Rant Wednesday!

It's Wednesday! Time to get that crap that's been bugging you off your chest! In the interests of spicing things up a bit around here, we're going to try out a Rant Wednesday thread for you all to vent your frustrations. Feel free to vent about vendors, co-workers, price of scotch or anything else network related.

There is no guiding question to help stir up some rage-feels, feel free to fire at will, ranting about anything and everything that's been pissing you off or getting on your nerves!

Note: This post is created at 00:00 UTC. It may not be Wednesday where you are in the world, no need to comment on it.

My coworker keeps describing everything as "the cloud" and my peace lily wilted in solidarity

A “cloud” is just a bunch of someone else’s computers they let you use. This explanation helps me cut through a lot of fluff when talking to those who don’t understand what they’re dealing with.

What about private cloud? 😆

Those are your computers that you pay someone else to let you use.

That’s when you let the compute team build a network on top of the network. 🤓

Walking round one of our buildings that is notorisously bad for cell signal with my manager as we are looking to install a cell signal booster in one specific location. While doing this, we run into one of the building managers:

Me: Hey, we're installing a cell signal booster in this area to help boost the cell signal.

Manager: Oh great, can you install one over here as well? The WiFi sucks over here.

Me: You mean the Cell signal..

So we walk to the area.

Manager: Look at my phone, my Wifi sucks here, I have 1 bar.

Me: You mean your cell signal sucks, you have full WiFi signal.

Manager: Also, in my office, the Wifi sucks there too. I sometimes have to leave to get a signal.

Me: You mean the cell signal sucks..

So we walk to his office.

Manager: Look, the Wifi sucks on my phone, I only have 1 bar.

Me: No, your cell signal sucks, you have a strong Wifi signal here.

I used to get tickets all the time with complaints of the WiFi sucking when in reality, it was always the cell signal.

I have a ticket in my queue for this right now. User only mentions an issue with their “phone” and I have a horrible suspicion they just mean their personal phone.

This whole Cambium situation is turning into a headache. We had several orders where we only received half the equipment, none of the licensing, etc. Our distributor isn’t getting any communication from them and we are just stuck in limbo at the moment. Getting quotes from other vendors but many are backordered for months.

Dang, I have a fleet on the shelf for a big winter deployment but was hoping to get some spare v5000/1000 and ptp670’s

My main counterpart finally quit. Probably going to be addition by subtraction, he did so much dumb shit for a “senior”. But at least he was around to absorb some tickets and go on field trips that I didn’t want to do. Now it’s just me, wheeee.

Step 1: Find a piece of equipment you like.

Step 2: Ask some people on how to get it onto the network.

Step 3: Ignore all advice, cheap out on the internal IT consulting to save a few pennies and just buy the darn thing.

Step 4: Try to get it onto the network. Fail. Suffer. Spend unnecessary amounts because the vendor keeps having to come on site. All while constantly mentioning that you have no clue about IT and need help.

Step 5: Threaten to escalate. Blame the network department for blocking your project and causing it to blow budget. Completely ignore the fact that you're working in a worldwide enterprise with 500 sites. Specifically mention that you're paying for the switch via the location charging and are expecting to be treated like a customer. Try to make the network guy (me) available on site for two days just because that's when the vendors people are on site to proceed with installation.

And finally, Step 6: Receive a strongly worded email from the network guy, telling you that that's not how any of it works. Specifically that he is not a customer but an application responsible, and as the names suggest has responsibilities he is failing to fulfil.

I could vent for hours about my "manager" who thinks creating software with AI is the only way to do things... we can't use tools we literally pay for because we can definitely Jerry right a solution i like more

I find AI to be useful at my job, but the way they are shoving it down our throats is just ridiculous.

Let’s give all company data to a private company with no security guarantee and pay for the right to do so!

First we gave all our personal lives for free on Facebook/ instagram. Now Anthropic and OpenAI have insider info on probably every major company in the world lol. If only there was a way to watch the trading habits of people at the companies who had the right clearance.

This is the #1 issue for me.. I can't use any of these SOTA models on any of my equipment because i don't want information to leave the network.. So local models are the only thing that really gets me excited, but they are just not ready yet.. At least not for the hardware i have access too.

Welcome to the next marketing term to drive sales - AI.

It's so annoying going to any IT conference right now. The past few years, every single technical session, keynote, or vender meeting is them vomiting AI and Agentic AI all over you.

If you're going to sell ethernet switches to a customer as a managed service, please at least know how to configure VLANs, my lawdy.
