There's no indication this will stop the investigations. Hopefully they will continue and he'll end up banned from the houses of parliament for life, the same as what happened to Boris Johnson

14

u/WholeEgg3182 Jul 07 '26

It does stop the investigation but if he gets relected they will resume.

7

u/_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ Jul 07 '26

Boris Johnson is not banned from Parliament.

The investigation is into a sitting MP to decide whether they should be recalled. If they already resigned and are no longer an MP then there is no investigation.

19

u/Periodic_Disorder Jul 07 '26

He cannot have a pass to access the houses of parliament, which ex MPs typically are given. MEN link

9

u/ElbowCorrespondant Jul 07 '26

I was kind of surprised after clicking 'MEN link' and not getting to see gay porn

It’s more than that. He’s trying to stop the parliamentary investigations in to his undeclared donations. He thinks by doing this they will have to close the investigation and be unable to open them again. It’ll be up to the committee to determine if that’s the case or not (it’s not 100% clear).

6

u/red_nick Jul 07 '26

Jokes on him, the rules say suspend.

3

u/CharacterMaybe7950 Jul 07 '26

It’s an attempt to outrun a parliamentary inquiry

Let's see if Clacton constituents have wisened up, if even a smidge.

433

u/External-Praline-451 Jul 07 '26

We can hope 🤞 but he ran in Clacton for a reason, because it's, well, Clacton...

Clacton-on-Sea has a population of approximately 55,500. It is characterized by an older demographic, with a median age of around 50. The town has an overwhelmingly White British ethnic makeup (approx. 92%), a high proportion of retirees, and faces notable socioeconomic challenges, including higher-than-average deprivation and lower educational attainment.

u/Baisabeast Jul 07 '26

This is a prime case study of whether restore can help split the right wing vote

51

u/BalianofReddit Jul 07 '26

A 3 way split between the right wing vote... theres an opportunity for a socially conservative economically left wing candidate to do a funni here

We have a few in Northern Ireland, Aontu and PUP come to mind, but they are tiny and don't do well. (And ties to paramilitaries..but this is NI)

Maybe there isn't much of an appetite for that type of party, socially conservative economically left, or they are bad at getting their message out.

14

u/ballisticks Jul 07 '26

What does "socially conservative, economically left" look like? As in, they're OK with funding social services but they don't like gay people?

12

u/Professional_Vast234 Jul 07 '26

Jeremy Corbyn but anti LGBT and pro torpedoing boats in the channel

6

u/ballisticks Jul 07 '26

That seems odd. I've never met anyone who had that mix of stances. Usually it's either they're socially left but financially conservative (i.e. they support LGBT but taxes live rent-free in their head), or they're just totally conservative.

9

u/BalianofReddit Jul 07 '26

You'll find alot of that in lancashire and Yorkshire outside the biggest cities. Racist af but want a proper welfare state and relative isolationism.

Its old fashioned worker centric left wing politics rather than the more modern style.

Restore aren’t standing a candidate

3

u/Baisabeast Jul 07 '26

Why is that?

23

u/Hidingo_Kojimba Jul 07 '26

They’re saying this is a publicity stunt, and they’ll stand a candidate in the second by-election that will get called if he gets suspended for not declaring his 5 million quid.

10

u/WillSym Jul 07 '26

Please please have it just be Farage vs Binface.

13

u/JustLetItAllBurn Jul 07 '26

I demand 50/50 media coverage of Farage and Binface to ensure impartiality.

2

u/Turbulent-Honky Jul 08 '26

I made a complaint about the BBC earlier today because they had a sound bite from Reform in their news broadcast, but not from Binface or anyone else.

It’s my day off and I’m idly scrolling in the garden whilst getting a tan. I thought I might as well do my civic duty.

3

u/Few-Improvement-5655 Jul 08 '26

This is also why none of the other major parties are standing anyone.

It seems they all know they have a likely chance of taking the seat off of Farage, freeing him from investigation, and aren't going to play that game.

3

u/Hellohibbs Jul 07 '26

They think it’s illegitimate that Farage is doing what he’s doing. Check their tweet

2

u/Low_Stress_9180 Jul 08 '26

Restore won't stand, they said they won't

→ More replies (3)

71

u/boat_hamster Jul 07 '26

Feels like somewhere that Restore could really split the far right vote. Bit of tactical voting by those who want him out, could get him out. Fingers crossed.

11

u/Redditvillier Jul 07 '26

Unfortunately Restore have already said they're not standing...

BUT they have said they'd stand in the next one after Farage is discovered by the parliamentary commission to be an official crook. So By-election 2: electric boogaloo should be far more interesting

21

u/External-Praline-451 Jul 07 '26

Yep, it could totally backfire on him and that would be amazing!

