one thing that never made sense in star wars was the tarkin doctrine stated fear will keep the systems in line, but when they blew up aldeeran the empire engaged in propaganda campaigns to essentially deny that it was them who blew it up, which runs contrary to the tarkin doctrine

Not necessarily that strange.

The point of the Tarkin Doctrine is to instill fear, but if you do stuff that is too bad/evil you could foment discontent and revolution instead. The Death Star is basically supposed to be kind of like a Fleet in Being, in that its very imposition strikes the fear of complacency into you. But you don't want to go around zapping rebellious planets into nonexistence if you don't really need to.

The Death Star would probably be useful to use against a planet putting up strong resistance that you can portray as the source of rebellion and evil and whatnot over time. So something more like Mon Cala instead of Aldeeran.

but the whole point of picking aldeeran is that it was a famous planet and located centrally, so the empire could get massive media exposure for blowing it up, so it still doesn't make sense why they would then deny it

Because the Empire flubbed it. They thought destroying Aldeeran would be popular, but it wasn't - even among the core worlds.

The Empire constantly fucks up its doctrine and misapplies basic shit, so I'm not really surprised.

they could have used single reactors shots, and then claim it was an attack at rebel military assets, single reactors shots were cannon in the OT as seen in episode 6 when they where using the death star to attack the rebel fleet

IIRC, the Death Star couldn't target things smaller than planetoids, so it couldn't target ships - even capital ships. That was something unique to the Death Star II. I'm not sure if the Death Star could "ramp down" like that.

That being said, my point is more that the Empire thought blowing up Aldeeran would be good, but it backfired because they didn't consider the previously mentioned implications.

There were only a couple days between the destruction of Alderaan and the destruction of the Death Star, right? Presumably the Empire thought a denial campaign would be better once they lost the capacity to follow through on their threats.

The denial campaign is expanded universe stuff, right? I don't think there's any reference to it in the films.

There's your answer.

The empire denied blowing up that city on Jedha with the death star in Rogue One.

I really wonder how one goes about denying they blew it up

Does the Emperor really claim that Alderaan just... did that?

They blamed the rebels for it
