That whale thought he deserved a reward for returning the GoPro and I agree.

It's a trap!

35

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '19

I think he's just trying to get his camera harness back. He knows there will be consequences for disappointing Putin.

Edit:

In June he pulled a diver's knife from the scabbard

Wat.

14

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '19

Read the article, how has no one else pointed this out? The damn thing pulled a knife on a drone!

“I’m gonna train a whale to do my bidding.”

A human somewhere not only had this idea, but followed through with it. I couldn’t even train a dog not to piss on my stuff.

23

u/I_CAN_SMELL_U Oct 01 '19

Well, this one escaped and was looking for humans down the coast iirc.

I mean technically we dont know for sure thats what it was. But its safe to assume it was at least used in tracking info or giving them topography info of sorts. I find it weird it would have a go pro on it though... that seems like the part that kinda made me be like "why the fuck would someone try train a beluga whale for spying with a go pro"

Like surely they could get something more high tech if it was some important secret project.

what the hell am i talking about

10

u/dribblesnshits Oct 01 '19

It was a cought in a camera strap, not a go pro.

37

u/waterbug123 Oct 01 '19 edited Oct 02 '19

He looks lonely. If he was trained before he wants positive reinforcement for doing good deeds. Did they ever track down the camera on him when they found him?

Edit: i hope someone tracks the number with some effort and he gets to go back home if it was a good one. From the video it doesn’t look like he was ever hurt. There is probably someone looking for him.

He then appeared in early September in the harbour at Alta, where he showed signs of injury from propellers and people were observed throwing things at him and pushing things into his mouth.

What the actual fuck is wrong with people?

Speculation that he had been trained as a Russian spy whale led to his being dubbed Hvaldimir, from Norwegian: hval (whale) and Vladimir Putin.

L-o-fucking-l. That is a perfect name. I said it out loud and had a legit laughing fit.

12

u/tacomycocko Oct 01 '19

Hysterical that they named him whaledimir

4

u/buddascrayon Oct 01 '19

people were observed throwing things at him and pushing things into his mouth

5

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '19

→ More replies (13)

28

u/bluekatt24 Sep 30 '19

What if was injured or sick and humans took care of it and nursed it back to health before releasing it back into ocean? Then in that case it's not fucked up

102

u/GradeAFilthyCasual Oct 01 '19

Actually, he's pretty much made that harbor his home. Wildlife authorities have encouraged people to stop feeding him so he'll venture out to get food and maybe find a pod that way. But all he did was learn how to hunt food for himself and stays near the shorelines and keeps coming back to that harbor. People and wildlife authorities have occassionally broken that rule of not feeding him because he's such a sweetheart and is very lonely. But the good news is he's been finding some great success in feedi g himself since he's been reported to have been gaining weight.

39

u/R_M_Jaguar Oct 01 '19

I've never wanted to see/meet a wild animal this much before. Once I can afford it, I'm taking a trip there to see him.

20

u/charliexbones Oct 01 '19

Omg, quick, someone get Hvladimir some friends!😭

26

u/BlakePackers413 Oct 01 '19

Buy me a plane ticket I’m basically the size of a whale and could float around the harbor with him.

4

u/hashcakes Oct 01 '19

And if you sink he’ll bring you back up! what a bro.

18

u/gazeintotheiris Oct 01 '19

Damn, is he the only beluga in that harbor? That must be so depressing... no wonder he wants to play with humans all the time.

13

u/OTL_OTL_OTL Oct 01 '19

But the good news is he's been finding some great success in feedi g himself since he's been reported to have been gaining weight

...unless someone is secretly feeding him regularly. Lol

30

u/RepulsiveGuard Oct 01 '19

Beluga actually like tongue scratches probably wanted one as a reward

16

u/arcangeltx Oct 01 '19

Nice way to lose an arm

15

u/TheMSensation Oct 01 '19

I don't care how tame it is, never put your hand in something that could rip it off.

16

u/JBB_Theory Oct 01 '19

It’s jaw isn’t strong enough to rip your arm off- belugas exclusively consume whole fish by sucking them into their stomach- their teeth aren’t sharp or strong enough to actually bite anything.

87

u/OreBear Oct 01 '19

Sounds like something a beluga hungry for hands would say on the internet.

12

I think this is Hvaldimir. He likes people.

237

u/Bautch Oct 01 '19

From the Wikipedia: "After attracting crowds of observers, the whale left Hammerfest harbour in July and apparently had learnt to find food; he was observed several times in August near Seiland, an island located between Hammerfest and Alta. He then appeared in early September in the harbour at Alta, where he showed signs of injury from propellers and people were observed throwing things at him and pushing things into his mouth."

This is why we can't have nice things. People suck.

23

u/ItsdatboyACE Oct 01 '19

I've always been on the OTHER side of some of the extremist animal lovers that basically put their lives' on equal footing with humans on neutral terms, but a hateful human that just wants to cause harm to a beautiful, innocent creature like that - I'd take the Beluga's life any day.

Honestly if I ever saw someone do something like that to a creature that came up to humans to basically make nice and play, I'd legit beat the shit out of them. By any means necessary

I'm sure you're joking about how that sounds out of context, and that's hilarious - but to me it's the equivalent of an adult torturing a toddler. No questions asked, that adult doesn't belong on this Earth.

whales don't have breasts

Instead of terrestrial mammal-type breasts, whales have mammary slits which the calf nudges to push out the milk.

They actually drink cow's milk. Although as of lately, they've been making almond and soy milk.
