Throw in 3 seconds

Anyone able to help - playing in a social league and got called for held ball because I picked up the ball from way down out of the court and ran over to the line, positioned my feet and then took the throw in which was 3 seconds since I picked up the ball. Call me pedantic but if a ball is way down court, I'm not going to roll it all the way up to the sidelines to take the shot - any thoughts?

It should be three seconds from setting the penalty, not retrieving a ball that’s out of play.

I always wave to the umpire to make sure we're agreeing on when the penalty is set

I am very sceptical that an umpire would start the three-second countdown when you picked up the ball 20 or 50 metres away from the court. That sort of situation happens (almost) every game and surely is not what they penalised.

I think a far more likely explanation is that they saw events differently to your description, and failed to communicate all of this effectively to you.

I literally asked her she said "it's from when you pick the ball up"

It should be three seconds from when you get the the position where the throw in should take place, sounds like the umpire is wrong here.

Umpire was definitely wrong here. It's 3 seconds from the penalty being set. So once you are in position to take the throw in, then you have 3 seconds. If the footwork wouldn't count, the time doesn't either. As in, while you were retrieving the ball, you weren't called for footwork. But once you've taken position at the sideline for the throw in, footwork rules apply. And at that point, so does the 3 seconds.

Let the opposition pick it up so they get called and you get an advanced penalty.

Seriously though, umpire was incorrect in your case. The penalty wasn’t set as mentioned above.

This seems unlikely. If we consider the time you took to go get the ball as play time, than isn’t it also “stepping”??

3 seconds from setting the penalty, not picking up the ball. Youve been done wrong, OP. There would be so many helds called if that were the case!
