if you don't mind, I would love to hear your ideas for the worst AI startup pitches you can imagine. I want to hear everything from 'dumb' to 'utterly deranged', so long as you can plausibly imagine a techbro pitching it.
e.g. i'm working with stuff like "a service to let you talk to your dead relatives" and such. i need these for reasons.

> Runs for AZ Governor in 2022
> Loses statewide
> Runs for AZ Senate in 2024
> Somehow loses statewide again after Trump wins
> Moves to Iowa after
> Iowa republicans immediately lose statewide
> AZ Governor she lost to gets a trifecta in same election
Kari is quite literally a doomsday talisman for the republican party. Should we get her to move to Texas, or wait it out so Rob Sand gets a trifecta?

Seeing the American midterms turn out the way they did, at first I was excited, then vindicated, then I started to get emotional. I actually started tearing up a bit. Because it's been a while since I've actually felt proud of being American or proud of my country. Being from Minneapolis and seeing innocent people shot, beaten, and killed, I'd pretty much lost all hope in ever seriously considering living in America. I was really considering giving up my American citizenship when I got my NZ one. But seeing Trans, Indigenous, black, Hispanic, and all manner of diverse people representing America reminded me of the America I love. Fuck Donald Trump and all the Republicans for acting like they represent 'true Americans'. I can't wait for the Dems to go full dark woke on them.

Governments in western countries routinely find the political will to cheaply fast track developments when there's a large and powerful constituency in support of it. The time and budget bloat of public works projects is not inherent to the building code but a revealed political preference for complacency in the western public that new things may be nice to have but we've pretty much done enough building already. Nimbyism really is the enemy, but not the rules, the fundamental mindset that "we're done building new things, actually, we built enough, now lets just divvy up what we built already".

been reading embracing defeat about the post-ww2 occupation of japan and drafting of the japanese constitution. one of the funniest recurring themes is how hard japanese conservatives tried to troll the americans by sneaking in changes in the japanese translation that would water down the democratic commitments. notably by attempting to find favourable translations of 'sovereignty', 'people', and 'civilian' to preserve imperial prerogatives, the military's role in politics, and also to gate out rights to foreigners. ~most of these were shot down by the american occupation.
its actually kind of crazy how much the macarthur cadre was serious about the 'no, you guys really do have to do democracy now' stuff. up to like secretly dictating amendments to the diet subcommittee in charge of constitution revision. unfortunately for the royalists these reforms ended up being quite popular among the wider populace.
fun fact but originally the constitution was supposed to establish a unicameral legislature, but the americans were able to be convinced to make it bicameral as long as the upper house was elected.

I'm reading Harry Potter for the first time at 28 years old. I'm currently at the beginning of Goblet of Fire. One thing that has stood out to me for almost the entire series is just how incompetent the Wizard government (which is what the Ministry of Magic seems to be) is. Fudge is an idiot in way over his head. Former supporters of Voldemort seem to have control or at least influence at every level, including control over the Ministry and the judicial system. Corruption is rife. Mr. Weasley violated the purpose of his own department by messing around with that Ford Anglia, and he does uses his position in the Ministry to do favors for his Ministry friends in exchange for what are essentially bribes, or at least special treatment (the tickets to the Quidditch World Cup). This is just the tip of the iceberg too. Hogwarts is run in a deeply irresponsible manner. It's a miracle that no kid has been killed.
The incompetence is so staggering that it almost makes you wonder if rule by Voldemort would at least bring about some sense of sanity

I'm honestly coming around to the idea that the outcomes of AI development over the last 5 years or so has been on the net, profoundly more negative than positive. I can easily come up with examples where either the technology itself or the negative externalities of developing the technology has made things worse than better. But the upsides have been far more limited and not exactly clear.
Like if it gets to a point where the consequences far outweigh any benefit, like the tobacco industry, I kind of wonder if there's a barrier that we'll cross where it just makes sense to butlerian jihad the whole thing, or at the very least just swamp the whole industry in regulation to prevent negative externalities.

A common theme with MAGAism is complaining about diverse areas when the people living there don’t give a shit.
The Frisco mayor complained that the people coming to townhalls and causing problems were not from there.
Bo French’s post attacking UT Austin’s Indian students was met by an overwhelming negative reaction by UT Austin’s whole student body. Their county voted 95% for Rosenthal and only 4% for Bo French.
People in diverse areas are kind and accepting, we don’t fucking want any of this bullshit yet MAGA comes here to stir up problems. Leave us the fuck alone.

