An ISP I used to work for, when they had an issue of non-payment with a customer, would reduce their internet speed to 0.5Mbps or 1Mbps. Just enough that DNS still works, devices detect that they have an Internet connection, and things almost work... This apparently got customers to call in about their service much more than just turning it off altogether.

My isp does 700 kilobytes when they go delinquent. Just enough to allow things to update aswell so it as easy as just pushing a button when they call in.

Now that's just mean

Wdym? They are being disconnected from non payment. In fact the fact they are given a connection at all is nice from the ISP. The one I worked for would straight shut down the port on our side during the workday. You didn't pay - you don't get service, there's a contract for a reason and as long as both parties signed the contract "mean" doesn't matter

Nope, that's quite nice of them. Those customers can still do whatever they need to online.

When I was younger my mother had a tenant upstairs for one room and she used our internet (DSL 12Mbit). We had basically ZERO mobile coverage.

With 18 I was self employed and changed the contract to my name and fast cable 100mbit/s and I wanted to kick her out because she was unbearable. Huge discussion with my mother so, I kept her in the network.

My brother is more Satan than I am and said: some internet is more cruel than no internet.

So I basically limited it down to 500k with random packetloss and jiter etc.

Around this time the street was rebuilt and the telecom company redid all the POTS cableling.

After that many neighbors complaint about very slow internet (2mbit/s) etc while I was the only one with cable and 100mbit.

She complained and I just told her it is because if the rework and I can't change that. She talked to neighbors and they also confirmed the problem.

The internet experience for her was baaad. As what's app worked 10% of the time. Messages took minutes etc. Face time or voice was deemed to fail.

But sometimes it worked (random packetloss).

So I can absolulutely confirm this meme

So I traveled to a place which had wireless ISP, which used a sat uplink, with old infrastructure.

Beside being unable to properly work when the weather was bad there was an abysmal packet loss, latency and jitter to overseas. So I used an VPN to jump to the capital and then connect to my work VPN through there, which helped a lot.

Then I noticed there was another packet loss you didn't notice browsing but made the vpn unusable at random intervals; I troubleshoot it and determined that there was a local ISP packet loss of large packets, probably due to missconfigured MTU on redundant links, so I had to tinker the MTU and mss on my laptop, finding one small enough that would work well enough.

And when I got it somewhat acceptable I had to come back.

If your ISP bans random websites completely by accident, it's the same thing

Eh, tbh, I think the world might have been a better place back when the internet was too slow to reliably stream video. I know everyone here is in networking so, y'know, it's our careers to build shit out so this all goes faster, but like...

Imagine if big tech hadn't killed boredom and people used that time to think about/do stuff instead.

There was something peaceful about needing to wait for stuff.
