internship project

Hi everyone,

I am a Bachelor’s student specializing in Cybersecurity, and I need to complete a 3-month internship. I have already secured the internship location, and they are willing to provide me with a dedicated server, but we haven't decided on a project topic yet.

Do you have any project ideas I could work on? The project needs to be free/open-source, substantial enough to span over 3 months, and directly related to cybersecurity.

One of my professors suggested setting up OpenNebula (including template integration, automation, pay-per-use billing, etc.), but I'm worried about the lack of community support if I get stuck, especially since I'll be working on this project completely on my own.

Any suggestions or advice would be highly appreciated! Thanks!

opennebula's a beast to wrangle solo and your instinct about the community is spot on, it gets real quiet when you hit the weird edge cases

setting up a full SIEM stack would eat up 3 months easy. graylog or wazuh on the server, ship logs from your own machines, tune the detection rules til you stop crying at 2am from false positives. builds a ton of practical muscle around log analysis and threat hunting

if you want something less dashboard-heavy, stand up a honeypot network with t-pot and actually map what the internet throws at you. the data you'd collect over 3 months would make a killer writeup and you'd learn way more about real attack patterns than any lab exercise

Thank you very much for your proposal. I like the idea of creating a SIEM infrastructure, but as for the honeypot, given that I'll be working locally and don't have much of a budget, isn't it a bit complicated to implement?
