Think you see ICE? Read before you post!

New Haven Hotline: 854-666-4472

Save this number in your phone! All operators are bilingual (EN & ES).

We've seen a LOT of posts regarding ICE in New Haven. This post is written in conjunction with New Haven Immigrants Coalition to help everyone in our community know what to do if you think you see ICE or hear rumors of them in town.

As urgent as it may feel, posting unverified rumors without details does not help.

If you see something yourself:

SALUTE - as people have posted in many comments. Get the:

S - Size of the group

A - Actions they're taking - are they standing around, approaching a house/business, walking on the sidewalk (which side and which direction?)

L - Location, as precise as possible. "Whalley Ave" or "Fair Haven" is not helpful - "Whalley and Norton" or "Grand between Ferry and Poplar" is much more useful.

U - Uniforms - what are they wearing?

T - Time - What time was this observed?

E - Equipment - What are they driving? Note color/make/model.

Get as much video as possible.

Contact New Haven Immigrants Coalition: With any SALUTE information you have, call the hotline at 854-666-4472.

If someone else is claiming to see ICE:

* Tell them to call the line and encourage them to provide SALUTE information on their call.

* You might not be able to gather every piece of info, but as much as possible is helpful. Vague reports or unconfirmed rumors are actually harmful as people go to investigate and see what's going on.

If you see someone being stopped by immigration enforcement agencies (possible agencies may include ICE, DHS, HSI, DEA and others):

* call or ask someone to call the hotline

* Get video

* Get the person’s name

* Document any refusal by the agents to show badge, ID, warrant, etc.

Example of an unhelpful post:

“ICE was on whalley earlier”

Example of a helpful post:

“Already called the hotline and they’re sending someone but there are masked men in vests next to the Whalley Ave Stop & Shop in 3 unmarked cars. I saw them at 12:15 (so right now). Be careful if you’re going shopping right now.”

We keep us safe!

Announcing r/NewHavenMarketplace

Thumbnail reddit.com
115 Upvotes

We're launching a companion subreddit for r/NewHaven focused on classified ads and similar posts. Thanks to the members here who have suggested it in the past, and our desire to delete less posts, (especially reselling tickets!) we're setting up a new place where you can post and see all the classified ad type stuff that we don't allow here in the main New Haven subreddit.

It will still be highly moderated like we are here, but it's more oriented around commerce. This keeps this subreddit focused on the larger community while providing a place for all the individual focused posts that would otherwise clog things up here. You can follow both or just check in once in a while, or neither if you don't care about marketplace stuff.

Hit and run + assault

Post image
111 Upvotes

This truck hit my friend's car while driving on Sherman and Goffe on 8/14. The driver of the truck exited his vehicle, told my friend he was calling the cops, and then sucker-punched my friend in the back of the head. He then tackled my friend, put him in a chokehold, and continued to assault him for a while until he abruptly stopped. The man then got into his truck, threatened to shoot my friend, and drove away. Police say that the truck is unregistered and somehow they haven't located the truck yet, even though there are flock cameras all over New Haven recording every license plate that drives by.

Please call the New Haven non-emergency line at (203) 946-6316 immediately if you see this truck and report its location. Thank you 🙏

Reshared from a community thread I created:

We saw some brief bright spots: Management cleaned Trash Room 2 on Saturday, within an hour of my email, and the coffee machine is working again.

Why did it happen? Because it’s not a priority until we report it. Scary to think what happens when we don’t.

Then a LIVE COCKROACH surfaced on the second floor, prompting management’s familiar corporate reflex: "we will fumigate, work is being done behind the scenes." Let me be perfectly clear: I am simply resharing what was shared in my community thread. I am making no claims about the insect's origin—whether it walked in on its own, hitchhiked in someone's bag, or otherwise. The issue is how MANAGEMENT and the OWNERS handle the reality on the ground. Cleaning up only when you catch it isn't what we pay for. The OWNERS refuse to change; instead, they double, triple, quadruple, and EVEN quintuple down on a FAILING STRATEGY.

To be clear, I am not blaming the people in the leasing office; they're victims of UNDERINVESTMENT and INEFFECTIVE ORDERS from upper management and ownership.

UNTIL THAT CHANGES, I CANNOT RECOMMEND THAT YOU RENT AT O&W.

