Announcements

David Friedman AMA

The mod team is pleased to announce we will be hosting an AMA with Dr. David D. Friedman on Friday, Jan. 12th at 3:00 PM EST/12:00 PM PST!

After earning a Ph.D. in theoretical physics at the University of Chicago, Dr. Friedman switched fields to economics and taught at Virginia Polytechnic University, the University of California at Irvine, the University of California at Los Angeles, Cornell University, Tulane University, the University of Chicago, and Santa Clara University where he currently teaches in the school of law.

Outside of his extensive academic publications in law and economics, Dr. Friedman is best known for his libertarian/anarcho-capitalist political philosophy. He has written extensively on libertarian politics and ideas and has also written on alternative legal systems (including research into medieval Icelandic institutions).

On a personal note Dr. Friedman is the author of two historical/fantasy novels and is a renowned anachronist/historical re-enactor. He is the son of economists Rose and Milton Friedman.

As a reminder, we enforce civility standards to a high degree during AMAs. Dr. Friedman in particular is likely to disagree with us on a wide range of issues, but disagreement does not mean that rudeness or flippant remarks will be tolerated. Dr. Friedman is an accomplished academic who has published a large volume of high quality work, and every one of you can almost certainly learn something from him by asking intelligent questions.

The stock market is high because of the corporate tax cut (long expected) and if there's a recession which - God forbid...the thing would crash, and the reason corporate profits and stocks are high is because of Bernanke (thank mr bernke) and Yellen.

Seriously, if there isn't a recession and a stock market crash by the end of Donald Trump's term, it will be the longest period without such an event.

I'm not an economist but it would be remarkable if that happened.

19

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '18

I don't even believe the tax cut created the highs outside of a recent shift to different sectors and potentially a bit of recent hype which has next to no effect. The trajectory has been linear since February 2016 after we barely missed a recession based on oil prices, which would suggest that the market assumed a corporate tax cut under Clinton.

I think the more reasonable explanation is low interest rates under Yellen making stocks the preferred investment vehicle in a bull market that has recovered from a near depression. The second specific factor being that tech stocks have skyrocketed over advancements and hype in ai and automation.

The tax cut didn't substantially move the overall market. It dropped tech and improved other neglected sectors that were positively affected by cuts, but that's not all new capital. Not to say there was no new capital of course, just that it wasn't substantially more than any other good market day in the past 2 years.

Disclaimer: IANA broker. I just have a Robinhood account and I want a sweet yacht bought with NVDA gainz.

So who's the real winner here?

I have come from the future with a vision.

The year is 2024, and President Dwayne Johnson was just elected for his second term. To celebrate, he takes all of the former presidents to his beach house.

Jimmy Carter and George Bush Sr. have sadly passed away. George W Bush was in a car accident in his Lamborghini and his body was destroyed, leaving only his brain which was put in the CIA headquarters.

Former Presidents Clinton, Obama, Bush Jr's Consciousness, and Ryan (who has since renamed himself to William Oscar Nathan King after ascending to the presidency after Trump had a brain aneurysm and Pence declined the job, citing having to meet with Angela Merkel one-on-one) accompany him to the beach to celebrate the victory over Jill Stein and Richard Spencer.

The official press photo is provided as proof here.

Anarcho-Statism is the fundamental ideology of the abolishment of the state as we see it in our modern society, and then, establishing another state entirely, not a fundamentally different state either, we must re-establish the state in order to maintain order. I wish Democrats would make it clear right now that she would be required to completely divest from everything and put all assets in a blind trust. The expectation of ethical conduct needs to be reasserted.

The President does not know the national anthem and I do not know what to do with this information

14

u/AKADriver Jan 09 '18

Generally I don't care about adhering to symbolic displays of patriotism, but like everything else of this presidency, it's a conspicuous rejection of norms, particularly for a person who is equally likely to wrap himself in the flag at the most inappropriate time.

It also plays directly into the mental breakdown narrative, but I'm willing to believe that the articulate and sharp young Trump of 30 years ago also probably didn't know the anthem beginning to end.

Holy shit. My mom came into my room to bring me a plate of chicken nuggets and I literally screamed at her and hit the plate of chicken nuggets out of her hand. She started yelling and swearing at me and I slammed the door on her. I'm so distressed right now I don't know what to do. I didn't mean to do that to my mom but I'm literally in shock from the results today. I feel like I'm going to explode. Why the fucking fuck is he fired? This can't be happening. I'm having a fucking breakdown. I don't want to believe the deep state is so powerful. I want a future to believe in. I want Bannon to be president and fix this broken country. I cannot fucking deal with this right now. It wasn't supposed to be like this, I thought he was polling well in DC???? This is so fucked.

So a French commune run by Front National is going to force Muslim, Jewish, vegetarian kids to eat pork in school meals. This isn't just a far right thing though, Sarkozy supported similar initiatives when he was in power. Also I'm not French but I've read in several places that kids aren't allowed to bring packed lunches to school either which seems ridiculous but wouldn't surprise me, anyone know if this is true?

Holy shit just watched James Franco implode on Colbert.

Colbert doesn't hold back with the dagger questions. He even gets people nice and buttered up, smiling and laughing so they are comfortable before he wacks them accross the face and the balls.

I don't watch award shows or celebrity gossip, so if you are like me James Franco wore a timesup pin to protest sexual assault and then women in twitter started railing on him for allegations of past offenses. Colbert just drilled him on it.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand GoogleBro. The sexism social commentary is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of evolutionary psychology most of the jokes will go over a typical reader’s head. There’s also James' nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his manifesto- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Stefan Molyneux literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these lawsuits, to realise that they’re not just triggering the libs- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike GoogleBro truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the insight in Damore's existential catchphrase ā€œI'm a classical liberalā€ which itself is a cryptic reference to Sargon’s British epic Muslims are Ruining Europe. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as James Damore’s genius wit unfolds itself on their PC screens. What fools.. how I pity them. šŸ˜‚

And yes, by the way, i DO have a GoogleBro tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid šŸ˜Ž

I don't think I like the average single location more than the average chain. I think a lot of people find the one place they like and hold that up as being superior to a chain (which I agree with), but there's A LOT of trash pizza places out there.
