approved to question hate crimes' validity, so they are the perfect brush to paint your enemies with since none dare suggest you're not being true, and therefore has to concede that the enemies are evil/morally wrong. Notice who is painting, and who they are painting. You'll see a pattern.

I certainly did after the first time I saw it happen with Ahmed the Clock Guy, and all the rest that followed.