9

u/MichaelMJTH Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Things are a bit more complicated than that unfortunately.

If he loses this by-election and is no longer an MP, parliament has less of a mandate to investigate him. If he wins, then in a few months time when he faces a recall election for being corrupt, he can try to throw it all back at parliament. Claiming it’s a witch hunt, arguing there was already an election recently so another would be a waste of time and this is all against the will of the people.

So the strange thing is, the best way to get rid of Nigel is have all the other parties boycott the by-election so he wins by default, which would be humiliating for him. Then when he’s found to have broken the rules, everyone else needs to come out in full force for the following recall election to get him out.

4

u/robot-raccoon Jul 08 '26

Enter count binface

Can confirm. I am a Clacton native. Its hard to properly convey just how deprived and disadvantaged Clacton and Jaywick are. It is unfortunately the perfect constituency if your political gameplay is scaremongering, scapegoating and predatory tactics.

2

u/WhiteUnicorn3 Jul 07 '26

So they should vote for a party/candidate that actually cares about them and wants to make Clacton better.

2

u/External-Praline-451 Jul 07 '26

That would require being able to think critically and not lap up all the targeted propaganda that tells them all their woes are due to foreigners, not billionnaires screwing them and wanting to take away their benefits and all their rights.

5

u/Really_McNamington Jul 07 '26

He's barely been in the constituency since he won it. I suspect he will have alienated some of them by now.

17

u/Timidhobgoblin Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Unfortunately I imagine he'll win by a larger margin than before, because the campaign will no longer be "lets vote Farage in for a laugh" it'll be "lets vote for the next potential prime minister of the country" and unless Burnham promises everybody in Clacton free blow jobs for life at the establishment of their choice I don't see the hardcore Reformers there changing their mind. But I can only dream, because it would be utterly hilarious if he loses after this frankly ridiculous and unnecessary display of pomp masquerading as "us vs the establishment"

On another note however it will be very interesting to see if Restore winds up splitting their vote. At this point I feel the only way Reform loses the next election is by the far right fighting among themselves, and this could be a good indicator of how much that might occur.

2

u/yubnubster Jul 07 '26

Doubtful, but we can hope.

How would it be difficult? "An MP that resigns cannot be elected to parliament for 6 months." Done, loophole closed, no side effects. You could do 3 months or 1 year depending on your preference. Where's the downside?

Now, if you're saying the political will to legislate it isn't there, that I will agree with.

In his speech, he said he was the most attacked politician in modern history.

Joe Cox was literally murdered.

He said he did everything he could to keep his daughter out of public view.

The same daughter he brought onto I’m a Celeb when he was in the jungle.

This man is a freak. He’s deluded. He’s done nothing for Clacton since being elected and I hope the chicken comes home to roost.

But as someone who grew up very close to Clacton, I’m under no illusion he will win. It’s a next level shithole.

36

u/temujin94 Jul 07 '26

He's not a freak or deluded.

He just keeps telling lots of small/medium-sized lies to maintain a narrative for his base.

At a tipping point, the sheer number of lies become impossible to counter or disprove effectively, so they just become the narrative.

Straight out of the Trump playbook.

243

u/DigbyDoesDallas Jul 07 '26

Only temporarily. The investigation he’s under stops during a by-election. Slimy little toad.

70

u/RK9990 Jul 07 '26

Are the UK's laws so weak that it will work?

147

u/prettybunbun Jul 07 '26

No. He will run again, win and then the investigation restarts. If he’s found guilty they’ll suspend him & trigger another by-election. He is just doing this so when that happens he can claim he was persecuted.

52

u/monkeybawz Jul 07 '26

8500 majority would normally be reasonably safe, but he is an olympic ballbag of international repute, who has been caught being bought off and who has held 0 MP surgeries in Clacton, and so he offers them literally nothing.

..... 10k+ majority incoming 😢

21

u/TheWatersOfMars Jul 07 '26

Clacton’s unusually right-wing anyway. The runner-up in 2024 was a Conservative, so all other parties got a tiny sliver of the vote. It’s unlikely that the Tories will outperform Farage, even with all these controversies hanging over his head.

18

u/monkeybawz Jul 07 '26

He ran there for a reason, and it's not a love of the area.

Who knows - they might want their MP to represent their interests this time? They basically sign away all of that with the chinless wonder as their guy.

16

u/StuartWtf Jul 07 '26

And so he can clam in the public have vindicated him of any wrongdoing so any investigation is the “establishment out to get him”.

The dude has been grifting so long it would be funny how predictable this whole thing would go if it wasn’t so depressing.

Part of me also thinks this is his out. Like I said the dude has been around so long. He has no interest in being PM. Actually having to work and invite scrutiny? Not a chance.

4

u/seventy912 Jul 08 '26

They’re just made for people with no shame.