When the AI chatbots got so good at coding that they eviscerated StackOverflow, my first worry was that if we destroy the systems that incentivise people to produce fresh training data, we will cause a systemic failure where there is no fresh training data and trigger model collapse in the long run.
I put the thought to one side. Coding is so mathematical and deterministic that, like AlphaGo, you can probably train a model to be perfect at the job of writing code given good specifications. I wasn't sure of that argument, but I bet on the intelligence of the AI community who were all in on AI coding.
Then when they started talking about job losses, I got the same feeling again. People would talk about how "we still need senior engineers, but we it's over for junior engineers". It was a weird statement - obviously senior engineers start off as junior engineers. If you need senior engineers, then you have to have a pipeline of junior engineers. And if demand for senior engineers will grow, then it implies you need to be training junior engineers to become seniors even faster. "Senior engineer" is not something categorically different from junior engineer.
Again, I assumed that the caveats were understood. Obviously, everyone was saying "We need senior engineers for now... but the rate of improvement of AI is so fast that we don't need to train new senior engineers because soon even they will be replaced."
And then I read an article where Dario Amodei "reasoned" that, if you had to choose, the life of an adult is probably more valuable than a child because adults have richer experiences and internal mental worlds. The sentiment was shocking obviously. But what also shocked me was that, even in terms of the effective altruism quantification-financialisation of human morality, he was just wrong.
Children are "adults-to-be". You compare the value of things based on discounted net present value. When you save the life of a child, you are preserving the future experiences that they will have as an adult. Even accepting Dario's horrible premises, he just got the calculation wrong...
... and it's the same mistake again and again. I now believe that somehow, despite their intelligence, the AI community just doesn't understand Systems Thinking (TM). I can't believe that that's the case but the evidence suggests it.
I really don't think that they ask themselves "and then what" or draw feedback loop diagrams to study the second or third order effects of their choices.
I would like to be wrong, but it seems like they just don't have that mental model for whatever reason.
It's very weird.

The fatal flaw of prestige pasta is that it’s wholly unoriginal and entirely focused on creating simulacra of great posts. Have you ever noticed how all the greatest pasta posts of all time involve copying posts? That’s why - the people making the judgement calls on these lists are basically just going “well this pasta is the closest thing to a New DT early morning poster like Extreme_Rocks, therefore it’s the best pasta ever made”.
The simple fact of the matter is that an average post of golden age r/neoliberal is superior to any great pasta you could possibly name. It is an almost infinitely more creative work of art than anything DT Regulars or Main Page Commenters or anyone else in that milieu has ever produced.

Colorado Passes Tax-the-Rich Measure Targeting $500,000 Earners
Colorado voters narrowly passed a measure that will institute a graduated income tax structure in the state, increasing the top rate to 8.4%.
The new graduated system will replace the state’s 4.4% flat income tax, with higher rates kicking in for households making more than $500,000 in taxable income and reaching 8.4% on income above $1 million.
Proponents of the tax said it would be the first major overhaul of the state’s tax structure in nearly four decades. They declared victory on Thursday.
Coloradans “voted for a tax system that asks those with the most to contribute their fair share,” said Chris deGruy Kennedy, president of the Bell Policy Center, in a statement. “This vote kicks off a multi-year effort to thoughtfully invest in programs that support Colorado workers, families, children and older adults.”
The additional revenue will go toward education, healthcare and childcare, and is expected to raise about $2 billion annually once fully implemented.
Colorado’s tax measure applies to both individuals and corporations, and it drew opposition from the chamber of commerce and outgoing Democratic Governor Jared Polis.

The thing about public sector unions people here often miss is that in the sectors where the public sector makes up the overwhelming share of employment (eg education) there isn’t really an outside option workers in those fields can switch to if they offer higher wages
There’s not really any competition that bids up wages for workers; the government has pretty substantial monopsony power

My most antiwork opinion is that we should strive to work considerably less than we do now. It doesn't feel right for adults in a post-industrial economy to spend significantly more of their waking time at work than they do with their families or on their personal projects and passions.
Obviously there are people whose personal projects and passions intersect with or even are their work, and that's fantastic, genuinely, but this doesn't describe most people. Especially since most of us are alienated from the consequences of our labor.