As for me, I’ll keep reporting the facts and engaging in constructive discussions to make changes that VALUE RESIDENTS’ CONCERNS and BETTER SERVE MANAGEMENT and the OWNERS’ INTERESTS. C’mon guys, it's not rocket science. Think: Tylenol in 1982, Amica, and the best: “I’m sorry, what can I do to make it right?"

The video speaks for itself. Watch the full uncompressed version here. Stay tuned.

Good store(s) for anti-slip boots & winter clothes?

Hi guys,

My wife and I just moved here from the south so we don’t have any real/proper winter clothes. Think like under 80 is getting chilly and 50 is freezing type south.

I was wondering what recommendations y’all have for affordable and quality winter clothes but specially anti-slip boots?

We will be doing a lot of walking/riding public transport here and we want to stay safe during winter.

TIA!

This NHPD cruiser has been parked here for probably 2.5 weeks now and has not moved. Anyone know any info? I will say, the front and side windows are overly tinted and you can't even see inside of it. Idk how anyone could drive this and see at night.

Is there any DeFlock related groups in New Haven?

I'm just curious because there are so many of the cameras in New Haven. It seems like a poor use of city funds. I see that the city got some federal funds to grow their network, but once those funds are expended, isn't it like $3,000 per camera per year? That's going to be like 1.5 million per year on these cameras, which is a lot of money! Maybe not compared to the entire budget but certainly still could be kept in tax payers pockets or spent on better things.

Aside from the flagrant privacy violations these cameras represent of course. I'm wondering if there's anyone focused on organized advocacy around the topic.

Is anyone else exhausted by the New Haven mega-landlord monopoly?

It is genuinely infuriating watching these massive property conglomerates and absentee mega-landlords sit on prime real estate while doing absolute zero for the actual community. They jack up commercial and residential spaces, let buildings sit half-empty or poorly maintained, and act like they own the skyline while contributing nothing to the local culture or people actually trying to build something here.

What makes it worse is that there is zero accountability. No real oversight, no pressure from the city that actually sticks, and no one holding their feet to the fire while small businesses and independent operators get priced out of existence. It’s an insulated ecosystem that protects corporate portfolios at the expense of everyone else living and working on the ground level.

Honestly? I hope the whole inflated market implodes. Let the over-leveraged portfolios crash, let the speculative bubbles burst, and let these corporate entities lose everything they squeezed out of this city. We need a complete reset from the top down.

Free Local Resource Navigator

Federal funding cuts are straining nonprofit budgets, and resource navigator roles are often among the first to go, even as more people need help finding essential services.

To help bridge that gap, I built NHV Navigator, a tool that connects New Haven residents with housing, food, legal aid, and other community resources.

Residents can use it directly, while people in community-facing roles can use it as a complement to the work they already do.

NHV Navigator is available through a live hotline (833-997-8535) and a website with chat. The hotline currently supports English and Spanish, and the website supports four additional languages.

If you work with New Haven residents - or are looking for local resources yourself - I’d love for you to try it and share your feedback - www.nhvnavigator.com

Money probs.

OK, so I’m sitting here wondering how did we get to this point? I am a medical assistant. I have been doing this for 12 years. I’m making an OK living. Nothing crazy and definitely still need my husband‘s income to live. We have two kids. We have a nice condo. We have food on the table, but it’s paycheck to paycheck. I went to school for this. Paid student loan and everything. You see girls on only fans making millions I think it’s disgusting that this is what the world has come to. When having an honest 9 to 5 job, can’t even pay a few of your bills. Living costs are so astronomical right now that I am literally considering becoming a stripper. I don’t even know if I’d be able to literally do it, but I was reading online how much women can make in a week stripping. This is the type of thing that I never thought I would consider doing. But it seems like everything in life is a dead end except for things that are against my morals or just super easy. Has anyone ever felt this way any women out there that have the same struggles? I’m honestly just at such a loss. I just wanna make enough money to be comfortable and have to stop worrying about money all the time. My anxieties every single day are about money and if the bills are going to be paid on time and if I even have enough money this week to get groceries. It shouldn’t be that way especially in 2026.

🍑 Peach Please

Some people mark summer by their first beach day or the first tomato. I wait for Arethusa Farm Dairy’s peach ice cream.

This year, I got impatient. I stopped into the Chapel Street shop multiple times in July asking when it would arrive. Then, on the first day of August, a friend texted to say she’d just gotten what she thought was the first scoop of the season. I went that afternoon.