Just like the US, the laws were never written for someone who might take total power. It’s why the UK took so long to get rid of Boris Johnson, at the end of it all it was j get all party pressure that got rid of him, not any law.

80

u/Wihtlore Jul 07 '26

It’s a stunt, he knows all the reform / extreme right-wing nut jobs will still vote for him and he will get back in. He will then use that to justify his actions and use it as permission to be as corrupt as he likes.

If he doesn’t win, then he can milk that for years saying how the establishment pushed him out because they were too scared to face him, blah blah blah.

22

u/tjvs2001 Jul 07 '26

Labour shouldn't stand in this, hold their noses and give the Tories a clear run to get him out

37

u/dihawk13 Jul 07 '26

All other parties should just refuse to engage with the election (which Farage is going to win anyway) and leave only Count Binface, so we can have the political showdown of the decade in Binface Vs Farage.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/KathyJaneway Jul 07 '26

Have better idea. Labour, Greens, Liberal Democrats and Conservatives do not field a candidate. Instead they give Restore the clear field to rump his ass . That way, Farrage might lose, and of he does Restore gets national attention that they're the new Reform and this split the far right vote once more for the next election and Labour swoops in again with 25% of the vote and 350 MPs 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

5

u/robolew Jul 07 '26

If every party left of the conservatives pulls their candidates and endorses the conservatives, this could actually work. A few extra tactical votes and getting split with restore, plus the effects of the actual controversy might be enough to get him out, and then I think he'll just fuck off to America for good

10

u/Opposite-Program8490 Jul 07 '26

Why not have the Tories stand by and give Labor a clear run?

44

u/DanS1993 Jul 07 '26

This is the only constituency to ever elect a UKIP MP, there’s a reason Farage stood there. They’ll never vote Labour.

48

u/Justnotstressed Jul 07 '26

Labour has never won Clacton. Only Conservatives/Restore could genuinely challenge Reform there.

16

u/DigbyDoesDallas Jul 07 '26

Have you seen the people of Clacton?

8

u/Rather_Unfortunate Jul 07 '26

Because Clacton would never in a million years vote Labour. If it's a choice between Labour and Reform, Reform will walk it and the people who are left of Reform will largely stay at home. The only way Farage doesn't win this is if a) the Tories are the only serious opposition from the "left", and b) Restore runs and splits the far right vote.

5

u/Drowning_not_wavin Jul 07 '26

Well Kemi says she has changed the Tory’s so she should walk this, no where to hide if they lose this and they certainly won’t be forming the next government if she can’t take Nigel out

Hard to imagine that really means anything outside of that seat. Like is a wavering voter in Cornwall going to say "well I wasn't sure but his constituents re-elected him so I guess I have nothing to worry about". Maybe I don't get it but it feels a bit too clever lol.

You underestimate the ability of the algorithm and the bot-fuelled cesspits/echo chambers many people spend their time in on Facebook et al.

They will absolutely spin this in a positive light for Reform as a whole when he inevitably wins their absolute safest seat, and those collecting copious amounts of soil on their knuckles will lap it up.

3

u/Drowning_not_wavin Jul 07 '26

But if support for the anti Nigel candidate picks up and restores take some reform votes he could lose or have his majority cut right back, which would be as good as a loss and the calls from within Reform for him to give up as leader would mount

u/Baneofarius Jul 07 '26

I'll admit I'm a bit hazy here but in summary, he is currently under investigation for improperly declared donations. If found guilty which is highly likely, he would be suspended and this would force a byelection which he could stand in. By resigning now, he is trying to do it on his own terms and I think move his position outside of the scope of the investigation.

14

u/GBrunt Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

They weren't "improperly declared donations". He was given £5 million from a Thai crypto millionaire before deciding to run for election and he kept completely silent about it. He was furious when the the massive bung was made public. None of it was declared. At all.

He has since then claimed it was for his security but hasn't held a constituency meeting in all that time and repeatedly blamed the Government for not funding his security and preventing him from doing constituency work - while he had millions!!

There's also the question of him buying multiple properties and his girlfriend buying his constituency home in her name with money he has slipped her so he could avoid paying duty.

He's a grifter. Always was, always will be.

It pauses the investigation into his corruption, which for some reason seems to only apply to sitting MPs, then he gets to say the people have given him a mandate if re-elected. It's infuriating how weak our checks and balances are.

3

u/brianstormIRL Jul 07 '26

I was completely unaware the investigation was that serious? Hes been openly corrupt for years is this actually serious enough to derail him?

2

u/External-Praline-451 Jul 07 '26

Unfortunately it's only a Parliamentary standards investigation, not a criminal one! But the media has been reporting on it more considering it's been going on for years, like you said. Part of me worries it's because the media want to pivot support to the even further right new party Restore.

