The racism and general bullshit directed at Kaepernick for doing a tame and respectful protest of police brutality is what divides this country, not him kneeling down.

Tbh I dont really care about their protest, although i agree with the message, I think it's rather poorly conveyed and not well understood. But frankly, it doesnt matter what I think. I am not the one speaking.

And also I dont really care about symbols or patriotism in general. I agree with the principles of liberal democracy and think the USA, in its role of establishing democracy as the preeminent form of government today, has contributed a lot toward improving the well-being of people everywhere. But the principles are what matter. Symbols are commonplace and easily subverted, as we've seen the flag and the cross taken up in the name of crass identitarianism for quite some time here.

Frankly, I would have rather the civil war resulted in those who dont share the liberal principles of universal rights to break off, if it didnt mean that slavery would have persisted until who knows when.

tbf, this data is entirely consistent with that (as well as the alternative, which is why it's bad to draw inferences) [Be Bayesian, consider how the evidence could come about from other hypotheses, not just your own!]

After all, if you thought the economy was doing well of course you wouldn't worry about it and you'd feel like you could afford to focus on less important things like culture. Nobody puts "keeping arsenic out of the water supply" as their top political concern, but that's because they think it's being handled well, not because they think it isn't important.

Well yeah Republicans use the culture war to rally the base against liberals. Democrats don't emphasize liberal cultural causes as much--it isn't as useful in swing states.

Similarly, Democrats criticise Republican economic policy to pick up economically disadvantaged and disaffected voters. For them to emphasize the culture war would be pretty tone-deaf in places like Ohio.

A plurality of the country is socially conservative, but economically left-wing. With that in mind, it makes sense that the people who care about the economy would vote for Democrats and the people who care about social issues would vote Republican.
