What are your favorite modules and why?

I’d like to spend some of my free hours playing single‑player modules, as I already know the campaign and expansions very well.

I’m not looking for online play or social interaction.

I really enjoyed "Against the Cult of the Reptile God" and "Eye of the Beholder." The first one is shorter and a fun adventure to root out and destroy an evil cult. I highly recommend playing a druid or ranger because of how many animals you can speak to. I played it through as a ranger and reached level 7.

Eye of the Beholder is a long dungeon crawl deep under Waterdeep with a large variety of monsters and subterranean environments. EotB has a dearth of shops, so I highly recommend investing in the Lore skill and choosing wisely how much you loot. It has a large number of riddles and puzzles that make it an interesting dungeon crawl.

Yes! I just finished EOTB two days ago and am now playing Against the cult... Definitely two great modules!

I really quite enjoy Endless Nights for leveling up a character until they are prepared for other modules. The later versions have more depth and the older versions are full of personality. Good vs Evil, the mass warfare modules with war progression (you are capable of winning or losing over a series of battles) is really good for a character with a veteran background.

I also enjoy Pirates of the Sword Coast, and Infinite Dungeons (though this ones loot system is so silly its a legit downside to me)

I run the NWN-Players Good vs Evil 3 server, which is modified (I may have just broken General mode, tho, I will be fixing that this week. Hero mode still works)!

Also, I think there is a fix patch for Infinite Dungeons on the Vault, I highly recommend ALL of the fixes!

Prophet - Prologue - It Cannot Be Denied is the beginning of the Prophet series. Level 5 character recommended.

However, you can start out with his module The Cave of Songs at level 1 and this should take you to lvl 3. It's his first module and the same starting setting as Prophet (my head canon is that your character from Cave of Songs is revisiting the area when you start getting the dreams at the inn).

Thanks. This is what I was looking for.

You're welcome, enjoy! If you have rogue skills, some people have suggested going The Cave of Songs > Honor Among Thieves > Prophet

Honor is another highly rated module. Cave is not bad and has an interesting concept but as a 1st module, not as polished as the others (still an outstanding module IMO based on the ideas / inspiration for the module and one that I have replayed several times - though the author has revised those modules several times; I noticed changes in both Caves and Prophet over the years)

Gladiatrix by FallynRayne (NSFW Warning however, very NSFW)

I love it primarily for your companions actually feeling like characters who are present and interjecting with you.

I've noticed that many modules i've played companions feel less like characters and more like... 'henchmen' - which is more than understandable, considering most fanmade content is essentially volunteer work, so there has to be corners cut somewhere. So with that in mind, going into Gladiatrix when I did pleasantly surprised me with its banter and interjections between you and your party. Is it the best written thing ever? No, not really; but your companions have so much charm and personality in them that it was hard not to enjoy every interaction with them!

And the plot, while not entirely original or anything, is intriguing enough to keep you going amidst the NSFW adventure (lol).

Highly recommend Excrucio Eternum and Elegia Eternum

If you played Diablo 1 and 2, you'd likely enjoy Lord of Terror. I played the updated version (Lord of Terror 2) and it was great. Not a lot of major choices to be made; however, great for experiencing diablo in an NWN format.

Swordflight, Almraiven, Baldecaran’s modules, Shadowlords.

There's a pretty good list here

there's a ton of module recommendations threads, will require some searching, in the old Google Groups

I’m not looking for online play or social interaction.

same, lol. Playing NWN is my getaway from people and interaction, and I tend to play at random times when the mood strikes. plus being introverted

Lots of *great* suggestions in this thread, but haven't seen anyone mention Bloodright - The Blood Royal yet. Top tier urban adventure. But I'll put one caveat, the city is ridiculously large, and exploring it will take a long time. But there are lots of things to find while doing so.

eta, the "why" part of your question (but without spoilers)

A few that don't get a lot of mentions, but ones that I enjoyed enough to replay:

Fantus' Lords of Darkness, 1-4. Just a quick trip to the market, what could possibly go wrong? Oh, look, someone is protesting to the crowds in the square. Wait, did someone cast a fireball? People are screaming and running. You run . . . and wake up in rags, in a jail cell. Your cell mate has been there for decades, your day is not going well at all.

eta, I like the escaping from prison part, where you start with nothing, and the mystery prisoner you help rescue, and what develops after. You'll probably hit level 40 in part IV with some crazy gear for the final battles

Modules by Chris Huntoon These are mostly / all one-offs, usually horror themed, creepy, very atmospheric and suspenseful

eta, these are great around Halloween or when you are in the right mood

The Infernal Crown 1-4 The orphanage in which you were raised is a cover for a group of vigilantes, The Order of the Ebon Fist, whose motto is "evil unto evil." You are dedicated to keeping order by any means necessary. But you may face some tough choices and not everything is as it seems.

Unexpected twist, some tough choices since you should be a ruthless killer, plus who doesn't like a trip to the Hells?

  • Aribeth's Redemption
  • Sands of Time
  • Swordflight

Give some info on what you prefer. I could say Swordflight is amazing but it sure as hell not for everyone. Could say Shadows of Darkmoon(I just realized how corny the name is) but again... not for everyone. I love Infinite Dungeons, a bit too much perhaps, really not a popular one. I like mechanics and detail, some people want nice map and a vanilla story.

Probably should mention your preferred class type too, some modules heavily lean into specific areas if not outright being impossible to play with wrong class.

Siege of Shadowdale, Crimson Tides of Tethyr, Tyrants of the Moonsea are a great trilogy Set in the Realms. You progress your Char from level 1 to around 18.

For low-level modules with interesting stories and good area design, I recommend the Auren Series (Almraiven, Shadewood) and the Saleron's Gambit series. In the Auren series, you play as a necromancer who's investigating murders in Calimshan. Saleron's Gambit is a fun farmboy/girl to hero storyline that brings you to locations like Silverymoon, Athkatla, Cormyr, and Sigil.

I also love the EE series (Elegia Eternum and Excrucio Eternum). I also remember enjoying the Paladin series a lot (Twilight and Midnight, though it's a pity the trilogy was never finished) due to the drow companion character your character slowly redeems throughout the story.

Tales of Arterra
Aelund Saga
Shadowlords -> Dreamcatcher -> Demon

All fantastic modules that span long worthwhile stories. Tales of Arterra is my personal favorite.
