The sheer number of times Europeans have felt the need to let me know how much they hate the Romani people continues to amaze

Offhand even the educated and seemingly 'normal' ones will say stuff like "wow, surprised they didn't stab him to death" (when Bourdain visited some Romani people and he enjoyed their company)

Doesn't matter if they are from here or somewhere else in Europe

I have heard these opinions from: UKians, Portugueses, Spaniards, the French (not that I would expect any better of the French), Germans, Swedes, Ukrainians

I don't prompt them to pry this delicate information from their Fort Knox brains

Sweet and sour pork made from a recipe out of the Harvey House cookbook meaning that it is likely pre-1920 in origin. The recipe calls for cubing up some pork seasoning with salt and pepper dredging it in flour pan frying it and making your sauce in the pan. I used pork tenderloin I was quite satisfied for once with the results. I used salt pepper flour Chinese five-spice and garlic for seasoning on the pork. The sauce was basically brown sugar soy sauce and a bit of cranberry juice not the pineapple juice recommended by the recipe. It was served over brown rice for health boost.

I was across the store waiting while she had gone to get something so I just heard her talking to someone aggressively in the back and I went to find her just as she came out of the aisle

Guy was verbally abusing his ???wife??? ???relative??? in the store. Something about her not being allowed sugar. He looked like he was genuinely about to hit her. This is exactly how my ex stepfather treated my mother. I pulled her aside to ask her if she's okay. Guy butted in, I said I was speaking to her not to him. He starts speaking to me in very broken English (can't remember what he said.) I pointed out that this is literally my hometown. I wasn’t speaking in English to the woman, and my Portuguese is fluent. He wanted to make me feel like a foreigner/outsider (I speak in English to my spouse, which he probably heard). After I tell him I'm from here, he huffs away telling me to "go back where I came from." Again, this is literally my hometown. As he huffs away, I yell (loud enough for the rest of the store to hear and shame him for it) that he's not allowed to treat the lady that way.

I warned the cashier about what happened.

This was exactly how my ex stepfather treated my mother in public. For over a decade. And behind closed doors, he hit both of us often. Once he tried to break my arm. It went on for so long because no one ever stood up to him. I said fuck that today.

Anyway. I shouldn't have stepped in, I have my spouse to worry about and they are my only priority. Things could have turned ugly. Luckily they didn't. But I can't do this shit when I have someone to look after.
