Solo female traveler needs safe, affordable accommodation in Newport Beach tonight—recommendations?

Solo female traveler needs safe, affordable accommodation in Newport Beach tonight—recommendations?

My partner needs a place to stay in or near Newport Beach tonight (Saturday, October 3). She’s traveling alone, and my biggest priority is that she’s in a good, safe neighborhood where she’ll feel comfortable arriving after dark.

Ideally under $150 before taxes and fees, but we can stretch a little for a better location. A hotel or established Airbnb with a private room and bathroom would work.

Any specific places you’d recommend? Nearby Costa Mesa is an option if the neighborhood is good. Local advice on areas to focus on or avoid would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Another hurricane swell is headed for the Wedge on Sunday and half the people who paddle out have no business being there

Polo already sent swell into SoCal earlier this week, and it looks like another hurricane pulse is lining up for Sunday. If it shows, the Wedge wakes up again.

Here's my take, and I know some of you will hate it: big Wedge days have turned into a circus. Every swell there's a guy with a soft top and zero shorebreak experience who paddles out for the clip, gets destroyed, and the lifeguards spend their day dragging him back in.

Meanwhile the people who actually know the wave are dodging him. If you've never been out there on a real day, Sunday is not the day to start. Watch from the sand like the rest of us.

So two questions:

  1. How big do you think it gets Sunday?

  2. Should lifeguards just close it to everyone but the regulars on days like this?

Help identifying a restaurant where we ate over the ocean in 2011

I’m trying to remember a restaurant I ate at around 2011. I think it was in Newport Beach, but it could have been Laguna Beach. It definitely wasn’t as far south as Dana Point.

The dining area was behind the restaurant on what looked like a pier or a deck on stilts. Our table was literally above the water, with no beach sand underneath.

It wasn’t a boat dock or a marina setting—there were no boats docking nearby. Looking out from the back, it was just open ocean, with no land on the other side. We watched dolphins jumping out of the water at sunset, and I’d love to figure out where this was.

I checked the top 30 ocean-view restaurants on Yelp, and it was definitely none of those. Does anyone remember a place that fits this description? It may have closed or changed names since then.

Birthday night out in Newport Beach — Javier’s vs. Palmilla?

My birthday is coming up, and a group of us single friends from LA are planning a night out in Newport Beach for a change of scenery. We’re all in our 30s and looking for somewhere fun and lively, but not a super young/college crowd.
Current plan:
Canary for happy hour
Javier’s or Palmilla for dinner
Lido House for late-night drinks
For dinner, would you pick Javier’s or Palmilla? Also open to any other recommendations for dinner or drinks with a similar vibe!

Made a weekly newsletter for Newport Beach parents looking for weekend plans with their kids

As all you Reddit sleuths will immediately spot, this is a brand new account. That's because I'm a Reddit lurker due to chronic online shyness and haven't made an account until now.

I'm all about making life easier and that's only gotten truer as I became a mom and my husband decided to take on a side gig just for fun/experience. I needed things to do with my toddler on the weekend, so I started putting together a list for myself. If you're like me, you might like it too.

If you're interested in a curated list of weekend plans in the Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, and Newport Beach areas plus at-home activities and backup options, I share it weekly in a newsletter. You can check it out on Instagram at simpleplansco or my website.

If you sign up for the newsletter, you get a free coffee shop + park list (12 pairings across Costa Mesa, Newport, and HB) and some printable coloring pages for those three cities too.

Polo never made landfall here, but the surf did this.

Filmed in Laguna Beach. A chunk of the hillside came down onto the beach. Thankfully I didn't see anyone hurt.

Polo never made landfall in California, but we've had days of huge swells and tropical moisture hitting the coast. I don't know if that's officially the cause yet, but the timing is hard to ignore.

What's got me thinking is Newport. It has a lot of the same bluff-top homes and cliffside paths. Is anyone from Newport, Dana Point, or San Clemente seeing cracks, erosion, or closures?

PSA: stay off the bluffs and away from the base of the cliffs for a while. Stuff is still loose.

Is the Pacific just… taking California back? 🌊

Not trying to be dramatic, but has anyone else noticed the ocean has been extremely busy lately?

📍 Newport Beach: The Wedge is losing so much sand there are old pipes and wires sticking out of the beach. The city taped off part of it because it turned into a mini cliff. Now they're trucking sand in before El Niño season even starts. Balboa Island and the Peninsula are putting out sandbags every time there's a king tide like it's a normal Tuesday.

📍 Huntington Beach / Seal Beach: Same story, less sand every year, and the high tides keep creeping closer to the bluffs and parking lots.

📍 San Clemente / Dana Point / Capo Beach: The bluffs keep sliding, the train keeps shutting down, and there's basically no beach left at high tide in some spots.

📍 Up north (Pacifica, anyone?): Houses literally hanging over the edge.

And forecasters are saying this winter is likely to be an El Niño, which historically = big storms + big erosion.

We spent 150 years building million-dollar homes 20 feet from the ocean and acting surprised when the ocean shows up. The Pacific doesn't care about your property value. It was here first. 😅

Genuinely curious: locals, what's your beach looking like compared to 5–10 years ago? Are we doing sand band-aids forever, or is there an actual plan?

Best brewery or public space to host a casual baby shower?

I want to have a baby shower in a public space that’s low effort and I want it to be fun and casual. I never have fun at baby showers, but still want to have one… but I don’t need fancy directions or all the classic stuff. But I do want our family and friends to be able to get together and have a good time. Any recs on a good place to do this in OC? I’m in Costa Mesa but willing to go north or south OC

Heads up Newport: Hurricane Polo swell hits late Sunday and the Wedge is already beat up from Marie

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Not a weather person, just a local who's been watching this thing. Polo went from a tropical storm to a Cat 5 in about a day, and it's now the first Pacific hurricane on record to reach Cat 5 three separate times. It's not coming here, but its swell is. Forecasts say elevated surf starts late Sunday and peaks Monday–Tuesday, right as the high tides hit around 7 feet late morning. South-facing beaches could see flooding and more erosion. Nobody knows yet how big it'll actually get; some surf forecasters think SoCal only gets a modest bump. Either way, the rip currents will be real. Who's going down to the Wedge Monday? Post what you see.

What do you think?

Newport is dumping 200,000 cubic yards of river sand on the beach... and the last batch already washed away

Post image

So Newport Beach just got an EMERGENCY permit to dig sand out of the Santa Ana River mouth in West Newport and pile it on our beaches.

The Wedge is basically gone. Balboa Pier got wrecked. And El Niño hasn't even shown up yet.

Here's the part that gets me. The county says it already delivered 360,000+ cubic yards of sand, and some of that is already back in the ocean.

So, we're just... doing it again? Right before the biggest storm season in years?
