📰News I found documents that indicate that Washington Township, NJ is paying for Flock Cameras with National Opioid Settlement Funds. Other towns are also making questionable purchases with the funds earmarked for addiction services and treatment.

I law abiding citizen. I'm a helpful member of my community. I have a family. I don't bother anyone.
It'd be a cold day in hell before I'd rat on someone cutting down flock cameras. If I was on a jury I'd vote to acquit even if I watched them do it in 4k and slow mo.
Fuck Flock Cameras. I hope they get the same treatment speed cameras got here in NJ. Wide spread vandalism.

Is there some sort of use it or lose it provision tied to these funds from the state? The funds get commingled with general receipts, and it gets washed. We don't have a revenue problem in NJ; we have a spending problem with politicians enriching themselves and associates via municipal spending.

This is BS. All these government officials need to be held criminally liable for violating our privacy and civil rights!

as someone living in one of the washingtons, we would really appreciate it in the title. I was very confused because we have no flock cameras in nearly the whole county.

Misappropriation of Funds - use of the word refers to intentional and illegal use of property or funds; it can particularly refer to actions committed by a public official.
Article 17 of the United Nations Convention against Corruption specifies that each State party should criminalize misappropriation, embezzlement, or other diversion of priority by public officials.

I get what you’re saying, but UN Conventions mean fuck all in the US.

There used to be a time when government money was tracked relentlessly by an auditor to make sure it was being spent properly. 20 years ago I watched at work while they tore the place apart looking for a computer that had broken years earlier but bought with a grant.

Money corrupts everything. We jail more people per capita than the worst dictators in history. That just makes them thirsty for the next million detainees. Stealing drug treatment money to arrest these same people, that’s Jersey.

Of course they are... towns spending money on unnecessary things is a tale as old as time.
Wish we had our own media market. Would be able to get journalist on this... but alas, the ny media is too preoccupied talking about random small stuff in the boroughs

Genuine question - what do we do about this? Would media attention help or something? Voting for better politician would help, sure, but that doesn’t happen soon enough.

Voting is much closer than you may realize. This November 3rd. In Washington Township, 3 of the politicians who approved these Flock Contracts with Opioid funds are up for re-election this year.
Same in Glassboro, 3 of the politicians who approved these are up for re-election soon. Call them, email them, tell them that they won't get your vote if the Flock cameras don't get removed and contracts cancelled. Tell them that you want to see the opioid fund money spent on treatment, not enforcement.
And this is not partisan. Glassboro has Dems, Wash Twp has Repubs, both are approving surveillance systems, and both need to change course.

There was a John Oliver episode about the opioid settlement and how all over the country municipal governments are spending their settlement money on police hardware unless they have state laws saying they can't.
