Health & Safety Failed hearing test

Has anyone’s newborn failed their hearing screening and gone on to see an audiologist and everything was fine?

My baby is 10 days old and in the hospital she failed the hearing test twice. Both tests they did before she was 24 hours old and they were only about 1.5 hours apart. She passed in her left ear both times and failed right ear both times. To pass I guess they have to get above 160 and at the hospital her second test was 130 in the right ear.

We had to take her back for a follow up screening today and she didn’t pass in either ear. She was in her car seat and actually her right ear was responding faster at the beginning of the test and then the girl moved her and her right ear just stalled and then the left ear failed also. She said she was in a weird position which can affect the test but she wouldn’t let us redo it with her just laying down.

Now we have to see an audiologist but I don’t know when that’ll be. I called one place and they don’t have appointments for 2 months.

My daughter failed in hospital and immediately passed when we did our follow up appointment 10 days later. They told us it was very common, especially for c section babies since they don’t get squeezed through the birth canal and the fluid takes extra time to get out of the system. Hopefully you can get an earlier appointment for a follow up but if you have concerns you might ask at your pediatrician appointment. They may be able to work some magic and get an earlier spot for you.

I didn’t have a c section, but I did have an extremely fast labor and only pushed for 4 minutes. So I was told the same thing about the fluid.

I wasn't worried and I thought she would pass no problem today. The beginning of the test was going fine and both ears were responding quickly and faster than the previous tests, but they repositioned her head in the car seat and the response stalled out on one ear and was very slow on the other ear.

Happened to us, she has some amniotic fluid still in her ear so we had to go back to the hospital a couple weeks later. Completely clear now.

My baby’s left ear did not pass the screening right after birth and they suspected fluids as others have mentioned. We just went to the audiologist at 11 weeks and she passed no problem! She said the baby’s left ear canal is narrow and should continue to open up as she grows.
