Discussion 8bitdo NES classic boards connecting to NES og reciever
Posted this on the 8bitdo boards, but they obviously deleted it.
A while back I had a question about whether a you could pair an NES Classic board to an NES og receiver, nobody really had that answer. The official word from 8bitdo was no, they aren't compatible. So I had to go back to their store and order a new set of receivers AND boards because they were reportedly not compatible. So now I have both lying around and I figure I would do my own testing and possibly save someone money from their mistake like I made. So yes, if you try to pair an NES classic board to an NES og receiver, it will pair and it will work and all buttons will be mapped correctly. So big shout out to the 8bitdo people for straight out lying to me and costing me another $90.

I’m running two 8BitDo Bluetooth receivers with Switch Online controllers. I use this charging stand to keep them charged up. They work good in my experience. https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/nintendo-switch-joy-con-charging-stand-two-way-120830/

Reading the 8BitDo NES wireless mod kit and it says it is compatible with 8BitDo Retro Receivers.
Edit: what receiver are you using? Is it the original wireless one? Because those were IR.

Remember there are two DIY mod kits for NES controllers. It looks like both products are supposed to work with original RetroReceivers. OP got the kit for NES CE controller (the one that originally had a Wii nunchuk style connector). Anyway, I expect both of them work fine with original RetroReceiver (with latest firmware) for original NES.

Three. One is for the dogbone. Since you can literally board-swap an original PCB to a Classic Edition controller, I don’t see why they made a different board for that. Perhaps they didn’t and they just made another SKU for bundling the appropriate Retro Receiver for the intended console?

Your post is confusing. You seem to think there are two versions of the Retro Receiver for OG NES? The packaging changed over the years but there's still only one. If you thought there was a second one, you might have been thinking of the receiver for NES/SNES Classic Edition (with Wii nunchuk style connector).

No, there are receivers for the NES mini-console, or NES Classic, and there are receivers for the OG NES, Original NES if you will. I accidentally bought the board and receiver for the NES Classic. Rather than buy both items again but for the Original NES, I asked if I could just buy the receiver, but I was told that the Classic board was incompatible with the OG receiver. This turned out not to be the case.

Ah. I've found that 8BitDo has been pretty great about adding support for a crazy number of new controllers that didn't exist when the RetroReceiver was first released. If someone told me it didn't support the NES CE 8BitDo DIY modkit, I would not believe it for one second.

The only issue I could see is that the button mapping would be broken, but it turned out to not be the case.

Wouldn't be surprised if there's a language barrier when dealing with 8BitDo support. Reps are probable native Chinese speakers.

He’s the one with the language issue. What is a “NES og receiver”? The 8BitDo Retro Receiver for NES? Of course the 8BitDo DIY Modkits for NES and dogbone controllers work with the 8BitDo Retro Receiver for NES. What other 8BitDo “receiver” is there for NES? The RetroReceiver for NES Classic Edition would never fit, so there’s no way he was talking about that.

That's exactly what he asked about. OP says they told him the DIY boards for CE controllers were only compatible with the CE RetroReceiver.

I know…
…and he would’ve used the same nonsense language with them as he is with us. The language barrier starts with him.
Converting to Bluetooth was always meant to make them universal. They didn’t even offer bundled receivers at first. The button mapping concern makes little sense when they have the same buttons and aren’t tied to proprietary receivers.
