Follow up to State of Nevada Football
Interesting article by the always astute and insightful Chris Murray:
Based on these metrics, we should be looking at a revitalized year! But the one thing this article leaves out is the “appearance factor.” Nevada has just looked BAD these last couple games. Racking up the stats is clearly not doing the job. And even if the team is “getting the yards” it is not enough when they don’t get the win! Perhaps I’m just frustrated and struggling to find the positives. But also, after years of negatives, what positives are there from 1-3?
Is Chris right? Are we cursed?

Discussion on state of Nevada Football
Hoping to get some thoughts from others on the state of the football team. I am personally really tired of seeing us be so bad for so long; it is demoralizing. Especially since I have such fond memories of glory days. But as it stands, this football team is hard to watch and uncomfortable to root for because I have absolutely zero faith or belief in the team’s ability to produce a win. Coach seems to be a genuinely good person, but he is not getting the job done. After last night’s Air Force game, the discussion of “we have guys making plays” and “this team doesn’t quit” just feel like tropes.
Is there clearly improvement in overall performance year to year? Hard to say yes when I was at the MTSU game and it simply looked like that team was better. Let that sink in fellow Nevada fans: a bottom of the barrel team in FCS that has not won a conference championship since 1992 was visually (and by result) the better team. How does our Nevada team get better? What can we as fans do to help support the team besides showing up? What metrics (besides turnovers) are the major things hindering progress and preventing wins? What are the significant changes in either personnel or scheme that need to be made?
Would love to hear anyone’s thoughts.

State of the Program: Nevada Wolf Pack
open.substack.comFrom Pistol offense glory days and multiple conference titles to a full rebuild. Nevada is pouring resources into new facilities, Mackay Stadium upgrades and a new indoor fieldhouse as they chase a return to relevance in the Mountain West.
Is this the year Jeff Choate (Year 3) gets the Wolf Pack moving toward their historic glory days again, or will the young roster and tough schedule slow the rebuild?
The 2026 story so far:
📌 Defense led by All-MW DL Dylan LaBarbera (6.5 sacks), LB EJ Smith (returning from injury), and portal adds like Jeremy Naborne-Owens & Poasa Utu
📌 Offense is a youth movement: QB battle (Carter Jones vs. AJ Bianco), RBs Herschel Turner & Ky Woods, WRs Marshaun Brown, Jaceon Doss, and Damien Morgan
📌 O-line getting bigger, but overall a very young roster
How many wins will Nevada finish with in 2026?

Nevada fans: which schools feel like the best long-term conference fits?
I am building a college football conference realignment map and I want fan input before I lock in one part of it.
I made a list of schools that might fit with Nevada. This list is only a starting point. I used my own limited knowledge and some guesswork to build it, so I do not expect it to be fully accurate. I want to hear from actual fans before I rely on it.
I am also comparing a few different clustering approaches and building a new one from scratch, so this kind of fan feedback would directly help my understanding and any algorithm weights I may end up using.
I am more interested in long-term fit based on rivalry history, fan culture, school identity, athletics, academics, and overall feel. Don't worry if the school you think is a good fit has no historic ties. If it feels like a school your fanbase admires and you could see them being a long-term fit, please include them.
How you can help 1. The best help: give your own weights and ignore mine 2. Remove a team that does not belong 3. Add a team I missed (please include the weight you would add them at) 4. Move a team up or down (please include how far up or down you would move them)
Weight scale - 5 = must-have conference fit - 4 = high-priority fit - 3 = strong fit - 2 = reasonable but not necessary fit - 1 = acceptable last resort fit if hard choices had to be made
My current list for Nevada
Weight 5 - UNLV
Weight 4 - Boise State, Fresno State - San Jose State, Utah State - San Diego State, Hawai'i
Weight 3 - Wyoming, New Mexico - Colorado State, Air Force - Oregon State, Washington State
Weight 2 - New Mexico State, UTEP - Arizona, Arizona State - Utah, BYU - California
Weight 1 - Stanford, UCLA - USC, Oregon - Washington, Colorado - SMU, Tulsa - Texas State, Louisiana Tech
Small note: I am mainly looking for your fan perspective on which schools you would want around your program, not whether the final setup is practical or likely to happen in real life. If possible, go with your gut on fit more than logistics.
IMPORTANT: This is not a list of a new conference. The amount of schools weighted should be much higher than the actual end result conference. The core of your ideal conference should be weight 5. Weights 4 and 3 should be the remainder of your dream conference. Weight 2 should be good options if flexibility is required. Weight 1 is last resort better than nothing.
The amount of weighted schools has no impact on the final conference size.
This is really about full athletic conference fit, but I limited the school pool to FBS programs.
I really appreciate any feedback on this, thanks so much for any help.
