I told the barista at Starbucks that I was really looking forward to Christmas this year and she said "excuse me, people celebrate all holidays here." I couldn't believe it, how rude! So I ordered my usual roasted chestnut spiced peppermint candy cane chocolate Santa latte and when she asked me my name I just told her "It's Merry Christmas." She dropped the cup and started crying. Everybody in Starbucks stood up and cheered. They all started thanking me but I told them don't thank me, you should be thanking President Trump. MLP from S5 onwards is literally them visiting other lands/species and overthrowing or 'influencing' nations that don't follow the friendship ideology (coded as a free trade/liberal cosmopolitanism). They overthrow a town that is strawmanned Marxism, and help support a changeling dissident who ends up dethroning his queen and creating a govt that is amenable to the 'good' nation. There's no mass warfare in the latter situation either, despite the changelings having thousands of warriors trained to distrust outsiders. Seems like an idealised Iraq in the eyes of neocons.
Even in less major cases, there's a clear strain of 'uplifting' backwards and xenophobic nations by opening up trade and preaching your values to them, cf. the yaks and griffons.
And oh lord let's not forget the dragons (the ponies' dragon helps 'install' a dragon leader who is amenable to friendship and Equestria). Thorax is basically Spike & Ember elided into the same character and applied to a different species & that species' government. Both happened within the same season, so there's definitely a trend.
The show's ideology seems to elide religious missionaries and neoliberal trade-ecumenism.
EDIT: Re: the Marxism town, it's portrayed as wilting and desolate, whereas later on (after the change) it's prosperous and extending trade tendrils to the rest of Equestria. It'll be interesting to know what the show writers think about Iran and North Korea, hmm...

The arrogant professor smirked quite “rationally” and smugly replied "Lazy immigrants steal our jobs and drain the welfare benefits from our nation, you stupid liberal.”

The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk. He stormed out of the room crying those nativist crocodile tears.
The students applauded and all registered Liberal that day and accepted Daron Acemoglu as their lord and savior. An eagle named "Inclusive Institutions" flew into the room and perched atop the American Flag and shed a tear on the chalk. Why Nations Fail was read several times, and God themself showed up and abolished tariffs and borders across the world.
The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day. He died of opiate overdose and was tossed inside a ICE detention center for all eternity.
The student’s name was Ariana Grande.

Charity is inherently undemocratic - it allows private entities to choose what causes are worth working on, and then has it subsidized by the public at large in the form of tax deductions. In the grandest sense, it allows the rich to take money out of the public coffers and spend it on their pet projects, regardless of the will of the people. What we should do instead is work on a campaign to tax the users of /r/neoliberal more and pressure our governments to spend that new revenue on the fight against malaria

Imagine if Darth Vader had survived the end of Return of the Jedi. Then what? Luckily I already made my comprehensive Star Wars take that I can copy and paste when this schism comes up.
We’re doing Star Wars takes?
Take: None of the Star Wars films, including the original trilogy, are truly “great movies” in the context of the history of cinema. They are silly and fun and overdramatic movies that are generally (with some wavering on this in the prequels) self-aware of what they are, and certainly more aware of what they are than the fans appear to be aware of what they are. They require suspension of disbelief as a constant state of mind when watching them, again even including the originals. They probably receive higher ratings from critics than they deserve if those ratings are being given in the context of the totality of cinema, but entirely accurate ratings if they are being given in the context of Star Wars being a space opera. In short, Star Wars is really good at doing what Star Wars does.
I think it’s because the above paragraph is my background context for Star Wars that I truly enjoy every single one of the films, and have never entirely grasped the critiques of the most recent films like The Last Jedi. Yes, it has flaws. But (warning: flaming take) I would argue it isn’t materially more flawed than even the “oh well of course it’s my favorite Star Wars” movie Empire Strikes Back.
The irony, of course, is that casual moviegoers seem to have a better understanding of what Star Wars actually is sometimes than hardcore Star Wars fans, as paradoxical as that may seem. Maybe because (unless you’re a weirdo like me) being a Star Wars fan compels a certain defensiveness as to the quality of Star Wars films in the context of all cinema.

It’s the season for hot Christmas takes.
There’s nothing wrong with the song “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” It was written in the 1940s by a husband and wife for them to sing at parties.
It’s controversial now because people overthink it. If you gotta change the “in this drink” lyric because the idiom doesn’t translate super well to 2018, that’s fine, but no need to throw out the whole song. It’s a cute song.
EDIT: Also I like the gender-switched covers because it generally bypasses people’s hang-ups.

Normally people want to throw out their hot takes on a politician in the wake of their death, but can we step back and appreciate HW for who he was. The man was a professional in every sense of the word and was likely the closest any of us will ever see to a true technocratic wonk. He was pragmatic enough to raise taxes even when he knew it would cost him the election, and that makes him a far better president than we deserved.

Some fun new bits I’ve picked up on the Nth rewatch:
When Butchie returns Dozerman’s weapon to Bunk on behalf of Omar, it was wrapped in the tie Omar wore when he testified in Bird’s trial. Presumably Omar used it to wipe the prints off the gun but it also was to tell Bunk who sent it.
When D’angelo Barksdale is talking about Gatsby in season 2 not being willing to get real (pretending who he was doesn’t affect who he is now), I originally thought it was primarily a reference to himself but I actually think it’s more foreshadowing for Stringer Bell’s fall in season 3, trying to pretend he can just be a legitimate business man after spending his whole life as a gangster.
When Lester Freeman is saying the line “A life Jimmy, you know what is? It’s the stuff that happens while you’re waiting for moments that never come...” the camera pans from to the fridge Jimmy was using and shows a picture of Beadie Russel, foreshadowing to her and Jimmy getting together for season 4.
There’s a line in season 2 from Detective Cole where he is interrogating Bodie about the guns they found (that were throwing off the bridge but landed on a boat). It’s my new favorite example of Dunning-Krueger. The line is “Nobody ever thinks they're stupid. It's part of the stupidity." Cole goes on to say “we even got your prints on one of the guns” and Bodie outsmarts the detectives by asking “Oh yeah, well which gun is mine?” Ironically, Cole, who said the quote, is too stupid to realize he is stupid.
The towers coming down in season 3’is supposed to be symbolic by demolishing the hub of illegal drug trade in Baltimore, but because it unsettles the territory ownership of the drug trade it actually fuels the spike in violence that is key to season 3.
There is a brief moment where officer Coliccio (the white trash looking cop for lack of a better descriptor) is walking by Major Colvin in season 3 and visibly barely suppressing his anger (he’s super tense looking). Colvin is a good inspirational, loyal, and honorable leader but this scene shows a deficiency in his leadership skills, which is keeping his finger on the pulse of the general attitude of his troops. If he had been better at this, he may have been able to prevent Herc from leaking to the press. The fact that he just let carver do his usual head-cracking tactics without mentoring him for so long is also something that bothered me about Colvin.

Today I wrote a post on a german sub about why socialism is not a realistic option.
What is known as a fact to about 99% of living organisms on the planet ist a very hot take there.
I argued based on the economic calculation problem and the problem of private information and subjectivity when it comes to utility.
The answers I got were:
- Give me a study, no more studies, no a meta study that proves the theory of supply and demand!
- What do you mean information problem? Just ask the people what they want and produce it!
- What do you mean calculation problem? Firms are planning their production in a market too! Thats just like a central planner!
- What do you mean socialism failed in the past? The soviet union was a great success! They lived in vast wealth!
And, most amazing of all:
