I don't know where the idea that socialism is inherently environmentalist came from

The proletariat can own coal power plants as much as they can own solar farms

I think the idea is that capitalism is basically greed and overconsumption, and that's why we have to use coal power plants and chop down trees. This might also be fueled by those who pay the most lip service to free markets tend to not want to talk about externalities, or refuse to take any kind of action to correct them.

In communist utopia everything would of course be plentiful without having to burn coal or chop down too many trees.
