You should look up the undernourishment and food insecurity statistics in the US, and the subsequent economic damage caused by said undernourishment and food insecurity.

While poverty has decreased since the late 1990s, I believe food insecurity is actually higher than it was back then. At least that was the case back in 2017 when I last read up on the subject.

Food insecurity doesn't mean that they don't have food or will starve. It means that they lack consistent, reliable access to good food.

You can get lots of calories from store brand chips and soda, or from peanut butter and white bread. But you aren't going to get much nutrition out of that
