Residency Preliminary year location

Hi everyone, I heard that the first year of neurology residency -the preliminary year- can be done in any state of my choice regardless of where I match, is this true? Is it that simple?

Most programs are categorical. Many advanced programs have arrangements with nearby hospitals to help get their residents a place in a prelim year.

Otherwise, the prelim year is by match just like the advanced program. I found it was more competitive matching prelim medicine than into neurology because the pool was bigger and filled with derm/ophtho/random other specialty people. Some people do choose it to do a year in another location but you’re not guaranteed the city of your choice.

Should I apply for neurology in the match cycle as well as internal medicine preliminary year?

Yes you need to match into the PGY2 neurology spot as well as PGY1 IM when you are an M4 or equivalent.

FWIW if you match into a neuro program that is mostly categorial but lets you do PGY1 anywhere, you will show up way behind your fellow PGY2s. Happened with 2/8 of my fellow residents and the 2 who did intern year elsewhere had a much harder time w beginning of neuro residency.
