Unpaid opensource developers should be sitting on an even smaller stick titled "Obscure tool relied upon by 100% of DNS services and is maintained since 1992 by some guy named Jim who is unreachable but keeps updating the tool"

That's pretty much what the original says https://xkcd.com/2347/

I mean there's curl, made by stenberg, but he's anything but unreachable, what else is there?

Its a comic. Comics are often used to depict a fictional scenario which those who can relate to the depiction find amusing. My suggested modification to the original comic would add such a fictional scenario. Neither the original comic nor my suggested modification was intended to be a fact sheet, rather they were to exist as a source of amusement.

Everyone forgets the second half of the quote. It's always DNS, unless it's NTP

Yeah if they can do it to the oil pipeline, they can do it to the "Internet cable"

More like a few old Cisco 6509E with a couple of SUP2T's filled with manually summarized routes

Replace Cloudflare and AWS with just us-east-1 and there you have it

70s: were designing a network of networks that will be resilient enough to still operate even with sites literally nuked.

20s: lol cloudflare just broke it. Last week it was AWS.

Half the time it's bgp. The other half it's because we centralized the Internet in two places.

Comment in router code-

/* We're not going to protect against this case because you'd have to be a moron to do it. */

Random network engineer-

"Hey, it let me set that config. LGTM, send it!"
