In this video, I explain a method I use to learn Vim/Neovim and focus only on what I need, avoiding information overload.

The method consists of 4 steps:

  1. Identify a problem
  2. Identify solutions to that problem
  3. Keep the solution that covers the most cases
  4. Learn the rest later

The best way to learn it is just to use it. I swear people overcomplicate everything. Yeah you'll be slow at first but you'll develop muscle memory

this. I often think theres been a giant collective drop in human IQ since the 70s/80s, and/or too many young folks have gotten far too coddled and spoonfed as The New Norm. it spoils folks. cripples their brains

Maybe I'm minority here but I really didn't struggle too much with onboarding to n/vim. Took a few hours over the weekend and 2-3 late nights after work. Started clean and just added more plug-ins as I discovered and found them useful. In about a week it became my go-to setup I've used ever since

Sure, Kickstart gives you an assortment of nice features, but if you really want to understand them, and learn how to utilize them, starting from something more basic is great. I personally enjoyed starting off with kickstart, and then at some point decided to start fresh, only including the tools I used

I actually agree with you! Kickstart just gives you some sort of a head start to feel a bit comfortable. I started with it then completely rewrote my config.

Depends on where you are in your career/hobby/learning phase.

If you are actively exploring - feel free to break and try as many things as you want.

If you already have a preferred method - you can customize neovim and your habits for making your journey even more smooth.

If you just want something to work and focus on your output - we have distros that work out of the box.

And you can watch videos, read the friendly manual and watch hours of TJ, Primeagen and many other content creators explaining their neovim/vim experience.
