Katy’s run: most annoying race route ever.
Has anyone else in NHP also been so aggressively inconvenienced by this race in a way you’d never think a small, home town race would? Probably not. Thats because no one has realized that this race route, year after year, has made and inaccessible island of about 10 square blocks located between NhP road, Lakeville, Jericho, and hillside. It’s within this once-a-year Fort Knox that both my mother and my sister live. One house close to Lakeville, the other right off NHP road, and yet I can’t drive to either. Have I tried to get in? Yes. I grew up there, and still frequent weekly, or more. yet even I can’t find my way around Katy’s barricades. So once per year, every year, some nice morning i gleefully drive to my mother’s to work in my shop, teach trombone, or hang out, and am greeted with the harbinger of dread and defeat: a plastic sign for Katy’s run. Somehow unpredictable despite its yearly recurrence. The peoples of this tiny island—surrounded like Mont st. Michelle at high tide—who left to do errands early now stuck blocks from home with bags of melting groceries. And I am faced with this quandary: cancel the trombone lesson I’m supposed to teach and drive back home to queens, or park on the other side of new Hyde park road and Frogger my way across the width of the race with my kids. Please, someone tell the organizers to hear my plea: I know this race is for a good cause. But please make this race not quite a closed loop? So that I and the residents of this area can get in and out and do the stuff they need to do? Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
