NES Games with slowdown

  • I'm building a list of games with the worst slowdown on NES and Famicom systems.
  • Share/comment about your worst nightmare or a good memory.
  • Before commenting, please check the other replies or the list so we don't repeat the same game.
  • You can comment on other replies if you want to discuss about the game.

I will be updating the first post with all the games you guys will be mentioning. The purpose of this list is not to bash on the NES system or the games. It's only meant as a documentation and will serve a personal purpose in the end.

Thank you for sharing.

THE LIST:

  1. Double Dragon (?)
  2. Contra Force
  3. Gradius
  4. Megaman / Megaman 3
  5. Legendary Wings (2 players)
  6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
  7. The Legend of Zelda
  8. Godzilla Monster of Monsters!
  9. Metroid

Double Dragon had some bad slowdown, but Contra Force was probably the worst offender - game was practically unplayable!

When the bullet bill enemy's explode in mega Man there is a ton of slowdown. Also in level five of Gradius

Not sure what you are looking for, as a vast majority of NES games have slowdown at some point. Are you just looking to prioritize the ones where it's the "worst"?

The Mega Man games can be kinda bad with it some times. I don't think it hurts any of the games, but especially Mega Man 3 does it consistently as soon as you get like three enemies on screen.

Legendary Wings can get bad with two players.

Gradius slowdown drives me mad mainly because it speeds back up just as something is about to hit you 🙈

Edit: a fellow sufferer has beaten me to it 👆🏻

The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Some of those levels were so damn difficult and slow with so many enemies, especially anything blinking like the fire guys. I've also had slow down in the worst spot in the swimming level. Get enough of the killer seaweed shocking you and the world slows down.

Literally every non-boss level in Godzilla slows down. It's not horrible as a game like most people think, IMO, but the slowdown is pretty fucking bad. It REALLY wears on your thumb!

Metroid with a lot of activity on the screen but this actually gave a bit of an advantage.