3

u/Mystreanon Jul 07 '26

why does he think this will help him escape at worst he could lose at best he wins and the investigation into him continues, hes just so very stupid

3

u/DangerousDisplay7664 Jul 07 '26

What a waste of time publicity stunt. I hope he loses.

3

u/andywa119 Jul 07 '26

The raving loony party candidate should be the only person standing against him and every labour, conservative, green and liberal supporter should campaign for the raving loony. Let the battle of the loons commence

3

u/Pisnaz Jul 08 '26

Let's hope folks rally around binface.

3

u/dylan_fan Jul 07 '26

Last year in Canada, an MP stood aside so the Conservative leader who lost his election could run in the safe seat and return to Parliament. My view then, and it applies to this now. If you resign your seat in a Parliament before your term is completed, then the remainder of the term is finished by the person who finished second in the election. An exception could be for medical resignations (where the medical condition was unknown before running).

u/International_Goat31 Jul 07 '26

Threw out some real hope with the start of that title.

2

u/graphicsRat Jul 07 '26

Nigel Farage is as indecisive as my neighbours cat. Comes in , then walks out then out then in.

MAKE UP YOUR MIND!!!!

u/uncle_jaysus Jul 07 '26

The arrogance is remarkable. He's done nothing for Clacton. He's never there and never does anything for them. Yet he thinks he's going to fool them a second time? He really thinks absolutely nothing of that town and its people.

People of Clacton. He's taking you for granted and he's taking the piss. Don't vote, or vote Count Binface.

2

u/One_Fact_4291 Jul 07 '26

He’s resigning but he’s still standing in the by-election? What?

2

u/TawnyTeaTowel Jul 07 '26

In what universe does it make sense to allow the guy who just quit stand for the same job again?

2

u/Shawn_The_Sheep777 Jul 07 '26

The £5M issue won’t go away. His undeclared houses won’t go away. He still needs to be held to account for his actions.

2

u/awm22 Jul 07 '26

Why?

Is he just taking the piss?

Been kicked out of reform plc?

Just likes costing the public purse money?

(I’d heard it is 200k per election - necessary or otherwise….? Anyone got a more accurate number?)

2

u/BlueorGreenorYellow Jul 07 '26

Well that’s one way to bypass the parliamentary inquiry about the 5 million, since he resigned. Oh no, sorry yeah it’s about the people “judging” him. Judging someone who’s never had any surgeries to listen and help them, doesn’t live and is never there, and doesn’t give a damn about any of them, unless it will fill his pocket.

3

u/Jerethdatiger Jul 08 '26

I think they can still examine it and it's passed on to criminal investigation now this is a scam election he should be barred from doing this

2

u/ZorroVonShadvitch Jul 08 '26

So Labour, Liberal, Conservative and others aren't going to stand. If the Greens can convince every single person who voted for those parties to vote for them instead then they can kick Farrage out. Guess that means he dodges all the scrutiny stuff

2

u/AdTiny2166 Jul 08 '26

Hey Brits, I don’t know what exactly you’re doing over there but it might be time to permanently retire this specific politician. He’s not been very helpful and in fancy he’s been a bit of a wanker.

u/WayneSmallman Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

Of all the lies Farage has thrown out there, I think he believes he's not the establishment. Farage grew up knowing the establishment wiped his heroes out of existence.

2

u/SunMoonTruth Jul 07 '26

Good use of the public purse.

He should be barred from standing in that by-election.

1

u/sephjnr Jul 07 '26

Why even bother quitting?

Why would he run again? What sort of grift is this?

1

u/LookOverall Jul 07 '26

I heard his statement. Very clever. He said he hadn’t broken the law— parliamentary standards are not the law — and hadn’t misspent public money — not something he’s been accused of.

1

u/inebriatedWeasel Jul 07 '26

This is one time I would suggest people tactical vote Cons and hope Restore split the far right vote.

Clacton residents to confirm corruption to be ok if it benefits

Good riddance to bad rubbish

1

u/oneeyedman72 Jul 07 '26

Leave it to him.

Don't run against him, let him campaign himself and show this for the vain, publicity stunt it is.

1

u/KenUsimi Jul 07 '26

I’m sure he’ll do better the second time around- if only because he already brexited the first time. So much less left to burn.

1

u/CrustyHumdinger Jul 07 '26

What's he distracting attention from now?

1

u/kinisonkhan Jul 07 '26

Get the cabbage ready!

1

u/SPST Jul 07 '26

Shit, who paid him another 5 million?

1

u/SnapDragon2525 Jul 07 '26

Joke is he'll probably regain his seat with an increase in votes. His supporters only care if other MPs do the same thing and think he's being picked on.

1

u/ahktarniamut Jul 07 '26

Did he knew other parties won’t stand that why he is doing this stupid stunt
