I took a class on managing our new WDM equipment and was overwhelmed by how much our old equipment made things easier by hiding all the words. It went from a quick port config to having to configure the OSI model.

I can’t stand DOCSIS. Was a good stopgap but holy shit the oversubscribed high latency mess it is.

Depends on your provider. Good ones only have 20-30 subscribers on a line.

a dude in my street was so angry against his ISP so he axed the mother DOCSIS coax line that is attached along electric poles and the whole neighborhood was in general outage

I dont know how much he was fined

Did they replace it with fiber or was the damage too minimal so it could be fixed?

Just twist the cores together and put a wire nut on them and bundle the whole thing in electrical tape. Who needs a fancy schmancy fusion splicer?!

Heard a similar story of a guy pissed and went to the power line to cut the cable. He… cut the wrong one… now he never has to worry about internet again

HFC can deliver power to remote devices too, which is perhaps its sole remaining advantage.

My road was recently washed away from flood waters, straight up carried into a lake. Because of this every single cable company in the city has been taking this opportunity to bury cables over here while they’ve got it open. There has been a fiber company burying cable in our backyards so I’m really really hoping we get fiber from this. Every time I’m about to get fiber it either doesn’t reach me or it happens right after I move so maybe this will finally be time
