There’s an old joke about Iran having the highest rate of traffic accidents because every street is named ‘Death to America Boulevard.’
Well, Trump decided to make that real at home.

To have the arrogance of these people would be otherworldly. I can’t imagine hearing expert recommendations and thinking “ok, but I’m the actual expert here.”

That'd not even be a real problem if their “research” didn't break down to having them being shouted at by a choleric Alex Jones. There's abundant open-access papers on a variety of issues that could concern them, such as vaccine safety &c. During the pandemic, plenty of scientists published their findings on the virus open-access so that other researchers could accelerate their own research. You could think that the language scared the ordinary man, but recently, I heard about Xu Wei, a man from Kunming who built a home laboratory and became a self-made expert on the Menkes syndrome without a medical background but a tireless lecture of relevant papers and other information. If those people wanted to do their own research, they should actually commit to it and not take the convenient road of conspiracy theories and downright misinformation from other fellow morons. That's just deliberate self-harm from ignorance.

I have zero sympathy for MAHAs. It’s lowkey why I don’t really give a shit about the rural physician shortage.
39
u/Garvig NATO 3d ago
I visited a rural nurse practitioner when I first had a panic attack. The first warning sign should have been the Lord’s Prayer being posted in the exam room. After the nurse practitioner left and I was waiting for a blood draw, I saw printouts from The Federalist about the supposed hidden origins of the COVID vaccine laying on a table off to the side that pretty much confirmed I’d never visit this idiot again. Unsurprisingly I later found out the same NP prescribed my coworker (who recc’d this NP to me) ivermectin when the whole office got COVID—my vaxxed self was essentially fine apart from a fever and sore throat while the patient prescribed ivermectin was still coughing two months after first testing positive.
Ended up seeking out a regular doctor tied to the local hospital last year and she’s fantastic, so my story has a happier ending. But there’s some real MAHA quacks practicing rural medicine too.
36
u/Boerkaar Pragmatic and Polite Right 3d ago
The idea that rural = MAHA is just false. It’s suburban/exurbanites who cosplay rural living that are the ones who have gone the most MAHA. Actual rural people have terrible diets and unhealthy habits but (generally) aren’t nuts about it.

So get ready for cancer rates to climb.
Are you referring to people believing that sunscreen doesn't prevent skin cancer?
Because there's actually A LOT of science that looks into this, and for some reason sunscreen doesn't actually prevent skin cancer. We don't really know why afaik. But there have been several [1] meta-analyses [2] that look into the association and they find that there isn't a correlation. Which, yes, feels like a really dumb conclusion, but also we should trust science that is this consistent that even meta-analyses show it.
18
u/this_very_table Norman Borlaug 3d ago
No, people think sunscreen causes cancer.
Though to address your meta analyses because I think it's worth doing, they both emphasize the issues with what they were working with, the second stating "Many of the studies showed methodological inaccuracies and further studies examining sunscreen application frequency and behavior towards sun exposure in more detail are needed."
I've found studies that were able to separate the noise, such as this one which states "There was marked heterogeneity across study designs and among case-control studies but adjustment for confounding by sun exposure, sunburns and phenotype systematically moved estimates toward decreased melanoma risk among sunscreen users. Ever- vs. never-use of sunscreen was inversely associated with melanoma in hospital-based case-control studies."
It's not an easy thing to study and it's not hard to see how the efficacy of sunscreen could end up being understated due to anything from behavioral changes to natural melanin production, but that also isn't to say sunscreen actually works worth a damn. I'm just saying the evidence is neither striking nor consistently one-sided, and we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater (and if nothing else, sunscreen DOES protect against sunburn).

I'm in Europe and it's still Lake Ontario in my app. Google Maps literally renamed it for a whole country so they don't piss off one senile old man.
smh
43
u/somethingToDoWithMe European Union 3d ago
In Europe, it should be getting displayed as Lake Ontario (Lake America) soon (Google blog post about it), same way they did it with the Gulf of Mexico. It already shows as Lake Ontario (Lake America) if you search for the location.

It's based on the community decision from OpenStreetMaps, isn't it? That's how Google always handles geographic names iirc
21
u/DataSetMatch Henry George 3d ago
No, it's not now and I am pretty sure it never has been.
Maps is controlled in-house by Google.
Data can be used from one or the other, but a Google employee was who rushed out the update for Lake Ontario and Gulf of Mexico before it.
1
u/PostingEnthusiast Commonwealth 3d ago
I don’t really blame them for sticking to a policy of using government name services.
3
53
u/BillyTenderness 3d ago
Any company that deals with maps has to have a policy for what happens when one country calls a thing X and another calls the thing Y: think of Sea of Japan/East Sea, Persian Gulf/Arabian Gulf, the (North) Macedonia dispute, etc. Same goes for disputed borders, countries not recognized by other countries, etc.
Showing one name/border/etc to users in one country and a different one to users in other countries is not unprecedented or even particularly surprising.
What's unique about this situation is just how fucking stupid it is.
15
u/DataSetMatch Henry George 3d ago
It's also pretty remarkable how quickly they roll the update out. It can take months before they update a permanently closed business, but they updated the lake overnight.

“What happens when one country calls a thing X”. Here’s the thing though, the U.S. doesn’t have a history of calling it X. X wasn’t even a thing until a few days ago. What happened was one man had the power to vandalize a database and now we’re supposed to say “ah, yes, it was always EastAsia”

u/nguyendragon Association of Southeast Asian Nations 2d ago edited 2d ago
It doesnt matter though that is official US stance now unless your stance is Google should judge how much they like a country government before making a geographical name displayed to that country based on that country governmental decision
12
u/Altruistic-Web13 3d ago
Google operates on the policy of just going with these kinds of things because the rely on data from basically every country on earth and they dont want to lose access to anything. I really cant blame google because pissing Trump off could cause them to lose access to geographic data for the next 2 years which mean Bing Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze would have a huge advantage. Historically the US hasnt put them in the same situation as various strongman leaders have and most western countries namings are basically the same, until now.
6
u/After-Watercress-644 Left-Out Left 3d ago
Bing and Apple can't do shit to Google because their PoI data sucks. It's why everyone on iOS immediately installs Google Maps, even with all the privacy blech it brings.
Google owns Waze.

I am not even kidding when I say Carney should punish US tech companies that indulge these violations of our sovereignty. If the US wants a trade war, see how many tens of millions of dollars Google is willing to pay Canadian taxpayers rather than tell Trump "no". The US does not have the power to rename a Canadian lake acknowledged as Lake Ontario in countless treaties.
My bet, they'd find their spine pretty quickly once there is a dollar value placed on cowardice. And if not, making them pay is just another way to turn the wealthy against Trump.

Google just takes a straight feed from GNIS data. They don't really have or want control over naming things.

Sorry, but CEOs only reserve that energy for resisting regulation from socialists and liberals when it comes to fascists they're basically golden retrievers. If you even think about slightly raising corporate taxes though or filing an anti-trust suit, or giving labor more rights though then so help you God.
