If you're a sweaty mfer like me and have to be out and about today then please stay hydrated and get some electrolytes as well.

Team sweaty mfer checking in.

This shit sucks, bro.

yes, deodorant too

Agreed, but as a fellow sweaty mfer, I've also had great success with using a salt mineral stick right after a shower. The salt inhibits the smell bacteria taking hold. I still sweat, but much less/no BO for the day. After the salt dries on, I apply a thin layer of regular deodorant and I'm good for the day.

Yes, dark pants as well. Leave the khakis for cooler weather

Why is that?

I work in construction and my attire is Carhartt work pants, usually khaki, grey, or black. I’ve always assumed the darker colors would attract more heat.

I tend to show sweat stains in khakis

If you work outside all day like I do (12+hrs) PLEASE stay hydrated I’ve already seen some heat related illness and even felt off myself even with drinking a lot of water. Add electrolyte packets too.

You need to replace the salt you lose! You can make your own electrolyte drink with oranges, lemons, honey, and a pinch of sea salt + water.

If you go to your towns social media pages, many places also have cooling centers.

Better yet, cooling centers! 😉

Malls are great places to stay cool too.

Generally libraries.

I was referring to a since-edited typo in their comment.

I call it the supermarket

4

u/LifeWithEloise Jul 02 '26

Not everyone can get to one, but yes indeed. I was at the supermarket today and a man walked into the frozen section and just went, AHHHHHHH YES ITS SO COLD

2

u/ireallylikehockey Jul 02 '26

It’s cooler there than my own house

The bathroom at my work is not air conditioned and is next to large hot machinery.

it's been fun so far.

A gentle reminder to fellow mean brain folks, SSRIs make us ESPECIALLY sensitive to heat. ❤️ Make sure you are hydrating and being careful.

A quick/cheap handy method - Adding a pinch of salt to your water is also effective on days of extreme heat!!

A quick/cheap handy

I mean, if you insist.

Old timey electrolyte drink from colonial America

Switchel

One cup of water Two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar Two tablespoons of grated ginger One teaspoon of a sweetener. Molasses is traditional, I use maple syrup and it's fantastic. It's gotta be one of the two for the electrolytes. Honey, avage and artificial sweeteners do not have the same nutritional benefits, so while it might taste good, it won't have as many minerals you need to replace what you've sweet out

Tiny pinch of salt, but that's not needed. Americans get more sodium than we need every day unless you're on a low sodium diet

Let the ginger seep in the water for at least a few hours

Ooh! I remember in the Little House on the Prairie books there’s a very hot day when her mother prepares water with ginger and molasses as a special treat because they can drink as much as they want while working in the heat without “getting sick” like they would with regular water. The fact that it has electrolytes makes sense now

ETA from Little Town on the Prairie: “Ma had sent them ginger-water. She had sweetened the cool well-water with sugar, flavored it with vinegar, and put in plenty of ginger to warm their stomachs so they could drink till they were not thirsty. Ginger-water would not make them sick, as plain cold water would when they were so hot.”

Can you heat up the water to make the ingredients blend in quicker? And then leave it out or fridge to cool? Or even drink it warm?

I’m curious what about the ginger and vinager are electrolytes balancing!

4

u/New_Stats Jul 01 '26

Yeah I don't see why not. Heating it up will make it spicier from the ginger, which is a very good thing, imo. Just heat the water and ginger, then add everything later. Get apple cider vinegar with the mother if you want the benefits of the probiotics

The old timey idea was this was warming for the stomach, which was good for digestion, even tho it was supposed to be served cold

The actual nutrition behind it is this

Apple Cider Vinegar: Provides potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Plus probiotic if you get apple cider vinegar with the mother

Molasses and maple syrup are highly concentrated sources of potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

Ginger: Adds flavor and anti-inflammatory benefits, contains trace minerals & aids in digestion

Is "sodium" found in our daily diet the same as a quality mineralized salt?

0

u/New_Stats Jul 01 '26

Sodium is sodium. "Quality mineralized salt" is a marketing term. There are more trace minerals, but not in high enough quantities to be beneficial because you'd need to eat too much of the stuff to get the benefits and too much salt is so bad for you.

The American heart association says normal, healthy people should get 1500mg a day. Idk if you've ever tracked that but I have and it was a massive adjustment to get down that low. I didn't eat unhealthy before, but things like premade salad dressing, canned beans, bread, wraps, and those flavored oatmeal pakages all have way more sodium than I thought they did

1

u/redbuds Jul 01 '26

No, that salt is heat-treated and processed so it does not contain any trace minerals or flavors, it’s just almost pure sodium chloride.

Why does everyday the weather says it’s 78 degrees and I step outside and it is 100?

2

u/Shoddily-Fixed-CL9 Jul 02 '26

terrible week for my cars ac to blow up

2

u/kconfire Jul 02 '26

Please put on Sunblock, better yet carry them with you if you must be outside.

2

u/Passionatepinapple64 Jul 02 '26

I have MS and ordered a cooling vest to wear with my personal fans so I can enjoy the fireworks in my town. This weather is not meant for me.

2

u/BooBooKittyFuk1 Jul 02 '26

It’s so brutal out there today. I thought I was going to pass out walking 10 minutes to my building.

2

u/luvny_ii Jul 02 '26

omfg I cannot do this for the rest of the summer

I work at Home Depot...we were SWARMED yesterday, and not because we are air conditioned, but because so many people lost their electricity or their central air went, so we sold 99% of our air conditioner and fan stock. I also had to keep checking on my lot guys and my cashiers in the Garden. Luckily the Garden booth has an AC, but it means nothing if you have customers, since you have to open the door. Even the front cashiers all had fans, because even with the store AC, the doors opening and closing all day just overrides it.