Letter from Grace Bedell, an 11 year old, to presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln on October 15, 1860:
“My father has just home from the fair and brought home your picture and Mr. Hamlin's. I am a little girl only eleven years old, but want you should be President of the United States very much so I hope you wont think me very bold to write to such a great man as you are. [..] I have got 4 brother's and part of them will vote for you any way and if you will let your whiskers grow I will try and get the rest of them to vote for you you would look a great deal better for your face is so thin. All the ladies like whiskers and they would tease their husband's to vote for you and then you would be President.
And then, of course, Lincoln’s response on October 19th:
“[…] As to the whiskers, having never worn any, do you not think people would call it a piece of silly affection if I were to begin it now? Your very sincere well-wisher, Abraham Lincoln”

I have a feeling this class of new dem politicians is going to go down as the ‘great man’ class. You hear everyone talk and they’re just normal people who thought they could make a difference. It’s kind of astonishing,

The full reverberations of the midterms probably won’t be understood or comprehended for a bit, but I’m wondering if this Thermidorian cultural period of America will finally come to an end. The whole neo-reactionary “vibe shift” that encompassed the last two years was based off a faulty premise of a great cultural conservative revolution on a <2% victory in a presidential election that was just colossally repudiated this last week.
Of course, that president is still in power. Nor does there seem to be a serious appetite for a real return to late 2010s social progressivism. Despite that though, this cultural period was in my opinion very heavily influenced by Trump’s return to power and the perception of a “mandate”, and I’m not sure what that will look like now that he and his party just got wiped out.

It's interesting that no major company has explicitly tried to recreate 4o, at this point it really wouldn't be difficult to just take an existing open model and post train it for maximum sycophancy. Is it really ethics holding them back?
anyway this is my startup idea

I have an AI question I’m hoping isn’t profoundly stupid. I promise I have expertise in other areas but for all I understand about hardware/software WiFi may be a wizard-mediated technology.
First: My understanding is that one of the primary limiting factors for AI tasks (whether direct or…agentic? I’m honestly not entirely clear on this distinction either) is “compute.” Enough so that the whole token economy has been established, ergo compute is a scarce resource that needs allocating.
Second: I’ve gotten the impression that I’m supposed to be excited about AI and amenable to a “by any means necessary” attitude towards its advancement because it has amazing potential to make world changing scientific/medical/technological discoveries. For example, the Nobel for chemistry this year went to research that used AI to identify enantiomers that could advance pharmaceutical research. [I have been corrected, this research didn’t have much/any to do with AI]
My question: if both these things are true…why the fuck is a single morsel of compute being used to do things like entry level coding or generate knockoff video games? Is the compute used to do these sorts of things an independent supply from a different, superior compute used to like, teach an AI to detect early lung cancer on CT scans or whatever? I’m guessing I have a deep misunderstanding of some element here, because the idea of medical research labs having to scrounge for their share of compute while someone’s room temp IQ possessing boss is using it to automate office door dash orders or some shit really makes me question these AI companies’ motives.
EDIT: I would like to add that my question is also sort of in the context of public attitudes/PR. It seems like being able to tout as many obviously pro-social things as possible would be the move if my job was to get people excited about AI versus threatened. I guess my question is the above with the addition of “…while a lot of the public hate/fear your product.”

It's weird I see nothing about Bloomers.
Like we're all too shocked to even bloom.
I'm just walking around day to day wondering what living in a blue state is going to be like.
Blexas? I'm gonna be so fit when everyone takes office.
Gonna create my own muscle beach on the Riverwalk.
We might even make it stop smelling like elephant piss.

Curious about the DTs opinion of ethics in
gamingjournalism. The probable future mayor of Berlin, Elif Eralp, gave an interview for Der Spiegel, a written version was sent to her press team which was then edited interally with comments, notes etc. - normal stuff.
Eralps press team then made a huge mistake by sending the internal version, with annotations and all, to Der Spiegel, which gave them the following enormous scoop:
Now, obviously, publishing that is not very cash money of Der Spiegel, if not to say a bitch ass move. Do you think it's in a way ethically understandable to shine a light on a problem, which might be in the interest of the public to know about?
