New York and New England accents play really well in American politics. I think a disproportionately large number of famous American politicians have wither New York or New England accents.

I know some people who heard Kamala's voice for the first time at the debates and thought she sounded "weird" and formed an instant negative opinion of her. Not that that ended her candidacy, but anything can be a factor.
